Beatstar maker NextBeat has been acquired by Duolingo – Mobilegamer.biz

Language learning app Duolingo has acquired NextBeat, the London studio spun out of Space Ape back in January.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed.

The Beatstar maker will now lead Duolingo’s music learning courses. NextBeat’s team of 23 staff will now also be Duolingo’s first official presence in the UK.

Duolingo said as part of the announcement that millions of learners are already using Duolingo Music’s beta program. This acquisition “signals Duolingo’s ambition to make music education more engaging and accessible with a product that is both playful and effective,” the company said.

NextBeat CEO Simon Hade said of the deal: “From day one, it was clear that Duolingo and NextBeat share the same values: putting learners first, obsessing over great design, and never taking ourselves too seriously.”

“Joining forces means we can bring our passion for music and play to a platform that is redefining how people learn.”

From January: ‘NextBeat wants to make the new Guitar Hero’.

Duolingo chief business officer Bob Meese added: “Learning should be just as engaging as playing a great game, whether you’re practicing a new language or playing a favorite song.”

“This is a strategic bet on talent,” Meese continued. “The NextBeat team brings deep mobile gaming and music industry expertise, which will make our Music course and the entire Duolingo platform more delightful, immersive, and effective.”

NextBeat spun out of Space Ape in January, shortly after the London studio was acquired and effectively closed by Clash of Clans maker Supercell.
