Terumo to Buy U.K.-Based OrganOx for $1.5 Billion

By Kosaku Narioka

Terumo plans to acquire OrganOx, a U.K. maker of organ preservation devices, for $1.5 billion, marking its strategic entry into the organ-transplantation field.

The Japanese medical-equipment maker said Monday that it would acquire all shares of the U.K. company it didn't already own. It currently holds 0.5% voting right in OrganOx, founded in 2008 as a spinoff from the University of Oxford.

Terumo said it would buy OrganOx shares from London-based venture capital firm BGF and Paris-based investment company Lauxera Capital Partners.

"Donated organs are an extremely precious medical resource, and OrganOx's mission to deliver transplantable organs in optimal condition deeply resonates with our unwavering commitment to patients," Terumo Chief Executive Hikaru Samejima said.

The Japanese company said the acquisition was expected to be completed once it obtains necessary regulatory approvals and permits.
