ISLAMABAD, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Five terrorists and a passerby were killed and eight policemen injured in a joint operation by police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Pakistan’s northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the CTD said in a statement.

The intelligence-based operation was launched in Upper Dir District of the province on Sunday, and the heavy exchange of fire continued until the wee hours of Monday morning, the statement said.

The injured policemen were shifted to a nearby hospital, and their condition is stable, the statement added.

Police said the slain terrorists were linked to an earlier attack on police, which killed three policemen and injured six others.

Authorities recovered four bodies of the militants, while clearance operations were still underway in the area.
