Prime Video Pushes Back On Toxic ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Fandom

Amazon’s Prime Video is pushing back against the toxic environment surrounding The Summer I Turned Pretty.

With the third and final season currently releasing weekly episodes, the passionate fans of the Jenny Han series have been flooding social media with their hot takes on the story.

Viewers are split between Team Jeremih and Team Conrad, the two fictional brothers involved in a love triangle with their childhood friend, Belly.

Things have gotten so out of hand that Prime Video has had to issue, on numerous occasions, a series of “community guidelines” asking fans to stop cyberbullying the actors of the series.

“We have a ZERO tolerance policy for bullying and hate speech,” read the Instagram Stories post on the show’s official account.

The post warned social media users that they would get banned if they engaged in hate speech or bullying, targeting our cast or crew, and harassing or doxxing members of the community.

Another warning on X read, “Cousins is our safe place. Everything good, everything magical. Let’s keep the conversation kind this summer.”

Prime Video also participated in the Summer I Turned Pretty meme trend, updating the show’s title to read, “The summer we started acting normal online.”

Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, addressed the passionate fandom on social media and explained why he chooses not to engage with the toxicity.

“I don’t check Instagram anymore, so I really haven’t seen that much hate,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny. I think it’s important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story — and it’s also not me.”

He continued, “I don’t think there’s a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens. And I think that’s why Amazon did a good job of stepping in and being like, ‘Hey, no bullying.’ Though, not really going so well.”

Earlier this summer, Peacock had to issue its own warning to Love Island USA viewers as they took to social media to express their frustrations with the Islanders and the events unfolding in the Fiji villa.

The Summer I Turned Pretty drops new episodes on Prime Video every Wednesday, with the Season 3 series finale set to drop on September 17.
