Intelligent traffic management system enhances motorway safety in Austria

Austria, St. Ruprecht an der Raab, 28 August 2025 SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, successfully rolled out the intelligent Traffic Management and Information System (VMIS 2.0) in May at Austria’s ninth and latest traffic management centre, on behalf of ASFINAG. This marks the successful completion of the foundational development, implementation and nationwide integration of one of the world’s largest and most advanced traffic management systems, following a seven-year project timeline. The system provides the foundation for intelligent, highly automated traffic monitoring and control, playing a key role in enhancing safety and optimising traffic flow across Austria’s motorways – both in tunnels and on open roads.

As a member of an international consortium, evon, a company of SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria and a specialist in automated control systems, was awarded the contract by ASFINAG in 2018. As part of this consortium, evon developed the system’s intuitive graphical user interface based on its proprietary software platform, evon XAMControl. The new interface enables unified control and management of traffic technology infrastructure from all ASFINAG traffic management centres. Tunnel systems, emergency call systems, traffic signs, lighting controls and monitoring equipment can now be managed quickly and efficiently.

In total, the new VMIS integrates more than 33,000 connected traffic units and approximately six million interacting data points into one centralised system across a motorway network spanning more than 2,200 kilometres. This enables the system to calculate and display the most accurate guidance and information for any section of motorway within seconds. For example, it can issue immediate warnings in the event of an accident and instantly trigger a diversion route if necessary. “With VMIS 2.0, we’ve created a cutting-edge, networked control platform that makes road traffic safer and smarter through precise data analysis, real-time control and automation,” says Daniel Seewald, evon’s Head of Tunnel & Traffic Infrastructure from the Austria operational division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.

The 19-year contract covers development and implementation as well as the system’s operation, maintenance and ongoing enhancement. By integrating artificial intelligence and car-to-X communication, VMIS 2.0 also paves the way for future advancements such as autonomous driving and smart mobility solutions. “The successful implementation of this intelligent traffic management system is helping us make a vital contribution to the digital transformation of traffic control in Austria. What’s more, it will play a decisive role in creating a transport infrastructure that is ready to handle the challenges of the future,” says Andreas Christandl, General Manager of the Austria operational division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.
