Someone recreated Morrowind’s world within Elden Ring, and now I crave a remake

Summary

  • InfernoPlus is squishing all of Morrowind into Elden Ring, modernizing the classic world.
  • Mod keeps Morrowind’s soul while adding modern QoL fixes for today’s players.
  • Project’s ~half done; InfernoPlus asks for interest before dedicating much more time.

Recommending Morrowind in today’s day and age is a tough sell. While I am perfectly happy to play an RPG system where you can see an enemy, walk up to them so you’re touching toes with one another, swing your sword directly at their torso, and miss because an invisible dice roll told you that you missed, I can’t really see the people who were raised on Skyrim and Oblivion Remastered putting up with it. Which is totally legitimate; while Morrowind won over my heart, it’s still a product of its time and lacks the quality of life features that modern gaming brought to us.

Fortunately, there are mods for that. No, not Morrowind mods, albeit you can iron out some of the older game’s many wrinkles with a third-party tweak here and there. No, I’m talking about a work-in-progress Elden Ring mod that recreates the world of Morrowind into a modern-day RPG engine, which should make it far more palatable for today’s market.

Morrowind in Elden Ring is the perfect marriage of old and new

As spotted by GamesRadar, this amazing feat was performed by InfernoPlus. This is the first time I’ve met them, but GamesRadar is telling me that InfernoPlus also ported Halo maps into Dark Souls. So that should give you an idea of what to expect with this project.

This time around, InfernoPlus is squishing the entirety of Morrowind into Elden Ring. They originally tried to fit it into the Dark Souls engine, but it couldn’t handle how “dense” Morrowind is, which is surprising, given how the Elder Scrolls title came out in 2002. In fact this 23-year-old world also proved too tasking for Dark Souls 3, which could only just squeeze it in within the world loading mechanics.

So, how do we play this mod? Unfortunately, it’s not quite ready yet; in fact, InfernoPlus claims it’s about half done. However, they do, understandably, want to gauge interest in this mod before they dedicate a ton more time into a mod that nobody cares about. Well, if you clicked on this article, there’s a good chance that you, our dear reader, do care about something like this, so be sure to leave them a comment saying you want more of it. Because I certainly do.

If you’ve never heard of Morrowind before, it’s the third entry in the Elder Scrolls series, arriving just before Oblivion. If you’d like to know more, we crowned it as one of the best original Xbox games of all time and one of the classic PC games you can (and should) still play today.
