Super Smash Bros. for the N64 is a common request for Nintendo to add to its library of streaming classics. Reddit and Famiboards posters have discovered evidence hinting that the game may land on Nintendo Switch Online. The potential leak originates from a video revealing Nintendo Classics features that debuted on June 5th. While not conclusive, a background image in the video appears to match the 1999 Super Smash Bros. box art.
At 40 seconds into the clip, the lower right part of the screen displays a blurry combination of colors. At this point in the video, Nintendo is demonstrating the CRT filter now available on the Switch 2. When comparing the image in the video to the Super Smash Bros. cover, similarities are evident in the colors of the logos and characters, like Mario. Nevertheless, skeptical gamers also see a resemblance to other N64 games, including Banjo-Kazooie and Mischief Makers.
In the past, promotional videos have teased Nintendo Classics that never surfaced. Still, Nintendo has placed more emphasis on emulating retro titles on the Switch and the Switch 2.
Some gamers believe the company has avoided the N64 game to prevent cannibalizing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sales. However, it has been seven years since the game released for the original Switch. Series creator Masahiro Sakurai will likely develop another title, but his current focus is on Kirby Air Riders for the Switch 2.
The arrival of the GameCube controller for the Switch 2 excited competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee players. Unfortunately, despite the console becoming part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription, the game isn’t included. If the latest box art leak is correct, the first Super Smash Bros. may be the most likely candidate.
