Mark Rylance Joins Luca Guadagnino’s Next Film ‘Artificial’

Mark Rylance is set to join the ensemble of the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios AI pic Artificial, which Luca Guadagnino is directing. Rylance joins a cast that already includes Andrew Garfield, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman and Ike Barinholtz.

Official plot details are being kept under wraps, although the film is being described as a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence. While unconfirmed, sources say the film revolves around the period at OpenAI in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days. Details behind who Rylance will be playing are unknown at this time.

Simon Rich wrote the script and will produce alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, as well as Jennifer Fox.

Rylance reunites with director Luca Guadagnino, having previously starred in Guadagnino’s Bones And All. Having focused mainly on theatre work, Rylance shot to fame in film and TV most notably with his Oscar-winning performance as Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and the critically acclaimed Wolf Hall, directed by Peter Kosminsky. His portrayal of Thomas Cromwell garnered him a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor and an Emmy nomination. In his career, he has won an Oscar Award, three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, three BAFTAs, and a SAG Award.
