“I never thought I’d see the day this fight could happen — and I don’t think the public did either,” Tyson admitted in a statement from CSI/Fight Sports. “Boxing has entered an age where the unexpected keeps happening, and this is about as surprising as it gets.”
The bout will be Tyson’s first since coming out of retirement last November in a controversial loss to Jake Paul. For Mayweather, who spent the latter part of his career at welterweight, it adds to a long list of post-retirement exhibitions, his most recent being against John Gotti III last August.
Because exhibition matches are not considered official contests, no winner is typically declared, and the result does not appear on a fighter’s professional record.
“You already know that if I am going to do something, it’s going to be big and it’s going to be legendary,” said Mayweather.
“I’m the best in the business of boxing. This exhibition will give the fans what they want.”
