US Open 2025: 19-year-old Oda Tokito completes Career Golden Slam by claiming men’s wheelchair singles title

With a deafening forehand return winner, Oda Tokito wrote history at the 2025 US Open (24 August-7 September).

The Japanese tennis player sealed the men’s wheelchair singles trophy on Saturday (6 September), and with that the Career Golden Slam, by beating Gustavo Fernández 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(11).

19-year-old Oda has completed a historic career accolade in New York City, USA, winning all four Grand Slam trophies as well as the Paralympic gold medal at Paris 2024.

The teenager follows in the footsteps of his idol Kunieda Shingo, as he becomes the second man to complete the wheelchair men’s singles Career Golden Slam.

Barely 24 hours early, Oda and Fernández teamed up to win the men’s doubles title in a super tiebreak against Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid. They were now on opposing sides of the net, both chasing their maiden singles honour at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Taking a set apiece, a tantalising third set headed to another decisive tiebreak, which needed 24 points to be settled in Oda’s favour at 13-11. The Ichinomiya native is now a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, all before becoming an adult.

Oda made his debut at the Paralympic Games a year ago in Paris, where he took singles gold and doubles silver back home from Stade Roland-Garros.
