Punjab on High Alert as Flood Levels Persist Despite Monsoon Slowdown

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported a decline in the intensity of the ongoing monsoon season, noting that no significant rise in river flows is expected across Punjab in the coming days.

According to the PDMA Director General, the monsoon system in upper catchment areas has now ended, and the tenth spell of rains in Punjab has come to a close. Forecasts indicate that heavy rainfall is unlikely during the next week, though flood conditions persist in multiple rivers.

The Sutlej River remains under severe stress, with water levels at Ganda Singh Wala recorded at an exceptionally high 230,000 cusecs, while Sulemanki is reporting a high flood with 137,000 cusecs. On the Chenab, Marala is flowing at 62,000 cusecs, and low floods of 98,000 cusecs each have been recorded at Khanki and Qadirabad. At Trimmu, flows have reached 250,000 cusecs, whereas Panjnad is experiencing an extremely high flood of 475,000 cusecs.

Meanwhile, the Ravi River shows 26,000 cusecs at Jassar, 31,000 cusecs at Shahdara, and a medium flood at Balloki with 80,000 cusecs. At Sidhnai, water levels are categorised as high, reaching 121,000 cusecs.

The PDMA confirmed that all relevant departments remain on high alert under the directives of the Punjab Chief Minister. Continuous monitoring of river flows is underway, with resources being mobilised to safeguard lives and property.

Separately, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain announced that the government will launch a special farmers’ package to compensate flood-affected communities for crop and livestock losses. The initiative includes tax relief on electricity bills in disaster-hit areas, with the federal government covering electricity subsidies, while provincial governments will waive land revenue.
