MITHI/DADU: Several hundred straw-mud houses in the rural areas of Tharparkar and Dadu districts were swept away as widespread rains and flooding continue to batter most parts of Sindh on Tuesday.
The two districts have been receiving intermittent heavy, moderate and light spells of monsoon rains for the last six and four days, respectively. They and almost all other districts continued to receive light to moderate showers over the last 24 days, reports from the upper, central and lower Sindh suggested on Tuesday evening.
No fresh rain-related casualties were reported after the previous tally of seven deaths, reported on Monday.
According to official rainfall data of Tharparkar released on Tuesday evening, the district has received a total of 1,150mm rain from Sept 4 to 9.
Nagarparkar recorded the highest precipitation with 305mm, followed by Diplo with 261mm, Kaloi with 191mm, Mithi with 173mm, Islamkot with 158mm, Chachro with 42mm and Dahli with 20mm.
While the flooding caused by rains swept away many non-concrete structures like houses and shops, it swept away many of them in the affected rural areas and inflicted severe damage to main and link roads as well. Road communication between villages in Nagarparkar were submerged in deep water leaving communities stranded within their localities.
In Diplo, the taluka and town hospitals were also inundated, prompting their administrations to shift patients to safer health facility away from the area.
The rains have filled small dams in Nagarparkar to their capacity.
Moderate to light rain was reported from most areas of Umerkot district as well.
Upper areas of Sindh, including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Kandhkot-Kashmore and Shikarpur districts also received intermittent spells of rain during Monday night and late Tuesday evening. No major rain-related incident was received from any of these areas.
In southern Sindh, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Sujawal, Sanghar and Badin districts continued to received light rain whole the day. Moderate to light showers were also reported from Jamshoro, Nawabshah, Larkana and Dadu districts.
In Mirpurkhas, nine people, six of them members of one family, were injured in two separate incidents of roof collapse on Tuesday.
The six family members were injured when the roof of their house near Aaso Chowk, within the limits of the Satellite Town police station, caved in during rainfall. Neighbours rushed to their rescue and took them to the Mirpurkhas District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
In the other incident, three persons were injured when the roof of their house collapsed in the Soomra Para locality of Bhansingh Abad. They were taken to the Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital for treatment.
