India wrapped up their campaign at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool with four medals, including two golds, on Sunday.
Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Minakshi Hooda (48kg) were crowned world champions, while Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) secured a silver and Olympian Pooja Rani (80kg) settled for bronze.
On Saturday, the 24-year-old Jaismine stunned top seed and Olympic medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland in the women’s 57kg final, prevailing 4-1 by split decision.
Szeremeta, the Paris 2024 silver medallist, started aggressively with sharp counter-attacks, but Jaismine took charge from the second round, using her height to dictate the bout and clinch a 4-1 win.
“This feeling can’t be expressed, I’m so happy to be a world champion,” Jaismine told Olympics.com. “After my early exit at Paris 2024, I went away and improved my technique physically and mentally. This is the result of consistent work for a year.”
On her way to the final, the Indian southpaw notched up four straight 5-0 unanimous wins – against fellow Paris Olympian Omailyn Alcala of Venezuela in the semis, Khumoranobu Mamajonova of Uzbekistan in the quarters, Brazil’s two-time Olympian Jucielen Romeu and Ukraine’s Daria-Olha Hutarina in her opening bout.
On Sunday, 24-year-old Minakshi Hooda edged Kazakhstan’s Paris 2024 bronze medallist Nazym Kyzaibay 4-1 to clinch the title in the women’s 48kg.
Their triumphs made Jaismine and Minakshi the first Indian champions under the aegis of World Boxing – the new governing body for the sport.
Previously, the likes of Mary Kom, Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain and others have been crowned world champions in tournaments conducted by the old governing body.
In all, three Indian boxers made it to the final. Earlier, Nupur Sheoran lost her bout by a 3-2 split verdict against Agata Kaczmarska of Poland in the final of the 80+kg to settle for a silver medal.
Olympian Pooja Rani, meanwhile, returned with a bronze after going down 4-1 to Englishwoman Emily Asquith in the semi-finals of the women’s 80kg.
India had fielded 20 boxers at the World Boxing Championships, including Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen, both returning to the ring after Paris 2024.
Borgohain exited in the second round of the 75kg category, while Zareen lost in the 51kg quarter-finals to Türkiye’s two-time Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu.
