After 42.195km raced in stifling conditions, the 2025 World Athletics Championships men’s marathon was decided by the smallest of margins.
In a sensational finish inside the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo on Monday 15 September, Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu crossed the finish line just ahead of Germany’s Amanal Petros to win the world title in 2:09:48. Petros ended the race with the exact same time and, though he lay on the floor with the finishing tape wrapped around him, will need to content himself with an impressive silver medal.
Italy’s Iliass Aouani was the third man to pass the finish line, claiming an impressive bronze in a time of 2:09:53.
