Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is Qualcomm’s next flagship chipset

Qualcomm just confirmed the naming for its next-gen flagship chipset, and it won’t exactly follow in the footsteps of last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. The upcoming chip will be called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. But why skip four generations?

Well, it seems Qualcomm is reverting to its original Snapdragon 8 series naming scheme, which began in 2021 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. From then, we got the SD 8 Gen 2 in 2022, followed by the SD Gen 3 and last year’s SD 8 Elite, which would have been the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 would be the fifth chipset in the series and is, as Qualcomm puts it, “an evolution of its established framework” and not a complete change.

Qualcomm is set to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, which kicks off on September 23.

The SD Elite Gen 5 is expected to use custom Oryon CPU cores with a prime CPU core clocked at 4.6 GHz. The “for Galaxy” or Extreme Edition version will reach up to 4.7 GHz. Qualcomm’s upcoming chip is also expected to offer a new GPU that’s rumored to clock in at 1.2 GHz and offer a record-breaking AnTuTu score ranging between 4.2 million and 4.4 million. The chip itself will be fabbed on TSMC’s N3p 3nm process.

In related news, Xiaomi confirmed its 17 series, which consists of the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, will launch as the first phones powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
