Technical facility management: SPIE awarded further contract for German Historical Museum

Düsseldorf, Germany, 18 September 2025 – The Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA) has commissioned SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, to provide technical facility management services for the German Historical Museum in Berlin for another five years. SPIE’s range of services includes the operation and maintenance of all technical systems, from heating, ventilation, sanitation and air conditioning to firefighting and security technology as well as energy consulting. SPIE manages several buildings in Berlin, including the Pei building, the “Neue Wache” and the depot[1].

The museum’s buildings, some of which are historical, present significant challenges for technical facility management services: every exhibition requires stable climatic conditions, which are influenced not only by the weather and the seasons, but also by the number of visitors. SPIE ensures a consistent indoor climate across more than 23,000 square metres of exhibition space. Among other things, the multi-technical service provider maintains 130 niche air conditioning units and three cooling towers, each with a capacity of 300 kilowatts. This allows sensitive objects – from centuries-old manuscripts to large-format paintings or contemporary exhibits – to be presented and preserved under optimal conditions.

As partner for ESG[2] solutions, SPIE also advises on energy issues, develops resource-saving measures and implements them. A current example of this is the conversion from halogen lighting to energy-efficient LED technology.

As we have been responsible for the technical facility management of the German Historical Museum for many years, we have gained extensive knowledge of its specific requirements. This expertise enables us to operate complex systems optimally while implementing sustainable tailor-made solutions,” explains Michael Fenski, project team leader in the Efficient Facilities operational division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.

The German Historical Museum is one of the most important history museums in the world. We have been maintaining these exceptional buildings for over two decades and will now be applying our technical know-how for another five years to ensure that these cultural assets can be presented and preserved under optimal conditions,” says Stefan Schusterschitz, General Manager of the Efficient Facilities operational division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.
