Fairford homes given go-ahead after sewage concerns

Renewed plans to build a housing estate in a Cotswold town have been given the go-ahead following concerns over sewage capacity.

Cotswold District Council approved for Cala Homes Ltd to build 98 homes on land west of Hatherop Road in Fairford, Gloucestershire.

The proposals included an increase in the number of planned houses as initially on 87 were put forward for the site.

However, developers agreed that no more than 87 homes would be occupied until sewage upgrades were completed, or a development and infrastructure phasing plan was agreed.

The original plans changed to increase the number of one and three-bed houses, and adding four more affordable homes, with a reduction in the number of five-bed homes, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Fairford Town Council member Richard Harrison said: “It provides a much better housing mix… and also increases the number, making an even better contribution to the housing supply in the district.”

He said the key issue was the capacity of the Fairford sewage treatment system to accommodate the development “without increasing the incidence of pollution of the River Coln and areas downstream and sewage flooding to some residents”.

He added it was extremely reasonable for them to impose a condition preventing the go-ahead of any more than 87 houses without a sewage upgrade.

“Ideally, we would expect a binding commitment by Thames Water to the upgrade completion,” he added.

A letter in objection, read out at a meeting earlier in September, stated the writer firmly opposed to the development until Thames Water could adequately dispose of sewage.

An agent speaking for Cala Homes Ltd said Thames Water’s position was sensitive and they were “happy to accept the proposed conditions”.
