Adolescence is Climbing the Streaming Charts After Its Massive Emmy Wins

Netflix has a history of award-winning shows, including Wednesday and Stranger Things, which are the No. 1 and No. 3 most-watched shows in the history of the streamer. But, currently, the second-most popular Netflix show ever is back on the streaming charts, following its huge night at the recent Emmy Awards.

Adolescence, which stars Stephen Graham, who also co-created the series along with Jack Thorne, is, per FlixPatrol, back in Netflix’s top 10 TV shows in the world. The series is currently in the No. 5 spot in the streamer’s top 10. Black Rabbit, Wednesday, Billionaires’ Bunker, and Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, are in the No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 spots in Netflix’s top 10 TV shows globally.

According to Tudum by Netflix, Adolescence has 142.6 million views, to put it in second place, just behind Wednesday Season 1, which has 252.1 million views. At the Sept. 14 Primetime Emmy Awards, Adolescence took home one of the night’s biggest honors, winning the trophy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

Adolescence premiered on March 13 and quickly became one of the most popular Netflix shows ever. The limited series follows a family who must deal with the aftermath after their 13-year-old son, Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), is arrested for murdering his classmate. Graham, known for his work on Peaky Blinders, stars as Jamie’s dad, Eddie. The show served as a cautionary tale about how easily it can be for teenagers to be influenced. Sir Kier Starmer, the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, partnered with Netflix to have the series be mandatory viewing in secondary schools there.

The show has a 97% Rotten Tomatoes critic score and a 74% rating based on audience reviews and won a total of 8 Emmys at the 77th annual event. Graham took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, while Owen Cooper took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. At the age of 15, Cooper is the youngest actor to ever win an Emmy.

Actress Erin Doherty, who played Briony Ariston in the show, won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The series also took home the Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Emmy and won for Outstanding Casting as well as Outstanding Cinematography. Director Philip Barantini took home the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Adolescence was initially meant to run for just one season, as a limited series, but following the show’s success at the Emmys, co-creator Jack Thorne opened up about the chances of a second season. Earlier this year, Thorne shut down the idea of a Season 2, saying, “There’s gonna be no continuation. The Miller story, we think, is told.”

But, later on, Thorne admitted there’s “stuff you could still do with Jamie as a character.” That being said, he doesn’t think that any potential follow-up season would be told from the perspective of the murdered schoolgirl, Katie. “And people say it’d be brilliant to see Katie’s perspective. And you’re like, well, yes, but maybe we are not the right people to tell Katie’s story,” Thorne said.
