WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new message translation feature aimed at helping users communicate more seamlessly across language barriers.
The update allows users to translate incoming messages directly within chats, including 1:1 conversations, group messages, and Channel updates, without leaving the app.
With over 3 billion users in more than 180 countries, WhatsApp plays a central role in global communication. While the app supports numerous language localizations, actual message content has historically remained language-bound. This new translation feature directly targets that gap, aiming to improve user experience in multilingual regions or for those who communicate frequently across language lines.
The feature is being deployed gradually to both Android and iOS users, with support for a limited number of languages initially. Android users can access translations in English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users, however, are getting broader access with support for more than 19 languages at launch.
The translation functionality is straightforward. Users can long-press on a message and tap ‘Translate’ to see a localized version. A language preference can be set for the feature, and the chosen language is saved for future use. On Android, WhatsApp is also adding the ability to automatically translate entire conversation threads, translating all future incoming messages in real time, making it particularly useful for ongoing multilingual conversations.
One of the key aspects of this feature is its privacy-focused design. All translations are performed locally on the user’s device, meaning the translated content never leaves the device, and WhatsApp’s servers cannot access or view the translated messages. It’s also worth noting that no internet connection is required once the translation packs are downloaded, providing both convenience and security for users who want to translate messages on the go.
The rollout of the new translation feature will be gradual, with availability expanding to more users and additional languages over time. WhatsApp has not disclosed a specific timeline for full global coverage, but confirmed that more language support is planned.
This latest on-device translation feature positions WhatsApp more competitively against most messaging platforms that lack similar capabilities; however, for many, security and strong end-to-end encryption guarantees remain the absolute priority.
