Great Britain won their second straight women’s title while Italy clinched the men’s crown at the IFAF European Flag Football Championships 2025 in Paris on Saturday (27 September).
The Lionesses came out on top in an engrossing final, beating Austria 34-33 in overtime to retain the title they won two years ago.
The Austrians were on the cusp of winning their fourth continental title before Great Britain sent the match into the extra period, levelling the scores at 27-27 in regulation time.
The British side drew first blood thanks to a Marta Mathews overtime touchdown, with Grace Conway adding a point to go 34-27 up.
Austria responded with a Magdalena Helm touchdown and opted for a two-point conversion, which was ultimately slapped away by Mathews to give Great Britain the narrow win.
In the men’s final, Italy finally got their hands on the gold medal after finishing second on four previous occasions.
The Azzurri beat fellow perennial runners-up Austria 27-19 to deny them their first gold medal since the inaugural tournament in 2003.
Italy held a 21-6 half-time lead courtesy of three Vincent Papale touchdowns, while Jordan Bouah added more points with a scoring grab.
Austria’s Simon Knoll and Valentin Ehrenfried added to their side’s scoresheet, but it was not enough to catch up to the Italians.
