Techland’s Dying Light: The Beast has proven itself as a successful comeback to the series’ roots with the return of Kyle Crane to the new Eurasian locale of Castor Woods. The tense night cycles with hyper-aware volatiles have kept many on their toes; however, one infected variant has seriously frustrated players who love to traverse Castor Woods at breakneck speeds. And that frustration stems from the game’s biters.
Biters in Dying Light: The Beast can easily grab you regardless of your movement speed, progression level, or the difficulty of the area, chucking every player into an unskippable QTE section unless you have throwing knives equipped.
Techland did state that the infected are tougher to deal with this time around, but there was no forewarning about the unskippable biter QTEs. Amid community feedback, Techland has now confirmed to make adjustments to reel in these overzealous biters, as mentioned in a new developer update video released over the weekend.
Game Director Nathan Lemaire addressed fans and acknowledged the issue head-on, stating that Techland would maintain the game’s difficulty while introducing a dose of fairness. Lemaire stated:
Today, I would like to talk to you about our biters. As you are aware, their primary reflex is to grab you, and while we want to make sure that we maintain their aggressiveness, we also want to make sure that we ensure fairness in that mechanic.
We are going to deliver those fixes in one of our next hotfixes. We are currently playing with it in order to make sure that it maintains the quality we would like to deliver to you, and then we will keep monitoring your feedback. So thank you for playing, and see you in Castor Woods.
Techland will issue an upcoming hotfix, which is expected to be released soon after internal testing. The hotfix will introduce three core tweaks. First, survivors will gain an additional buffer period to break free from a biter’s grip before taking damage.
Second, biters who lunge at you with a QTE will telegraph their intent clearly via adjusted startup animations. Last but not least, alerted biters will be less likely to resort to a grab attack, reducing the likelihood of a QTE ambush while traversing Castor Woods.
