We’re apparently now in an era where people are so tired of waiting for their favorite franchises to return that they’re taking matters into their own hands. The Parasite Eve franchise from Square Enix made its debut in 1998, but we haven’t seen anything from it since Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday launched in 2010 on the PlayStation Portable. Despite hopes that we’d at least get a remaster of the original Parasite Eve one day, Square Enix has remained quiet, although protagonist Aya Brea did appear in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius in 2023.
If you’re among those who have given up hope for a series revival, you may want to take a look at Parasite Mutant. Announced during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2025, it’s an upcoming sci-fi RPG from developer IceSitruuna, the team behind Frontier Hunter: Erza’s Wheel of Fortune. Set to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2026, Parasite Mutant’s combat system centers on Active Time Chains (ATC), which combines the Active Time Battle (ATB) system from classic RPGs with a three-segment chain.
As for its art style, you can tell from the trailer that it will use a semi-realistic anime design along with modern rendering techniques. The team also announced it will add a retro filter and a CRT filter so players can get the full 1990s-to-2000s experience. Though details on the story are mostly being kept under wraps, players will take on plenty of mutants and solve various puzzles while searching for answers and uncovering the horrifying secret of this universe. As a Parasite Eve fan, I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one to see how it develops.
