The Erinys Quartet has won first prize at the 2025 Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition. The quartet receives €15,000 as well as several festival engagements.
The final round took place on 27 September at the Freemason Hall in Trondheim, Norway. The groups performed music by Schubert and Beethoven, in addition to the commissioned work A Pastoral Elegy by Ståle Kleiberg.
The €10,000 second prize was awarded to the Absalon String Quartet, who also won the Audience Prize. The Motus Quartet received three prizes: the €5,000 third prize, Commission Prize and Jury Prize.
The Erinys Quartet was founded in 2018 at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where it was mentored by Marko Ylönen. The members have roots in Estonia, Lithuania, Greece, the United States and Finland. The group is currently pursuing a diploma in chamber music at Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain, under the tutelage of Günter Pichler of the Alban Berg Quartet.
Since autumn 2023, the group has been the Nina von Maltzahn quartet-in-residence at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, US, as well as being supported by Le Dimore del Quartetto since 2021.
Other competition success includes the audience prize at the 2023 Bad Tölz International String Quartet Competition, as well as the Bronze Medal Prize at the 2024 Fischoff Competition.
The group’s 2025 season saw concerts across the US and Europe. This included debuts at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. It will also be giving concerts around the US as part of Curtis on Tour, collaborating with pianist Michelle Cann, violist Roberto Díaz, and cellist Peter Wiley.
The 2025 edition’s jury was chaired by Levon Chilingirian and comprised Asbjørn Nørgaard, Bjørg Lewis, Øyvor Volle, Minna Pensola, Radovan Vlatković and Tomas Djupsjöbacka.
