India have announced a five-member squad, led by Sahaja Yamalapalli and Ankita Raina, for the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 play-offs to be held in Bengaluru from November 14 to 16.
Drawn in Group G alongside Slovenia and seventh seeds Netherlands, India will host their round-robin ties at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium. It will be the first time that India will host the Billie Jean King Cup play-offs.
Yamalapalli, ranked 347, will be India’s highest-placed singles player on form, followed by Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (374), Raina (447) and Riya Bhatia (499).
Doubles specialist Prarthana Thombare completes the line-up, with Vaidehi Chaudhari named reserve.
Vishal Uppal will be the captain of the side while Radhika Kanitkar will be the coach. Zeel Desai and Shruti Ahlawat will also join the training camp ahead of India’s matches.
The three teams will face each other in round-robin matches, after which the group winners will advance to the 2026 Qualifiers.
The remaining two teams will drop back into their respective 2026 Regional Group I events for next season.
This will be only the second time that India will feature in the Billie Jean King Cup play-offs. The Ankita Raina-led Indian tennis team sealed its berth after bagging second place at the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group 1 in April.
India previously reached the play-offs in 2021, when they lost 3-1 away to Latvia.
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is one of the most prestigious international tennis events for women.
It brings together top-ranked players from different countries to compete in a team format. The tournament is the women’s equivalent of the men’s-only Davis Cup.
