DC Studios’ Superman since premiering on HBO Max on Sept. 19 has racked up 13 million global viewers.
HBO Max reports that the film had the largest 10-day audience for a pay-1 film since December 2023 when Barbie played.
During the James Gunn film’s premiere week on HBO Max, other Superman titles saw a corresponding spike in global viewership, this is for the period measured between Sept. 15-21 and Sept. 8-14. Those titles include Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story +670%, Superman: The Movie +155%, Superman Returns +120% and Man of Steel +40%.
Gunn’s Superman landed on HBO Max after a 70-day theatrical window. The David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Rachel Brosnahan movie had a 35-day theatrical window to PVOD as Gunn wanted the movie made available in homes in time for the premiere of season 2 of Peacemaker on HBO Max. Last weekend’s sixth episode of season 2 of Peacemaker served as a bridge to the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which Gunn will shoot next spring in time for a July 9, 2027 release date.
Superman opened to $125M domestic, $220M global. The film ended its theatrical run at $354.1M stateside, $615.6M worldwide.
Gunn recently told Howard Stern that Superman: Man of Tomorrow is “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.”
He added, “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”
The final episode of Peacemaker season 2 is on Oct. 9.
