Elsewhere, Nelly Chepchirchir continued her impressive run of victories this season, falling short of the world record, but clocking a personal best time of 2:29.77 to win the seldom held women’s 1000m.

Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali also embraced the speedy side of distance running, holding off Japan’s Miura Ryuji to claim victory in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:03.18.

However, it was the man in second who really turned heads on Friday (11 July) evening, clocking 8:03.43 to set a new national record for Japan in the men’s 300m steeplechase.

In fact, it was a good day for athletes from East Asia, with the Republic of Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok equalling the world lead of 2.34m to win the men’s high jump ahead of Czechia’s Jan Stefela (2.32m).

There was also plenty of action in the women’s shot put, where the Netherlands’ Jessica Schilder launched a mighty throw of 20.39m to best Team USA’s Chase Jackson (20.06m) and Canada’s Sarah Mitton (20.00m).

In the men’s triple jump, Jamaica’s Jordan Scott reigned supreme, jumping a personal best of 17.52m to leapfrog Algeria’s Yasser Mohammed Triki (17.23m) in the final standings.

A double serving of high hurdles racing saw Team USA’s Trey Cunningham win the men’s 100m hurdles in a time of 13.09 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Tapper equalled her personal best to snag top honours in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.34 seconds.

Other victors on the night included Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in the men’s 5000m and the Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino in the women’s 400m.
