SEBI confirms Jane Street deposited ₹4,843 crore, says certain requests ‘under examination’

Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has confirmed that global proprietary trading firm Jane Street has deposited ₹4,843 crore in an escrow account, as directed by them in an interim order on July 3.

“They have further stated that this action has been undertaken by them without prejudice to their rights and remedies, which remain available to them in law and equity,” the regulator said in a statement on its website.Additionally, Jane Street has further requested SEBI that certain conditional restrictions imposed under the interim order be listed and that SEBI issue appropriate directions in that regard.

American jet maker Boeing and the United States Federal Aviation Agency (USFAA) recently notified that the fuel switch locks used in flight are safe, as per a report from Reuters. This comes at a time when the fuel switch lock mechanics have come under scrutiny amid the ongoing investigation into the Air India AI 171 crash.

The investigation into the Air India AI 171 crash by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released its preliminary report on July 12.

According to the Reuters Report, while the FAA admitted that the fuel switch lock system used in many jets, including the Boeing models, is similar, they are not “unsafe”.On the back of this reported notification, jet maker Boeing also refrained from issuing any directive on the system.This preliminary report into the disaster has focused on the simultaneous fuel cutoff, which meant that both engines’ fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF, all within the span of one second of each other.


Paytm’s retail shareholding declines for the fifth straight quarter even as MFs continue to buy

Shares of One97 Communications, parent company of payments aggregator Paytm, were sold by retail investors during the April-June period, shareholding data on the Bombay Stock Exchange for the most recent quarter discloses.

At the end of the June quarter, Paytm has 8.93 lakh small shareholders, or those with authorised share capital of up to ₹2 lakh. This figure is lower than the 9.45 lakh shareholders that the company had at the end of the March quarter.In percentage terms, retail shareholding in Paytm fell to 9.73% from 10.41% at the end of the March quarter. This is the fifth straight quarter of retail shareholding declining in Paytm. In March 2024, Paytm had a total of 12.05 lakh retail shareholders.


Gold hits three-week high globally, domestic prices hover near ₹1 lakh per 10 grams

Gold prices climbed to their highest level in three weeks on Monday (July 14), as renewed trade tensions boosted safe-haven buying. Spot gold was up 0.2% at $3,361.19 per ounce in early trade, after touching its strongest since June 23.

US gold futures rose 0.4% to $3,376 an ounce.In India, gold traded at ₹99,880 per 10 grams for 24 karat purity, ₹91,550 for 22 karat, and ₹74,910 for 18 karat gold, according to Goodreturns data.Fresh concerns over global trade pushed investors back to gold. Over the weekend, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico starting August 1. The threat disrupted markets already on edge from stalled negotiations.


Silver prices hit ₹1.15 lakh per kg for first time in India

Silver prices in India touched all-time high on Monday (July 14). The metal surged to ₹115 per gram and ₹1.15 lakh per kilogram — the highest ever seen in the domestic market, according to Goodreturns data.

Globally, spot silver rose 0.6% to $38.59 an ounce.Analysts point to strong industrial demand and tight supply. “Silver outshined most commodities last week, marking an all-time high on the domestic front and hovering near $40 on COMEX,” said Manav Modi, Senior Analyst, Commodity Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.Silver prices often follow gold’s trend. But this time, the white metal has outperformed gold. In June, silver gained more momentum due to robust industrial use and underinvestment in mining.
