Mardan teen’s organs give new life to 5, CM honours family

PESHAWAR – (Web Desk) – In a moving gesture of compassion and humanity, the family of 14-year-old Jawad Khan from Rustam village in Mardan chose to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC).

Jawad had sustained severe head injuries in a road accident and, despite the best medical efforts, could not be revived.

Following the formal declaration of brain death—made in line with national medical and legal protocols—Jawad’s grieving family made the courageous decision to donate his liver, both kidneys, and corneas. These organs were successfully transplanted into five patients, saving and transforming lives across the region.

Recognising this remarkable act of altruism, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Ali Amin Gandapur has announced that a road and a local hospital will be named in Jawad’s honour, ensuring that his legacy endures in the community he came from.

A special ceremony was held at the Chief Minister’s House, where the family was publicly honoured.

In a powerful tribute, the chairperson’s seat was respectfully given to Jawad’s father, symbolizing the family’s central role in this historic act of selflessness.

CM Gandapur hailed the decision as a “shining example of humanity”, praising the family for their strength, compassion, and the lives they chose to save even amid their profound grief.

The organ retrieval, conducted on the early morning of June 6, 2025, was performed under full ethical and procedural oversight. Medical authorities, including the Medical Transplant Regulatory Authority (MTRA), coordinated swiftly to ensure timely transplantation.

The operation was facilitated by a dedicated team of neurosurgeons, critical care specialists, and transplant professionals at HMC.

Following the retrieval, Jawad’s body was returned to his village for burial. But his story has traveled far beyond — igniting conversations about organ donation, inspiring policy action, and offering hope where there was once only loss.

Jawad’s name will now live on—not only in the patients he saved—but on the map of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as a symbol of courage, compassion, and the power of donation.
