Olympic medallist Siobhan Haughey out of World Championships with back injury

Four-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China announced Monday (21 July) she will not line up at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

“I have pulled out of the World Championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury,” Haughey wrote in a post on social media. “I’m sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now, I have to do what’s best for me.”

Haughey won Hong Kong, China’s first Olympic medal in swimming at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 when she took silver in the 200m freestyle. When she claimed a second silver days later in the 100m free, she was the first from her nation to take two medals at the Games in any sport.

At Paris 2024, Haughey added two more medals to her haul: a pair of bronzes in the 100m and 200m freestyles.

“As elite athletes, we’re trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently,” she said. “Luckily, I have an incredible team supporting me.

“I can’t wait to be back racing at the world stage again.”
