DETROIT – Katy Perry roared into Detroit for her first Michigan concert in nearly eight years, and delivered plenty of fireworks.
Perry brought her “The Lifetimes Tour” to Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit on Sunday, August 3. She last performed there in December 2017.
The stage setup was very fan-friendly. Shaped like a figure eight, it stretched nearly the full length of the arena floor, filled with fans inside and outside of it.
Perry utilized every square inch of the stage the whole night, either on it, or above it, as she hovered or flew above the crowd five times. No fans had a bad seat.
“What’s up Detroit! We’re back in the U.S.A.,” she exclaimed, after touring through Canada the last couple weeks. “It has been, like, eight years since I’ve been on tour. I had a child and there were other things out of my control and I just wanted to get it right.”
The show took place in six different parts, taking place in a fictional future where the fate of the world seemed to be in Perry’s hands as she needed to free the butterflies.
Each section of the show featured Perry in different outfits and costumes, along with various visuals.
Perry was also accompanied by a band and 10 backup dancers performing plenty of choreographed moves and stunts.
A broken up video board behind the stage also provided some colorful visuals, reminiscent of 1990s MTV days.
And, yes, Perry did ride atop the butterfly flawlessly during “Roar.” The same butterfly which malfunctioned a couple weeks ago in San Francisco, tilting and dipping, nearly sending her to the floor below.
A touching moment of the night ended up becoming a scary scene as Perry invited a few young fans from the crowd to join her on stage for a song.
One young girl was so overwhelmed, she passed out on stage and had to be take off via a stretcher by EMTs.
Later, while flying through the crowd singing “Roar,” Perry pointed to where the young girl was originally seated and said that she was doing great. A reassuring medical update mid-song.
Perry performed some new songs and nearly all of her hits with: “Chained to the Rhythm,” “Dark Horse,” “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Hot n Cold,” “Last Friday Night,” “I Kissed a Girl,” “Wide Awake,” “The One that Got Away,” “E.T.,” “Part of Me,” and “Roar.”
Perry performed for more than two hours with plenty of visuals, aerials, strong vocals and solid pacing. Everything fans came to see.
