The latest Man Utd transfer news and opinion as work continues behind-the-scenes on a deal for Benjamin Sesko.
Manchester United are moving ever closer to completing the signing of Benjamin Sesko.
United have confidence they can agree a deal to sign Sesko from RB Leipzig, as reported by The Manchester Evening News on Wednesday. Should a move be completed, United would have fended off competition from Newcastle for the striker’s signature.
A €75mi (£65.3m) bid plus €10m (£8.7m) in add-ons has been made by United – with Newcastle also submitting an offer. However, the player’s preference to move to Old Trafford is appearing to being decisive in where he will end up this summer.
If Sesko were to be signed by United, it would be with the expectation of him being their first-choice striker under head coach Ruben Amorim next term. It would also create speculation around Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund’s future at the club.
Sesko would be expected to start as a centre forward – but fellow summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo would also be expected to be among the first names on the team sheet next term.
A front-three consisting of new-boys Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo would, certainly, be a daunting prospect for the rest of the Premier League. Whether Amorim plans to have all three players in the starting line-up remains to be seen, but if so then Mbeumo and Cunha could allow Sesko to have more space to run in behind opposing defences and cause problems for defenders.
Sesko’s arrival could also be a major boost to a current member of the United squad.
Bruno Fernandes has arguably been United’s most creative player for some time now – and could go on to form an important partnership with Sesko this season. Only time will tell if Sesko’s signing will be a success for United but, if it is, it would likely mean Fernandes’ already impressive assist numbers increase even more.
There is still work to do to bring Sesko to United, but if a swoop does get agreed then the signing of the Slovenia international could go on to help several players in Amorim’s squad – including Fernandes.
