prices hit record highs around the globe

Gold prices in Pakistan rose further on Friday after spot gold went up by $12 to $3,552 per ounce in the international bullion market following the greenback slightly losing value.

The price of 24-karat gold per tola jumped by Rs1,200 to Rs377,900, while 10 grams of gold increased by Rs1,029, hitting Rs323,988 — both all-time highs.

Dealers reported that buyers are increasingly hesitant to make large purchases at these elevated levels. Traders noted that while global momentum drove domestic rates higher, physical demand remained cautious at these high prices.

Traders in the international market wait for the US non-farm payrolls report, which could influence Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.

Recent increase in the price of yellow metal shows three per cent upward trend for the week after hitting a record high on Wednesday.

Analysts said, expectations of a September Fed rate cut and a weaker dollar have strengthened gold’s appeal as a safe-haven asset amid global economic uncertainty.

Meanwhile, silver also headed for its third straight week of gains, reflecting broader strength in precious metals markets.

Samsara’s second-quarter adjusted earnings per share and revenue exceeded analysts’ expectations

    • Samsara beat profit and sales forecasts as the “internet of things” platform firm benefited from big customers.

    • The company’s customers with annual recurring revenue of more than $100,000 jumped 31% year-over-year.

    • Samsara raised its full-year earnings and revenue guidance.

Shares of Samsara (IOT) surged more than 15% Friday, a day after the “internet of things” platform company reported better-than-expected results and boosted its guidance as its base of big customers grew.

Samsara, which provides technology for businesses to track and manage vehicles, equipment, and operations in real time, posted fiscal 2026 second-quarter adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.12, with revenue jumping 30% year-over-year to $391.5 million. Both exceeded Visible Alpha forecasts.

Annual recurring revenue (ARR) at the end of the quarter increased 30% to $1.64 billion. The number of customers with ARR of more than $100,000 grew 31% to 2,771, and those accounted for about $1 billion of Samsara’s ARR.

“We’re seeing firsthand how the rise of the AI-driven economy is amplifying demand for our platform,” CEO and co-founder Sanjit Biswas said.

The company now sees full-year adjusted EPS of $0.45 to $0.47, up from its previous outlook of $0.39 to $0.41. It anticipates revenue in the range of $1.574 billion to $1.578 billion, compared to the earlier estimate of $1.547 billion to $1.555 billion.

Even with today’s advance, Samsara shares are down about 5% year-to-date.

  • Tesla proposes $1tn award for Elon Musk if he hits ambitious targets

Tesla proposes $1tn award for Elon Musk if he hits ambitious targets

Tesla boss Elon Musk will receive a pay package worth over $1tn (£740bn) if he hits a list of ambitious targets over the next decade, the board of the electric car firm has proposed.

To get the package, Musk, who is already the world’s richest person, would need to boost Tesla’s value eightfold, sell a million artificial intelligence robots, sell another 12 million Tesla cars, and hit several other moonshot goals.

Musk would not earn a salary or bonus but would instead be gradually awarded shares which would be worth $1tn if he achieves all the targets.

The company’s board urged investors to vote in favour of the package.

“Growth that may seem impossible today can be unlocked with new ideas, better technology and greater innovation,” Tesla chair Robyn Denholm said.

“Simply put, retaining and incentivising Elon is fundamental to Tesla achieving these goals and becoming the most valuable company in history.”

She added that the share award would “drive peak performance from our visionary leader”.

It comes after Musk was awarded $29bn in shares last month after his original $50bn award was struck down by a US court for being “unfair to shareholders”.

Under the latest plan, Musk would be awarded shares in 12 tranches, tied to 12 market milestones. The first milestone is for Tesla’s market value to double to $2tn.

The final market value milestone is $8.5tn – more than double the value of chip giant Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company.

He must also hit an operational milestone alongside each market milestone, which include the robot and vehicle targets, and a goal to increase one of Tesla’s earnings figures 24-fold.

According to Tesla’s latest financial report, sales are falling at their fastest rate in a decade, an issue which some experts have put down to Musk’s “toxic” reputation.

Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, said the suggested pay award “beggars belief”.

“Is one person worth that much?” he asked.

Mr Coatsworth added that Musk “presides over a company that has lost its edge, is being overtaken by rivals, and whose brand has been tarnished by Musk’s actions outside of Tesla.”

He continued: “Surely Musk should be fighting for his job, not Tesla’s board fighting to keep him?”

The board’s unprecedented pay proposal comes just months after it was forced to deny reports that it was looking to replace Musk.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal in May, which Tesla said was “absolutely false”, the board hired headhunters to replace Musk because he was too focused on his work with US President Donald Trump to tackle Tesla’s sinking share price.

The Wall Street Journal told the BBC at the time it stood by its reporting.

Mr Coatsworth said: “One minute Tesla’s board is wondering if Elon Musk is a liability to the company given his outspoken views and political distractions, the next they’re effectively saying ‘pick a number, any number’ to lock him in for as long as possible.”

  • Fazlur Rehman calls off Mardan, Dir rallies over flood situation

Fazlur Rehman calls off Mardan, Dir rallies over flood situation

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has cancelled his planned political rallies in Mardan and Dir, citing the worsening flood situation across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Speaking to media in Dera Ismail Khan, Fazl voiced concern over what he termed a deepening governance crisis in the province. “Those expected to pull the region out of crises are themselves trapped in them,” he remarked.

He said the rallies were meant to raise awareness about the critical situation, but had to be called off due to flooding. However, he confirmed that the Mufti Mehmood Conference will be held in Dera Ismail Khan on October 16.

The JUI-F chief assured that his party would stand by the people during difficult times. “We don’t seek confrontation, but the public deserves to know the truth. There is no sign of governance in KP — lawlessness and corruption are at their peak,” he said.

Fazl also held the state responsible for the deteriorating security in Swat and Bajaur, saying peace was the state’s duty. He warned that militants had become so strong they were directly challenging state institutions.

“People are being forced to migrate from Swat, Waziristan, and Bajaur. Although institutions are making efforts, they are not enough,” he added, reaffirming JUI-F’s commitment to upholding Islam and addressing public issues.

  • Study Finds Personalized Risk Messages Had No Effect in Raising Colorectal Cancer Screening Participation

Study Finds Personalized Risk Messages Had No Effect in Raising Colorectal Cancer Screening Participation

A randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of providing personalized risk information to patients and their providers about the patient’s risk for advanced colorectal neoplasia has found no difference in screening uptake with either the personalized risk messages or provider notifications. However, the personalized risk messages did increase uptake of stool testing in one health-care system. The study by Schwartz et al was published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

    Study Methodology

The researchers analyzed data from 214 providers and 1,084 patients at average risk for colorectal cancer across 41 primary care clinics in two health-care systems in the Midwest between November 2020 and May 2023. Eligible patients were aged 50 to 75 years who were scheduled to see a provider within a month and were due for a colorectal cancer screening.

Study participants were randomly assigned to view a colorectal screening decision aid with or without a personalized message (personalized decision aid or generic decision aid, respectively) about their advanced colorectal neoplasia risk. Providers were randomly assigned to receive notifications that their patient was due for screening, with or without a personalized message about the patient’s advanced colorectal neoplasia risk (personalized notification or generic notification, respectively).

The primary outcome was completion of any screening test within 6 months of enrollment. Secondary outcomes were completion of each specific screening test—including colonoscopy, stool test, and other approved screening tests—within 6 months. Logistic regression was used to estimate intervention effects.

    Results

The researchers found that overall, there were no differences in screening uptake or test completion for the provider notification (predicted probabilities = 41.5% vs 36.4% for personalized vs generic; difference = 5.1 [95% confidence interval (CI) = –1.6 to 11.8] percentage points) or decision aid (predicted probabilities = 36.8% vs 41.0% for personalized vs generic; difference = –4.1 [95% CI = –10.2 to 1.9] percentage points) interventions.

Health system was an effect moderator for stool testing. For one health-care system, the stool testing rate was higher for personalized vs generic provider notification (predicted probabilities = 21.1% vs 7.9%; difference = 13.2 [95% CI = 1.6–24.8] percentage points) when the decision aid was generic.

The stool testing rate was higher for the personalized vs the generic decision aid (predicted probabilities = 21.4% vs 7.9%; difference = 13.5 [95% CI = 2.4–24.5] percentage points) when the provider notification was generic.

“Although including personalized risk for ACN [advanced colorectal neoplasia] in a decision aid or provider notification had no overall effect, it increased uptake of stool testing in one health system. …These findings require confirmation and extension in subsequent studies with potential to improve the uptake, effectiveness, and efficiency of colorectal cancer screening,” concluded the study authors.
