Disturbing Eyesight Problem Affects 70% of Astronauts on Long Missions : ScienceAlert

When astronauts return from the International Space Station, many have noticed an unexpected side effect of their mission, their eyesight has changed.

This phenomenon, affecting about 70% of astronauts on long duration missions, has NASA scientists working to understand why weightlessness affects how we see.

Dr. Sarah Johnson noticed it first during her six month stay aboard the ISS. She reported that text that was crystal clear before launch became blurry.

Johnson isn’t alone though, astronauts frequently report difficulty reading, blurred distance vision, and other visual changes that can persist for years after returning to Earth.

Related: Astronauts Reveal The Shocking Beauty of Lightning From Space

The condition is now known as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome or SANS for short, and it’s become one of the most pressing health concerns for long-duration space missions. Unlike motion sickness or muscle weakness which resolve quickly back on Earth, the vision changes can be permanent.

The culprit appears to be microgravity itself. On Earth, gravity constantly pulls fluids downward through our bodies. In space, these fluids redistribute, causing facial puffiness and increased pressure inside the skull.

NASA astronaut Suni Williams wears a cuff on her left leg as she conducts an eye exam. (NASA)

This elevated pressure can flatten the back of the eyeball and cause swelling of the optic nerve. These findings have major implications for Mars missions, which could last 2-3 years.

“We need to understand whether these changes stabilise or continue worsening over time. An astronaut with severely compromised vision could jeopardise an entire Mars mission.” – Dr. Michael Roberts, NASA’s vision research lead.

Roberts and his team at NASA are developing several countermeasures, including special contact lenses, medications to reduce fluid pressure, and exercise protocols that might help maintain normal circulation.

They’re also testing a device called the Visual Impairment Intracranial Pressure (VIIP) chamber that could simulate Earth-like pressure conditions for the eyes.

While concerning, this research benefits everyone on Earth too. Scientists are gaining new insights into how pressure affects vision, potentially helping treat conditions like glaucoma and intracranial hypertension.

Understanding how our bodies adapt to space remains crucial. As we test the limits of our bodies more and more through longer duration space flight, alas we uncover more and more challenges.

The research into solutions will continue at NASA and on board the ISS so that hopefully, when we finally do reach out on a human trip to Mars, we can at least see clearly what we have accomplished!

  • cyber risk management still lacks business context – Intelligent CIO Middle East

Despite increasing investment in cybersecurity, a new 2025 Qualys report reveals that most organisations still struggle to link cyber risk to real business impact—leaving boardrooms with a blind spot in decision-making.

According to the State of Cyber Risk Assessment 2025 report by Qualys in partnership with Dark Reading, while nearly half of organisations now have a formal risk management programme, a staggering number still lack the ability to translate technical vulnerabilities into meaningful business decisions.

“Spending has increased, frameworks have matured, and boards are asking tougher questions,” said Mayuresh Ektare, Vice President of Product Management at Qualys. “Yet 71% of organisations report that their cyber risk levels are either rising or remaining the same. That should be a wake-up call.”

Only 6% of those surveyed said their risk levels have decreased.

    The business context black hole

The report reveals a persistent disconnect between cybersecurity operations and business outcomes. While 49% of respondents reported having formal risk programmes, only 30% link them directly to business objectives. Even fewer (18%) use integrated risk scenarios that consider both business processes and financial exposure.

“Every business is unique; hence, each risk management programme must be tailored to reflect that reality,” Ektare noted. “The old one-size-fits-all, CVSS-driven approach doesn’t work anymore.”

Adding to the concern is how cyber risks are being communicated at the executive level. While 90% of organisations report cyber findings to the board, just 14% quantify those risks financially, and only 22% involve finance teams in discussions. The gap between technical risk and strategic consequence remains stark.

Asset visibility: the old problem that won’t go away

Two decades on, organisations are still struggling with asset visibility, a foundational challenge that continues to undermine security efforts. Although 83% of organisations perform regular asset inventories, only 13% can do so on a continuous basis. Nearly half still rely on manual processes, and 41% admit that incomplete asset data is one of their most significant barriers to effective risk management.

The report suggests that true cyber resilience begins with knowing what’s at risk. But without visibility, organisations are essentially securing blindfolded.

Risk prioritisation needs a new vocabulary

The industry also appears to be slowly moving beyond CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) as the primary metric for prioritisation. Around 68% of organisations now blend severity scores with threat intelligence and loss forecasting to drive risk decisions. Still, nearly one in five (19%) rely solely on traditional scoring methods, missing out on the bigger picture.

“Patching everything is neither possible nor necessary,” said Ektare. “What matters is which risks affect your crown jewel assets. If everything is critical, then nothing is.”

The rise of the risk operations centre (ROC)

To address this challenge, Qualys is advocating a shift toward a “Risk Operations Center” (ROC) model – a framework that merges vulnerability data, threat intelligence, and business asset context under one roof. Unlike reactive SOC models that respond to incidents, the ROC aims to predict and prevent them by aligning cybersecurity strategy with business impact.

“ROC is the next evolution,” Ektare said. “It provides a continuous, business-aligned view of cyber risk. And that’s what stakeholders are demanding.”

The report’s key message is clear: current cybersecurity efforts, though well-intentioned, often fall short where it matters most, business value. Risk data needs to be translated into stories that resonate with CFOs, CEOs, and boards. Otherwise, cyber will remain a technical silo, detached from enterprise priorities.

For organisations looking to improve, the recommendations are simple but urgent:

    • Define crown jewel assets and tailor risk programmes to protect them.
    • Replace fragmented telemetry with enterprise-wide risk signals.
    • Prioritise risk in business—not just technical—terms.
    • Quantify risk in financial language for the board.
    • Shift from reactive SOCs to proactive ROCs.

“The illusion is that cyber risk is being managed just because tools and dashboards exist,” Ektare concluded. “But real risk reduction only happens when the business is part of the conversation.”

  • Two brothers marry one bride in India

Two brothers marry one bride in India

In a rare and culturally rich ceremony, two brothers from Indian state of Himachal Pradesh’s Hatti tribe married the same woman — a revival of the ancient and now-fading tradition of polyandry.
The unique marriage took place in Shillai village, located in the Trans-Giri region of Sirmaur district, with hundreds in attendance.

The three-day celebration, which began on July 12, saw Sunita Chauhan tie the knot with Pradeep and Kapil Negi — a union steeped in age-old customs, reported Indian media outlets.

Local folk songs, traditional dances, and sacred rituals added vibrancy to the event, now circulating widely on social media through viral videos.

The bride and both grooms emphasised that the decision was mutual and without pressure. “I knew about this tradition and chose it willingly,” said Sunita, who hails from Kunhat village. “I respect the bond we’ve formed,” she added.
Her husband Pradeep, a government employee, said, “We’re proud to follow our tradition openly.”
Kapil, who works abroad, added, “Though I live away, this marriage ensures stability, support, and love for our wife — as a united family.”

Known locally as “Jodidara”, this form of polyandry is still recognised under Himachal Pradesh’s revenue laws. Though rare today, the practice remains socially accepted in certain areas. In Badhana village alone, five such marriages have been recorded in the last six years.

The Hatti community, declared a Scheduled Tribe in 2022, has around 300,000 people living across approximately 450 villages in the Trans-Giri belt. While polyandry is no longer widespread, it continues quietly in some villages, especially in remote areas. Similar traditions were historically common in Jaunsar Babar (Uttarakhand) and Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh).

Village elders say such marriages now take place discreetly, though they remain socially accepted. Experts trace the origin of this practice to land preservation: marrying brothers to the same woman ensured ancestral property wasn’t divided. However, they also note that tribal women’s share in property remains a significant and unresolved concern.

For those totally out of the loop, wondering what the big deal is about this restock, the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection is pretty much exactly what it suggests.

This collection of PS5 hardware and accessories was announced last September and released in November. Designed to celebrate the brand’s 30th anniversary, it saw the current generation of PlayStation technology get a retro makeover inspired by the original PlayStation console. Unsurprisingly, it was hugely popular with gamers.

The Collection comprised limited-edition five items: PS5 Pro Bundle, PS5 Slim Bundle, PS5 DualSense Controller, PS5 DualSense Edge Controller and PlayStation Portal.

The entire collection sold out back in September, with a few sporadic restocks through the rest of 2024. We had assumed that was the collection done and dusted, so this restock has come as a real (but very welcome) surprise.

Marcus Rashford in Barcelona to complete loan move from Manchester United

Joining Barcelona has been Rashford’s preferred option since he declared in December that he was ready for a new challenge after being dropped by United head coach Ruben Amorim.

The move will be Rashford’s second consecutive loan spell after a six-month stint with Aston Villa in the second half of last season.

The forward is expected to complete a medical with the La Liga club early this week, with the aim of being able to join Barcelona’s pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea on Thursday.

Should Rashford join the tour, he could come up against former United team-mate Jesse Lingard.

Lingard, 32, is in his second season with K League side FC Seoul, who face Barcelona on 31 July.
