ISLAMABAD: After facing strong backlash on social media, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has chosen to take down the controversial sculpture on Margalla Avenue that shows two golden hands holding spheres, reported The News.

The installation, which quickly became a target of mockery online, drew widespread derision for its perceived lack of aesthetic value and unclear symbolism. Many users called it tone-deaf and questioned its appropriateness in the capital’s public spaces.

On Monday, a CDA spokesperson confirmed that the sculpture was being taken down.

Apparently, the installation had been placed on Margalla Avenue as part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by a real-estate project. However, the CDA says the design was not approved by the relevant CDA department.

It remains unclear whether the decision to remove the sculpture was taken independently by the CDA or if it came in response to directions from higher authorities. There is also ambiguity surrounding how the installation was set up without prior approval from the competent authority.

A CDA official stated that efforts to dismantle the sculpture began with the help of a crane but were interrupted by rain. The process is expected to be completed today. In the meantime, the structure has been covered with cloth. Online, the sculpture has sparked a wave of criticism, memes and jokes, with many calling on the CDA to explain the purpose and meaning of the installation.

Riley Minix drained a buzzer-beating fadeaway to lift the San Antonio Spurs to a 93-91 overtime win over the Utah Jazz in the NBA 2K26 Summer League at Thomas and Mack Center on Monday evening.

The overtime period came down to a wild finish, including a game-tying dunk by Kyle Filipowski, followed by Minix knocking down a catch-and-shoot fadeaway off an inbounds pass for the win.

Filipowski put on a show, as he led the Jazz with 35 points on 11-for-19 shooting and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Meanwhile, David Jones Garcia led the way for the Spurs with 28 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal in 27 minutes off the bench.

The game was off to a competitive start until the Jazz rallied to a 14-point lead halfway through the third quarter. However, the Spurs responded from there and fought their way to a two-point advantage heading into the fourth. They kept the momentum going and earned an eight-point lead, but it was the Jazz’s turn to fight back, as they pushed to a two-point edge, before Spurs rookie Dylan Harper hit the tying bucket to force overtime.

Jones Garcia scored six straight points in overtime to lead the Spurs until Minix sank the game-winner. Minix, who went undrafted in 2024, had 13 points, six rebounds, a steal and two blocks in 29 minutes, while Harper finished with 16 points, two rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.

Japan bond yields surge as fiscal fears mount ahead of election

Japan’s benchmark 10-year government bond yield climbed to its highest level since 2008 on Tuesday as concerns about fiscal spending mount ahead of an upper house election.

Yields on the 10-year instrument climbed to 1.599%, the highest since 2008, data from LSEG showed. Yields on the 30-year JGB also rose to a record high of 3.21%, while Japan’s 20-year government bond yields spiked to their highest level since 1999.

“Japan’s long yields and super-long yields are currently rising due to expectations of fiscal expansion after the Upper House election coming up next week,” said Ken Matsumoto, Japan macro strategist at Credit Agricole CIB.

A sizable number of Japanese politicians and parties are actively discussing consumption tax cuts ahead of the upper house election set to take place Sunday.

People are concerned about the election because the politicians are talking about consumption tax cuts, and tax cuts of any sort in Japan is suicidal.

    Amir Anvarzadeh

Japan equity market strategist at Asymmetric Advisors

Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has maintained that he will not resort to tax cuts funded by more debt issuance, although opposition parties are calling for tax cuts and more spending, which could lead to more debt.

This political uncertainty is creating doubt over whether Japan’s government will stick to fiscal discipline, said Vishnu Varathan, Mizuho Securities’ head of macro research for Asia ex-Japan.

Japan has one of the world’s highest levels of public debt relative to the size of its economy. While the government has flagged the need for more fiscal discipline, it relies heavily on issuing new debt to fund its obligations. Tax revenues alone are insufficient to cover the government’s expenses.

“The most recent trigger is the election. People are concerned about the election because the politicians are talking about consumption tax cuts, and tax cuts of any sort in Japan is suicidal,” said Amir Anvarzadeh, Japan equity market strategist at Asymmetric Advisors, who added that tax cuts would be dire given the fiscal situation that Japan is facing.

“This is why the bond vigilantes are out. And they’re saying: we need more yield to invest in the bond market. So there’s a shorting [going on] in the JGB market,” he told CNBC.

Aside from the upcoming election, there are underlying factors at play that could bring forward the Bank of Japan’s next rate hike. While still at elevated levels, Tokyo’s inflation eased to 3.1% year on year in June, slower than the 3.6% in May.

“This could prompt the BOJ to revise its inflation forecast upward, potentially accelerating the timeline for its next rate hike,” said Carlos Casanova, senior economist for Asia at Union Bancaire Privée.

On top of that, supply-demand imbalances in the Japanese bond markets could become more pronounced, especially as life insurers have less capacity to absorb additional supply, said Masahiko Loo, senior fixed income strategist at State Street Investment Management.

In June, the Bank of Japan said it would slow the pace of its government bond purchase reductions starting April next year, and kept its benchmark interest rate steady at 0.5% as economic risks mount. The BOJ reiterated plans to trim its monthly Japanese government bond purchases by roughly 400 billion yen ($2.76 billion) each quarter to about 3 trillion yen till March 2026, in line with guidance set last year.

  • Acromegaly linked to higher cancer risk

Acromegaly linked to higher cancer risk

People with the rare growth hormone disorder acromegaly have a significantly higher risk of developing various types of cancer, often at ages younger than typically seen in the general population, according to a study being presented Monday at ENDO 2025, the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco, Calif.

Our findings suggest that acromegaly may play a bigger role in cancer risk than previously thought, highlighting the need for increased awareness and early cancer screening in this population,” said lead researcher Hitam Hagog Natour, M.D., a visiting scholar at the pancreatic cancer research lab, at the department of surgery in Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn.

Acromegaly is a disorder that occurs when the body produces too much growth hormone, putting patients at higher risk for developing certain types of cancer. Produced mainly in the pituitary gland, growth hormone controls the physical growth of the body. In adults, too much of this hormone causes bones, cartilage, body organs, and other tissues to increase in size. Common changes in appearance include enlarged or swollen nose, ears, hands, and feet.

Acromegaly is rare. Scientists estimate that between 3 and 14 of every 100,000 people have been diagnosed with acromegaly.

In the new study, the researchers compared 10,207 acromegaly patients to 102,070 matched controls-meaning each person with acromegaly was matched with 10 people without the disorder who were the same sex and age. The results showed that those with acromegaly had higher rates of cancers, including colon, gastric, breast, lung, ovarian, prostate and blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma.

The study also found that higher levels of growth hormone were linked to a greater risk of developing cancer.

Compared to people without the condition, patients with acromegaly had:

    • A 3.3 times higher risk of developing leukemia or lymphoma
    • A 1.9 times higher risk of developing ovarian cancer
    • A 1.8 times higher risk of developing breast cancer
    • A 1.9 times higher risk of developing lung cancer
    • A 1.5 times higher risk of developing prostate cancer

Some of these cancers also appeared at younger ages in the acromegaly group. Ovarian cancer appeared an average of 7.2 years earlier in patients with acromegaly compared to their matched controls, while lung cancer was diagnosed 3.2 years earlier, liver cancer appeared 6.3 years earlier and neuroendocrine cancer was diagnosed 5.7 years earlier.

Study finds no increased risk from vaccine aluminum exposure

A nationwide cohort study of Danish children examined the association between cumulative aluminum exposure from early childhood vaccination and the risk for development of autoimmune, atopic or allergic, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The study found no evidence supporting an increased risk for these disorders associated with exposure to early childhood aluminum-adsorbed vaccines. The findings help close the evidence gap of human data around the association between aluminum-adsorbed vaccines with adverse events, particularly neurological disorders. The findings are published in Annals of Internal Medicine

Researchers from the Statens Serum Institut leveraged national changes in the Danish Childhood Vaccination Program over a 24-year period, during which vaccines with varying aluminum content were introduced. They included 1,224,176 children born in Denmark between 1997 and 2018 and used the Danish nationwide health registries to obtain information on the cumulative aluminum exposure from childhood vaccines administered to each child before age 2 and incident events of 50 different chronic disorders. Specifically, they examined the development of 36 autoimmune, 9 atopic or allergic, and 5 neurodevelopmental related disorders.

Children were followed from 2 years of age for study outcome events until 31 December 2020, or until they reached age 5, died, or were lost to follow-up. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios representing how much the hazard changed when a child received one additional milligram of aluminum in their vaccines by age two compared to a child who received one milligram less. The researchers found a hazard ratio for autoimmune outcomes of 0.98 [95%CI 0.94 to 1.02] per 1-milligram increase in the cumulative aluminum exposure from childhood vaccination. The hazard ratio was 0.99 [95%CI 0.98 to 1.01] for atopic or allergic disorders and 0.93 [95%CI 0.90 to 0.97] for neurodevelopmental disorders.

For the specific disorders of autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, the hazard ratios per 1-milligram increase in the cumulative aluminum exposure from childhood vaccination before age two were 0.93 [95%CI 0.89 to 0.97] and 0.90 [95%CI 0.84 to 0.96], respectively. This nationwide study did not find evidence supporting an increased risk for autoimmune, atopic or allergic, or neurodevelopmental disorders associated with early childhood exposure to aluminum-adsorbed vaccines.

  • Washington weighs in on crypto

    Washington weighs in on crypto

This is an audio transcript of the FT News Briefing podcast episode: ‘Washington weighs in on crypto’

    Marc Filippino
Good morning from the Financial Times. Today is Tuesday, July 15th, and this is your FT News Briefing. The EU is ready to spend big on eastern members. And bitcoin looks like it’s in fact headed to the moon. Plus, Nissan is having a rough go of it, but it’s hoping a focus on the US market can change all that. I’m Marc Filipino, and here’s the news you need to start your day.

    [MUSIC PLAYING]

    Marc Filippino
The European Union is shaking up its budget and its eastern countries are the winners. A leak proposal outlines a new way to allocate more than €750bn of farming and development funds. The plan shifts the common budget to favour newer member states and the ones that border Russia. And it gives those governments more leeway on spending so they could divert money from things like regional development and spend it on defence. The European Commission will officially launch this as part of its seven-year budget tomorrow. That proposal needs to get approval from all 27 member states to pass.

It feels like the cryptocurrency sector is making unprecedented strides right now. Bitcoin hit a record high yesterday. It went north of $122,000. And this is happening as lawmakers in US Congress are set to vote on a series of crypto bills. We have the FT’s digital markets correspondent Nikou Asgari here to talk more about it. Hey, Nikou.

    Nikou Asgari
    Hi.

    Marc Filippino
So Nikou, tell me about the legislation that’s got investors so excited about bitcoin.

    Nikou Asgari
Yeah. So there’s three pieces of legislation that are being debated this week in Washington, and all three of them in one way or another are helping to bring different parts of crypto more in line with traditional finance and to give rules that will give confidence to investors and to companies to use them.

    Nikou Asgari
So for example, there is the Clarity Act or the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. And this is really sort of a market structure bill to give clear rules and regulations on digital assets broadly. Then there’s the Genius Act, which focuses really on stablecoins, which are tokens that are pegged one-to-one typically with the US dollar. And if this is passed, it will help companies, both traditional and crypto, hold and trade and create their own stablecoins much more comfortably than they perhaps are at the moment. And the third one is the Anti-Central Bank Digital Currency Surveillance State Act, which really aims to stop the US Federal Reserve from creating its own digital currency and in doing that will give a lot of power to private stablecoin and private currencies that, you know, exist and make up the majority, if not all of the market at the moment.

    Marc Filippino
OK. Let’s take a step back here because bitcoin wasn’t doing so hot for a while. Nikou. I mean, how did it make this rise to the top?

    Nikou Asgari
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, just a few years ago when Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto exchange FTX collapsed, it sent the price of bitcoin down to as low as about $16,000. Since then, it’s been on a sort of recovery, upward recovery. But really the kicker was when Donald Trump won the election in November and returned to the White House. That has sent the price of bitcoin rising because not only is he, his family, a lot of people in Washington, in the cabinet really pro-crypto. But they’ve also helped crypto become more mainstream.

    Nikou Asgari
They’ve stopped a whole bunch of lawsuits against the biggest crypto companies you can think of. They replaced the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who was previously pretty anti-crypto, with someone who’s pretty friendly towards crypto. And now this week, these new bills that are set to expected to pass all signal, just this change in sentiment towards crypto, which has helped the price of bitcoin rise so much.

    Marc Filippino
And I should say Nikou, they’re not just pro-crypto, the Trump administration, but the Trump family is also involved in crypto, right? They have memecoins.

    Nikou Asgari
Yeah, absolutely. Trump and his wife Melania have their own memecoins, which are just tokens that you can buy and trade like any other. Trump and his sons also run and promote this company called World Liberty Financial, which again has its own stablecoin and another coin that they’re set to launch. So they’re making a lot of money also from the industry that the president himself is promoting.

    Marc Filippino
I always ask this question when there’s steps being taken to make crypto more mainstream, but isn’t the whole point of crypto to be a decentralised currency? It’s not Fiat, it’s not controlled by the government. What does it mean that the government is getting more involved and the price is still going up?

    Nikou Asgari
Yeah. It’s so interesting, isn’t it? I mean, crypto was, as you said, created out of this idea of we’re anti-establishment. We don’t want regulators, governments looking at us, identifying us, you know, being in any way involved with what’s happening here and yet now you’ve got the biggest crypto companies in the world that are so delighted that these rules are set to be passed and so delighted that Washington is so interested. It’s a strange sort of balancing act, but I guess from the crypto companies, they say that as traditional finance gets more involved, as crypto becomes more mainstream with people being more comfortable with it, it’s just for the best, right? You get more money, you get more investors, and it’s to the benefit of these crypto companies.

    Marc Filippino
That’s the FT’s digital markets correspondent Nikou Asgari. Thanks, Nikou.

    Nikou Asgari
    Thanks.

    Marc Filippino
UK chancellor Rachel Reeves is gonna try to hype up the country’s budget today. She’s speaking to London’s top banking brass in the city’s Mansion House. The speech is a big moment for Reeves. She looked like she might lose her job just two weeks ago. That’s when MPs from her own Labour party rebelled against her plan to cut billions of pounds on welfare spending. The cuts didn’t happen and that left a big hole in the budget. FT sources expect Reeves to emphasise economic growth and stability in her speech today and some are worried that she’ll fill the remaining fiscal hole with higher taxes on the financial services industry.

    [ MUSIC PLAYING]

    Marc Filippino
Nissan is facing a bit of an uphill battle, and the company is betting that the latest version of its unique hybrid technology will expand sales in the US. The tech is called e-Power. But even if the push is successful, is it enough to save the company? The FT’s, Harry Dempsey covers Nissan from Japan. Hey, Harry.

    Harry Dempsey
    Hey, thanks for having me.

    Marc Filippino
So what is Nissan’s hybrid tech e-Power and how does it differ from other hybrids?

    Harry Dempsey
So this hybrid tech, it’s very similar to the Toyota Prius style hybrid technology. The feel of the drive is like an EV, but you don’t need to charge it at your home. You just fill it with gas as normal and you know you have a good driving range with good fuel economy and is now in its third generation for Nissan. And it’s very important because hybrid cars have been selling like hot cakes in the US. And this is the area where NIS Nissan has really lacked this sort of product because it was worried that this e-Power technology didn’t do well enough on the highways and Americans drive quite a lot on the motorways at high speed, so that was important. But now it feels with the third generation of this technology that it’s good enough now to sort of make a success of the US market.

    Marc Filippino
Harry, just remind us, how badly are things going over at Nissan globally?

    Harry Dempsey
Things are going very badly for Nissan. So sales were about 5.5mn vehicles back in 2018. That’s now down to about 3.5mn. So sales have been gradually dropping in recent years, and cash flow is a real problem for the company. It really does need to get sales going again, which is what this e-Power technology is going to be vital for doing.

    Marc Filippino
And what are the plans to market its e-Power technology here in the US?

    Harry Dempsey
Yeah, so the e-Power technology is going to feature on the Rogue, which is one of their best-selling vehicles in the US, which is an SUV vehicle. And I think the challenge for Nissan really is that the brand has been damaged somewhat in the US because the vehicles haven’t been selling, and therefore the company then sells them at a discount and it gives them this feeling that your brand is a sort of cheap one. And I think the other challenge is this is the third generation of e-Power and consumers still don’t really know what it is. It’s not a simple hybrid, but in a way for a consumer, it kind of just is a hybrid. What matters for a consumer is how much does it cost and what’s the fuel economy like? And so I think for Nissan, it’s a vexing question, which I think has led to a rather sort of confused campaign and messaging about what e-Power is.

    Marc Filippino
OK. But would success in the US actually secure a comeback for Nissan? I mean, why is that market so important for the company?

    Harry Dempsey
So for a lot of the legacy car companies, China has become impossible, and that was the source of growth and profits for them in the last decade. But Chinese EV manufacturers have taken over that market, so that leaves you with a dilemma of where do you go? Where is safe? The US is really the key one for the company to work out. It’s considered to be protected from the Chinese competition because the US does not want Chinese car companies coming in.

    Harry Dempsey
And there is a question of is there still a good window to sell this kind of hybrid-esque technology? And there probably is a little bit of a decent window, but whether that’s enough to guarantee the success of the company, when you think of the huge amount of money that’s needed to be spent on this shift to a new technology, I just don’t think e-Power on its own is going to be enough. And Nissan itself, I think admits it needs partners to help give it the scale and the financial power to compete.

    Marc Filippino

Long sitting hours raise breast cancer odds for inactive obese women

A new study reveals that staying active can erase the breast cancer risk tied to long hours of sitting for obese women, underscoring the power of daily movement for prevention.

Study: Association between daily sitting time and breast cancer among obese women: a nationwide population-based study. Image Credit: Studio Romantic / Shutterstock

Obese and physically inactive women who spend a prolonged period of time in a sitting position are at a significantly higher prevalence of breast cancer, as reported by a study published in the journal BMC Women’s Health. However, this association was not observed in obese women who were physically active.

    Background

Obesity is a chronic metabolic condition caused by excessive accumulation of fat in the body, especially in the abdomen. A body mass index (BMI) above 30 kg/m2 is defined as obesity, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, more than 600 million people are living with obesity, with women having a higher prevalence than men. Obesity in women is associated with many health complications, including abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), infertility, and certain cancers.

Sedentary behavior, defined by any activity with energy expenditure below 1.5 metabolic equivalents, is a modifiable risk factor of many health complications, including cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, insulin resistance, muscle weakness, and reduced energy expenditure. All these conditions can potentially increase the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Prolonged daily sitting as a sedentary behavior has been found to be associated with increased prevalence of breast cancer in the general female population. However, evidence linking sedentary behavior with breast cancer prevalence in high-risk populations, such as obese women, is lacking.

The current study, led by researchers at the Meizhou People’s Hospital, China, aimed to investigate the association between daily sitting time and breast cancer prevalence in obese women and examine the role of physical activity in mitigating this association.

    Study design

The researchers analyzed data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is an ongoing health and nutrition assessment survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics in the United States since 1999.

A total of 9706 obese women from the survey were included in this study. The participants were divided into four groups depending on their daily sitting duration. The sitting durations were less than four hours per day, four to six hours per day, six to eight hours per day, and more than eight hours per day.

The impact of daily sitting time on breast cancer prevalence was assessed after adjusting for socio-demographic, lifestyle, and medical confounding factors. Breast cancer status was self-reported, which may introduce misclassification bias.

    Key findings

The analysis of the NHANES database led to the identification of 271 breast cancer cases among the entire study population of 9706 obese women. A significant variation in the breast cancer prevalence was observed among women with different durations of daily sitting.

Specifically, a significantly higher prevalence of breast cancer was observed among women with higher sedentary time (4-6 hours, 6-8 hours, and more than 8 hours) compared to those with lower sedentary time (less than 4 hours). Among physically inactive obese women, the fully adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for breast cancer were 2.56 (95% CI: 1.53–5.86) for 4–6 hours, 2.12 (1.40–4.80) for 6–8 hours, and 2.43 (1.37–5.84) for more than 8 hours, compared to those sitting less than 4 hours per day, demonstrating a nonlinear dose-response relationship. In contrast, no significant increase in breast cancer prevalence was found in physically active obese women at any sitting duration.

The risk was particularly pronounced in certain subgroups: women aged 60 years or above, non-Hispanic whites, women with higher educational background, post-menopausal women, and those with higher obesity levels (BMI ≥35 kg/m²).

    Study significance

The study findings reveal that a daily sedentary time of more than four hours is associated with a higher prevalence of breast cancer in obese women, but only in those who are physically inactive. Regular physical activity completely mitigated the association, with active women showing no elevated prevalence regardless of sitting time.

The association between sedentary behavior and breast cancer prevalence is more pronounced among women aged 60 years or above, non-Hispanic whites, women with higher educational background, post-menopausal women, and those with higher obesity levels.

An imbalance in sex hormone levels can potentially increase the risk of breast cancer. Existing evidence indicates that reducing sex hormone levels with regular physical activity can be associated with reduced breast cancer risk, potentially increase anti-cancer immunity, and improve cancer prognosis.

Sedentary behaviors are also known to increase hormone levels due to obesity, insulin resistance, and systemic inflammation, which may collectively contribute to the development of breast cancer.

Another notable finding of the study is the beneficial impact of physical activity in mitigating the adverse association of prolonged sitting time on breast cancer prevalence. Regular physical activity has many physiological benefits, including reduction of visceral adipose tissue, regulation of sex and metabolic hormonal levels, reduction of inflammation, and improvement of insulin sensitivity. These benefits collectively can potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer and improve its prognosis.

Overall, the study findings suggest that physical activity can be considered a promising intervention to help reduce breast cancer prevalence in obese women, especially in older and post-menopausal women. In these high-risk populations, priority should be given to reducing sitting time to less than four hours per day and to engaging in physical activity to counteract metabolic and hormonal imbalances.

Because of the cross-sectional design, the study could not establish direct causal associations between daily sitting time and breast cancer prevalence. Future longitudinal studies are needed to explore whether prolonged sitting precedes breast cancer diagnosis or reflects post-diagnosis behavioral changes. It is also important to note that breast cancer diagnosis in this study was self-reported, which may introduce bias.
