Google Confirms New Hacker Protection For 3 Billion Android Users

Google security updates are not exactly in short supply: Chrome browser vulnerabilities, Google Messages sender verification, and, of course, new Gmail features all vying for your attention. Sometimes, however, there’s a danger of drowning in updates which leads to the most important of them potentially going unnoticed. Google has just published a posting to ensure that doesn’t happen with the latest protections for Android users against hack attacks. And quite rightly so, as it’s not easy protecting more than 3 billion users, with multiple risk profiles across that user base, from hackers. As Google said, “Less sophisticated attacks by commodity malware can be very lucrative for attackers when done at scale, but so can sophisticated attacks on targeted users.” Let me, or rather Google, introduce you to Advanced Protection that does exactly what it says on the tin, allowing you to tailor your security protections to fit your personal risk profiles.

Google Confirms Advanced Security Protection In Chrome On Android

You might be forgiven for thinking that the only threat you need to worry about as an Android smartphone user is the SMS one, as attacks surge and hackers employ new mobile SMS Blaster hardware weaponry. You would, however, be very wrong indeed. Smartphone hackers have a diverse array of attacks to choose from, each targeting a different victim group and employing a different methodology. Some of the more commonly used have been picked up upon by David Adrian, Javier Castro and Peter Kotwicz from the Google Chrome Security Team in a July 8 posting.

Advanced Protection acts as an extension to Google’s existing Advanced Protection Program, by providing a device-level security setting for those Android users most at risk. Think of it as being a “single control point for at-risk users on Android that enables important security settings across applications,” Google said. This integrates with Chrome on Android, the trio of security experts explained, in three specific ways:

    • By enabling the always use secure connections setting to protect users from hackers injecting malicious content or reading data.
    • By enabling full site isolation, as long as your Android device has at least 4GB of RAM, to prevent the loading of malicious sites in the same process as legitimate websites.
    • By reducing the attack surface through the disabling of JavaScript optimizations.

“We additionally recommend at-risk users join the Advanced Protection Program with their Google accounts,” the Google Chrome security team said, “which will require the account to use phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication methods and enable Advanced Protection on any of the user’s Android devices.”

Advanced Protection is available on Google Android 16 in Chrome version 137 and later.

  • HMOs could be used to help Liverpool’s rising homeless population

HMOs could be used to help Liverpool’s rising homeless population

Houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) could be used by Liverpool City Council as part of its strategy to tackle homelessness.

Facing “unprecedented demand” on housing services, the local authority said it was reviewing its approach to reducing rough sleeping and homelessness in the city.

The council said it was looking to use a range of temporary accommodation services, including the use of HMOs, studio flats and other properties.

A report prepared for the council’s cabinet said increased levels of rough sleeping were partly due to more no-fault evictions and rising rents.

The average number of people living on Liverpool’s streets between April and September 2024 was 30, an increase on the 22 typically recorded during the same period in 2023, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

New figures released by the city council have revealed how, in one month this year, 166 people were seen by the Liverpool Assertive Outreach and Response Service to be “engaging in a street lifestyle”.

Additionally, there were 1,635 households living in temporary accommodation as of 1 June.

The report said: “There has been unprecedented demand on the council’s housing solutions service in recent years and an increase in homeless presentations, with the service receiving an increase in requests for help and assistance from those at risk of homelessness.

“This is due, in part, to an increase in no-fault evictions, family and friends no longer being able to accommodate and affordability concerns as rents increase.”

It said the city council would not hold any leases, tenancies or licences of the properties.

Instead, the local authority would “procure a service providing a minimum number of properties” from a property provider.

The property provider would deliver all property and tenancy-related functions, “with the opportunity to bring more properties on board as required”.

The iPad mini may not be the best tablet for creatives or professionals who need the highest-powered tablet out there. However, for folks who mostly enjoy using their tablet for streaming or reading, this ultra-portable tablet checks the boxes. The 128GB of storage will likely be more than enough for less intensive tasks, and at 8.3 inches, it feels comfortable to hold for longer periods of time. Plus, the smaller size will be great for summer travel. (For anyone not particularly into the tech color e-readers are offering at the moment, this iPad gives a great alternative with some more versatility.)

  • Microbiome, a new novel that makes microbiome research accessible to the general public

Microbiome, a new novel that makes microbiome research accessible to the general public

The human microbiome, particularly microbial communities living in our gut, has captured the interest of both scientists and the lay public due to its potential to change how nutrition and medical treatments work.

Patrick Veiga, PhD, Research Director of the MetaGenoPolis unit at the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE), and gut microbiome expert, has just launched the novel “Mission: Microbiome – Metchnikoff’s Legacy” in which science and suspense blend to digest the most relevant microbiome research findings in an easy-to-understand language. Joël Doré, PhD, Research Director at the INRAE and gut microbial ecologist, wrote the book’s prologue. The book is available in English, French, and will soon be released in Italian.

Through the lens of a story involving microbiologist Rafael Martins, who must save his wife Clara and the reputation of Professor Andrew Smith after falsified research result come to light, Veiga delves into the hidden work of cutting-edge microbiome research, from a blend of gut microorganisms administered in capsules to manage recurring Clostridioides difficile infections to the discovery of a gene that acts like a satiety inhibitor that is highly abundant in the American microbiome and nearly absent in the Japanese. The setting is the fascinating city of Boston.

Regarding what inspired the author to write a science thriller about the microbiome, Veiga acknowledged to GMFH editors that: “today, a lot of people know what the gut microbiome is. But most still don’t realize how much it could change medicine and nutrition. More than 100 years ago, researchers like Metchnikoff were pioneers in studying the “gut flora.” As a legacy of their work, yogurt and fermented foods became part of our diets. And today, pharmacies are full of probiotics and prebiotics.

Now imagine the legacy of today’s research: next-generation probiotics, precision medicine, and personalized nutrition. That’s hope for better health. And this book is a message of that hope”.

Given the emerging role of gut microbes in health and disease, emerging research must be clearly communicated to help the non-expert audiences interpret findings accurately and make informed health choices. Beyond immersing the reader in the scientific thriller, Veiga also separates the wheat from the chaff, separating hype from real facts in the microbiome field. The format of a good story makes microbiome science more memorable, not only for the lay public but even for scientists. The end of the book includes relevant scientific references that support the statement in each chapter, so the curious reader can check the information presented throughout the book.

The book highlights that diet and lifestyle are the most studied tools available to care for our gut microbiome. Regarding diet, a high diversity of fibers and polyphenols is essential to nourish gut microbes. This implies eating a variety of whole grains, fruits, nuts, and pulses, and not only increasing the amount of these food staples. Fermented foods like yogurt also increase the diversity of gut microbes, and scientists are figuring out how they impact the gut and immune system.

Veiga states, “Science isn’t just for scientists. The microbiome is part of our story, our health, our diet. I hope this book sparks curiosity, conversation, and maybe even new habits!”.

  • In reversal, Trump will pay for key rockets and space stations for Europe | International

In reversal, Trump will pay for key rockets and space stations for Europe | International

Buried in the 870 pages of the One Big Beautiful Bill, there is a concession to Republican representatives from states closely linked to the manned space exploration program, which was facing massive layoffs and unprecedented cuts. Another victim of this concession is the tycoon Elon Musk, as Trump’s decision takes away lucrative contracts for his space rockets. Europe, on the other hand, is breathing a sigh of relief.

The law recently approved by Congress revives Gateway, the future space station that will orbit the Moon. The federal government will spend $2.6 billion on this manned base, the construction of which also involves the European Space Agency (ESA) along with Canada, Japan and the United Arab Emirates. The measure is a sharp U-turn from what Trump was proposing just over a month ago: to completely cancel the project and leave all its international partners in the lurch.

Something similar is happening with the Space Launch System (SLS), with which the U.S. government aims to send the first woman astronaut to the Moon in 2027. The BBB will ultimately include more than $4 billion to fund at least two additional flights with this launch vehicle, beyond those already planned for the Artemis 2 and 3 missions. Trump’s original idea was to eliminate it after these two flights and perhaps resort to the Starship being developed by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company. But this latter system is far from ready to carry astronauts, and has already accumulated several spectacular explosions, the last of them before even attempting takeoff.

Furthermore, the clash between the U.S. president and the tycoon is increasingly evident. Musk has announced that he will create a political party in the United States to steal voters from Trump. The president has called it “ridiculous” and described Musk as a “train wreck.” The president has also threatened to withdraw important public contracts held by Musk’s companies such as SpaceX and the electric car manufacturer Tesla.

Trump had bought into Musk’s idea of sending astronauts to Mars as soon as possible, a very different option than the one the U.S. space agency had been planning for years. The new funding returns to the original vision of first sending astronauts to the Moon, building an orbital station there, and recovering the Orion capsules for the Artemis 4 and 5 missions, formally planned for 2028 and 2030, which will also be transported by SLS rockets, which both Trump and Musk had criticized as too expensive and obsolete.

One of the big winners from these measures is Europe, which had watched with horror as many of the joint programs it had invested the most money and effort in were threatened with cancellation. The European Space Agency (ESA), for example, is responsible for building a habitation module for the future Gateway lunar station, as well as a storage module, a fuel depot, and the only place in the entire facility with windows, through which astronauts can look out to contemplate the lunar surface and outer space. Europe will also benefit from the extended life of the Orion spacecraft, for which it manufactures the service module that provides power and propulsion.

Trump’s mega-law also includes a significant injection of $1.2 billion in funding for the International Space Station (ISS) until 2029, before its retirement the following year. This is also key for Europe, as it could ensure that European astronauts, including the Spaniard Pablo Álvarez, can travel to space before 2030.

    An uninhabited space station

“If the United States pulled out of Gateway, the project would be dead,” acknowledges an executive from one of Europe’s leading aerospace companies. “Europe could have completed the station on its own, but for the time being, it doesn’t have access to space for its astronauts; it relies on Russian Soyuz spacecraft or commercial U.S. spacecraft, so what we were facing was having an uninhabited space station on the Moon,” he explains.

The main reason the United States has decided to increase funding for the ISS is geopolitical, these sources point out. China has an Earth orbital station, and it would be a complete defeat if the “Western world” didn’t have a similar facility, the ISS, or a larger one, the Gateway, when it’s ready later this decade.

On the other hand, nobody can save NASA’s robotic exploration missions and other scientific programs, which are facing unprecedented cuts. Trump’s budget only includes increases for manned exploration programs, but in return, he will cut the science budget in half. This will force the cancellation of 41 projects, including 19 active space missions.

The person responsible for this major change of tack is Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and who is believed to have pushed for the new funds to prevent the hundreds of layoffs that Trump’s policies would have caused in his state.

“It’s been a lightning-fast change of direction, perhaps the fastest I’ve ever seen in this field,” Casey Dreier, head of space policy at the Planetary Society of the United States, told this newspaper. However, the expert at this non-profit organization founded by Carl Sagan in 1980 believes the scope of the new law is “disappointing” because it doesn’t include any relief from the planned cuts to science, education, and other areas. This is also explained by politics. “By an accident of history, NASA’s human space exploration centers are all in Republican-governed states. No Democratic congressman was going to support this law, so only the highest priorities of the Republican Party were considered,” Dreier explains. The specialist believes this situation opens the possibility that NASA’s science sector will fare somewhat better in the congressional debate on the budget, which must conclude before October 1. Since the BBB has set amounts for human exploration, perhaps this will leave some more money for other NASA projects and other federal agencies, which are facing brutal cuts.

The outlook for the coming months remains highly uncertain. NASA has been in a state of disarray since Donald Trump unexpectedly decided to remove Jared Isaacman, a billionaire he himself had appointed to head the agency. Isaacman is very close to Musk and had to juggle in the Senate to defend the country’s desire to reach the Moon before China, but also to prioritize missions to Mars, as Musk wanted. Ultimately, the rift between the president and the magnate left him without a position, and with no successor in sight. “I also found it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon’s, who was involved in the Space Business, should run NASA, given that NASA is such a significant part of Elon’s corporate life,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

Saudi Arabia and Iran hold talks after Tehran’s truce with Israel – World

Iran’s foreign minister has held talks with Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, the Saudi foreign ministry said, two weeks after a ceasefire between regional rivals Iran and Israel began.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said his country hoped the truce would contribute to regional stability, and emphasised Riyadh’s position “in supporting dialogue through diplomatic means as a path to resolving disputes,” the ministry said in a post on X early on Wednesday.

According to the Saudi ministry, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi “expressed his gratitude” to Riyadh for its condemnation of Israel’s attacks on Iran last month.

Israel launched its unprecedented bombing campaign on Iran on June 13, targeting military and nuclear facilities as well as residential areas. The strikes killed more than 1,000 people in Iran, including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists, according to Tehran.

Israel, in turn, was hit by waves of drone and missile fire from Iran, which Israeli authorities said left at least 28 people dead.

The United States, which had been in talks with Iran about its nuclear programme since April, joined Tel Aviv’s war and carried out its own strikes on Iran on June 22, targeting several nuclear sites.

The talks between Tehran and Washington have since stalled, but the ceasefire between Iran and Israel has been in place since June 24.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have often been on opposing sides of regional conflicts, including in Syria and Yemen. The two regional heavyweights broke off diplomatic relations in 2016 before re-establishing them in 2023 under a rapprochement deal brokered by China.

It amounted to a diplomatic achievement for Prince Mohammed, who has taken a more conciliatory approach to regional diplomacy in recent years.

Saudi Arabia condemned the Israeli strikes on Iran last month, calling them “aggressions” and a “clear violation of international laws”.

Riyad also expressed its “great concern” following the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Araghchi held “fruitful conversations” with Prince Mohammed, as well as Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Defence Minister Prince Khaled bin Salman about bilateral relations and developments in the region.
