Govt ready for dialogue with Balochistan political leader, NA told

State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Friday reaffirmed the government’s readiness to engage with Balochistan’s leadership and political representatives to find practical solutions to the province’s longstanding issues as the Opposition’s PTI staged a walkout from the House, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Speaking in the National Assembly, the minister said that although a protest is ongoing on a major road in the Red Zone in front of National Press, authorities have been providing security and necessary facilitation for several days.
“The government, along with the district administration, has been in continuous contact with the protesters, trying to address their concerns through proper channels,” he added.
He said, that while the protest was initially meant to highlight specific issues, some individuals have at times misused it for personal or political point-scoring. “We remain in dialogue with the protestors and are ready to engage with them on a comprehensive plan to address their lawful demands,” he said.
He highlighted previous efforts by political parties, including discussions with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and other leadership, as well as the Prime Minister’s Committee on Balochistan, where these issues were addressed openly.
On the issue of missing persons, he clarified that nearly 2,000 registered cases exist under the law, and the relevant commission monitors these matters strictly according to rules. “The government does not allow any one to act beyond legal boundaries, and the issue of missing persons should not be politicized or used for ulterior purposes,” he added.
Responding to another point, he said, “Holding political gatherings without proper clearance creates soft targets, whether school buses, markets, mosques, or other public spaces. Terrorists exploit these vulnerabilities.”
He said that security assessments must be completed before any event proceeds to ensure public safety.
He said that National Action Plan, developed in coordination with all provincial governments and political parties, will significantly reduce terrorism.

  • FO spokesperson says future of refugees ‘up to Pakistan’ – Pakistan

FO spokesperson says future of refugees ‘up to Pakistan’ – Pakistan

Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan on Friday said that Pakistan will decide what to do with the refugees it is hosting, such as those from Afghanistan.

Last month, Pakistan started deporting up to 1 million documented Afghan refugees ahead of its deadline for them to leave, following the interior ministry’s July 31 announcement that Proof of Registration (PoR) cardholders — the last category of Afghans legally residing in Pakistan without visas — became unlawful residents after their cards expired on June 30.

Addressing a press briefing today, Khan said, “Those Afghans waiting to travel to Germany should be deported as soon as possible,” referring to 2,400 Afghan refugees who were promised refuge by Berlin, before its approach to migrants hardened under a new government. Germany has since announced it is considering an appeal to take in 200 refugees.

“Germany should take in these refugees as soon as possible,” the spokesperson added. “Pakistani law will apply to those Afghans living here. We will decide what to do with refugees in Pakistan.”

Khan also referred to an August statement from the German foreign ministry on X, which said that Berlin takes the issue “very seriously”.

“I have seen the German foreign minister’s statement,” Khan said. “We are actually encouraged by it. I hope the Germans take in the large group of Afghans as soon as possible, as several deadlines have passed.

“As promised, we hope they take the matter seriously and take in the Afghans that they promised they would.”

Pakistan is not a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention. Instead, it operates under the Foreigners Act, which empowers the authorities to arrest, hold, and deport foreigners, including refugees and asylum seekers, who do not possess valid documentation.

Additionally, the spokesperson said that Kabul would need to take the issue of terrorism in Afghanistan seriously, stating, “Terrorist safe havens still exist in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan knows how to defend its territory and its people,” Khan said.

“An operation was carried out in the border area with Afghanistan against terrorists,” he added, referring to drone strikes allegedly carried out by Pakistan on August 28. “Afghanistan needs to stop allowing its territory to be used for acts of terrorism.”

Islamabad has repeatedly warned Kabul to prevent its soil from being used to stage attacks in Pakistan, and that it is fully capable of targeting terrorists who carry out such attacks.

During the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) meeting of the Council of Heads of State, members reaffirmed their commitment to the country’s establishment as an independent, neutral and peaceful state, free from terrorism, war and drugs, and expressed their readiness to support the efforts of the international community to ensure peace and development in the country.

“Member states reiterated that the formation of an inclusive government with broad participation of representatives of all ethno-political groups of Afghan society is the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the country,” the declaration said.

  • Bananas vs sour grapes in National Assembly today

Bananas vs sour grapes in National Assembly today

The national assembly ran two sessions today. Not much was acheived in either of them. “Count the quorum,” chorused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members of National Assembly, as the official session commenced.

“We were meant to discuss the floods and the terror attack in Balochistan today, please sit down,” pleaded NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq as the PTI members moved towards the exit.

On a day, when Punjab is reeling from over two weeks of relentless, uninterrupted flooding, and the country is overwhelmed with residual damage from recent deathly floods in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, the opposition and the government could not set aside their personal disdain for each other long enough to take up the day’s agenda.

Thousands of citizens across the country have been displaced. They are cramped in make shift tents and government schools, where bathroom facilities are scarce and food supply is limited. Livestock has been uprooted and vast acres of agricultural land devastated.

Read: Did India deliberately flood Pakistan?

This monsoon season, which began on June 16, has claimed 884 lives and injured at least 1,176. In Buner, entire families have perished in landslides triggered by torrential rain while across Punjab entire villages have been uprooted.

Elsewhere, in Balochistan, there has been a spate of terror attacks in recent months with the most recent taking earlier this week, when a suicide bomber decimated 15 civilans in Quetta near a poltical rally. The attacker had meant to target the rally taken out by Balochistan National Party (BNP)-Mengal in protest of Balochistan Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Dr Mahrung Baloch and other Baloch political leaders’ arrest, and a police crackdown on ongoing sit-ins. Quetta District authorities had reportedly denied BNP-Mengal lisence to hold the rally.

Yet, our elected legislators, members of National Assembly, continue their staunch tradition of letting intra party disputes stand higher than national concerns.

Federal Law Minister Azam Tarar accused the PTI of being “selfish” and positioning their political ambitions above the “country’s needs”.

Yet, when PTI’s Barrister Gohar Ali Khan drew attention to the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) performance during the floods, live feed of the session was disrupted on the state broadcaster’s channel.

Khan ignored the law minister and marched down the aisle, exiting with the rest of the opposition lawmakers. Khan said this was part of PTI’s continued boycott of the house and set up his party’s own impromptu assembly outside the parliament premises. Asad Qaiser led the proceedings during this “awami assembly” – as they put it. Here, a “resolution” was passed to extend the deadline for repatriation of Afghan citizens. Those privy to the matter remain unaware of this “assembly’s” jurisdiction.

Speaker Sadiq took this opportunity to remind the house that PTI complains of not being given space to put forth their views before the house and yet, were leaving now when they had the floor.

As water heads downstream from Multan to Sindh, it is apparent that the public cannot look to the country’s leaders for comfort. Are these the people’s representatives who will lead us out of disaster as the country grapples with climate change and a resurgance in terrorism?

Videos of hurling of the egg are doing rounds on social media. The unpleasant incident has drawn ire from the opposition party’s leaders and supporters.

The egg was allegedly hurled by two women, attending the presser, who left the site immediately after throwing the egg. They were chased by PTI workers before they boarded their vehicle parked nearby. However, police have reportedly taken the suspects into custody right away.

Rawalpindi Police in a statement said the two women belonged to the PTI party and they had come with members of the All Government Employees Grand Alliance and the All Pakistan Clerks Association to seek fulfillment of their demands.

“The egging incident took place upon Aleema Khan’s not answering the questions asked by the women,” they said, adding that the women have been arrested by police.

Aleema has been campaigning for freedom of incarcerated former premier Imran, vowing not to rest till his release from prison.
