Gamescom 2025: Elder Scrolls Online talks seasons reception, future plans, and its new leadership structure

There is certainly no shortage of things to discuss with the devs of Elder Scrolls Online, whether it’s wider studio matters like layoffs and leadership changes or game-related things like scribing and subclassing. Some of those matters were touched on during a WCCFTech interview at Gamescom with new ESO director Nick Giacomini and now studio director Rich Lambert.

That change in roles was one of the first questions addressed by the pair, with Lambert explaining that he’ll focus on studio-wide initiatives and future projects while Giacomini will handle ESO’s future direction. As for the vision for ESO’s future, Giacomini says that he and Lambert share similar thoughts on listening to the playerbase first and making sure the now 11 year-old MMORPG evolves.

That talk about evolution segues into a question about the MMORPG’s new seasons model and how it’s been received by players so far. While both admitted that the dust hasn’t really settled on the shift, they also feel that most players are beginning to see the dev team apply some of the promised experimentation such as the recently announced Writhing Wall event.

“Part of the philosophy change is that it prevents us from getting locked into this extremely long development cycle, so we have more opportunities to try things to engage,” says Giacomini. “I think this is very much a transitional year. By the next year, players are going to see more change and understand it better.”

The interview then moves into some of the more focused plans for ESO, with confirmation that more system-specific updates will continue forward, the Infinite Archive may be expanded if players want it to, and the potential to expand on the scribing system, though it is also noted that not much of what’s planned for 2026 can be discussed yet. The pair also consider how subclassing has shifted the MMORPG’s meta and how players use it to engage in content like PvE trials, as well as talk about how to best balance things to ensure those who play just a single class aren’t left behind or that players aren’t forced into one subclass choice.

Finally, the question about the impact of layoffs was touched on: Both admitted that the effects among devs and the two personally were still very raw, but they also resolved to pour full focus into ESO in order to achieve that 30-year game ambition.

“We are not shutting the doors and backing down and cutting, mothballing ESO to run it out,” responds Lambert. “[W]e’re focused on moving ahead and forging ahead with the people we have left. We want to make ESO the best thing it can be, and that’s the goal for all of us.”

Huawei MatePad Mini: Launch date confirmed for compact flagship tablet with OLED screen

Huawei has now confirmed a launch date and name for its upcoming compact high-end tablet. The MatePad Mini is scheduled to debut alongside the tri-folding Mate XTs, and will arrive with an OLED screen and 5G connectivity.

Huawei has now confirmed its intentions to be the next OEM to launch a compact premium tablet. Devices like the RedMagic Astra and Redmi K Pad have debuted in recent months as alternatives to Apple’s iPad Mini, and Huawei looks set to present its contender.

Taking to its Weibo page yesterday, Huawei revealed that it will be debuting a new compact tablet, the MatePad Mini, on September 4:

A different Mini, a super-Mini. See you on September 4th!

The MatePad Mini is widely rumored to launch as a high-end model, with company executive He Gang confirming those reports by calling it a “flagship small tablet”. The company also has other devices scheduled to launch at that same event, including the new Huawei Smart Screen Mate TV, as well as its second-gen tri-folding smartphone—the Mate XTs.

As for the MatePad Mini itself, there’s not much known at the moment. According to leakers WhyLab and Digital Chat Station, however, the tablet will sport an 8.8-inch OLED screen, a Kirin 9-series processor, and the option for 5G cellular connectivity. Three colorways are mooted: Snow White, Spruce Green, and Obsidian Black.

Blizzard Entertainment sues owners of Turtle WoW

Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft, is filing a lawsuit against the owners of Turtle WoW, which is a group of servers housing a series of fan-developed mods and updates, including Mysteries of Azeroth.

As described on the Turtle WoW website, Mysteries of Azeroth is a “fan-made expansion story for World of Warcraft Vanilla that delves deeper into exploring the original lore of the game,” eschewing the changes to the original World of Warcraft that Blizzard introduced through The Burning Crusade expansion in 2007.

Players can access Mysteries of Azeroth by downloading the free client, with the developers accepting but not requiring donations.

In the lawsuit, filed Friday in the Central District of California, Blizzard Entertainment alleges that the developers of Turtle WoW are using Blizzard’s artwork, trademarks, and official code.

A Blizzard spokesperson shared the following statement:

“Our games are built on decades of innovation and creativity, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the integrity of that work for our employees, our partners, and our players. This pirate server illegally uses our code, assets, and trademarks to market an unprotected experience. Given the scale and nature of the infringement we need to pursue formal remedies to protect the world we’ve built.”

Turtle WoW’s first server launched back in 2018, with the group expanding with additional servers over the years to accommodate more players in different regions. Earlier in August, Turtle WoW reached a peak of over 44,000 concurrent players across all servers.

The developers of Turtle WoW have released numerous updates for Mysteries of Azeroth, and the group has also shared plans to release an updated version of the game that rebuilds the client in Unreal Engine 5.

This new version, referred to as Turtle WoW 2.0, is planned to have improved visuals and higher PC requirements, while remaining compatible with a Legacy version that players can use if they prefer the older look.

Notably, Blizzard Entertainment launched World of Warcraft: Classic in 2019, giving an official version of the original game experience. The developers have continued to update Classic with the original expansions, such as The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and most recently, Mists of Pandaria.

World of Warcraft: Classic requires an active subscription in order to access it, just like mainline World of Warcraft.

While this unfolds, the main ongoing story of World of Warcraft is entering its next phase.

The next expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight, continues the Worldsoul Saga narrative that began with 2024’s expansion, The War Within. This storyline is planned to conclude with a third expansion, The Last Titan.

World of Warcraft: Midnight does not have an exact release date right now, but is currently slated to launch at some point before June 30, 2026.

During Gamescom 2025, Blizzard took part to share details on what players could expect from the expansion, including a new race called the Haranir. The game is also finally introducing the long-requested Player Housing feature, letting adventurers decorate their own homes in Azeroth.

In wider Blizzard news, more and more teams at the Microsoft-owned game developer are unionizing, with over 450 workers on the Diablo franchise recently forming a union. The team cited numerous issues for galvanizing its organization efforts, including repeated waves of layoffs at Microsoft.

This group is following in the example set by several other Blizzard teams, including the World of Warcraft and Overwatch 2 development teams, as well as the Story and Franchise team, the latter of which works on the narrative and cinematics for multiple Blizzard games.

Young mothers – The Irish Times

    The Girls Who Grew Big

    Author: Leila Mottley

    ISBN-13: 978-0-241-70551-3

    Publisher: Fig Tree

    Guideline Price: £16.99

Author Leila Mottley conveys overlooked, destitute worlds populated by characters her own age. Her gripping first novel, Nightcrawling, written when she was 17, was about a teenage prostitute and made her the youngest Booker nominee. Her second, The Girls Who Grew Big, is narrated by three young women in a Florida backwater. Simone, who at 21 is the oldest, has twins and is the founder of the “Girls”, a community of local adolescent mothers. High school brainiac Emory, the only white girl, has an infant. Her pregnant classmate Adele is a champion swimmer.

Nightcrawling was set in Mottley’s home city of Oakland, which gave it specificity and grit. This story unfolds in the fictional town of Padua Beach and although its problems are starkly real, there is a fairytale feeling about this place, beset by hurricanes, alligators and villains like Emory’s racist grandfather Pawpaw. Then there’s the ever-present ocean, “a magnificent green blurring of nothing”, a symbol of the human condition and the girls themselves. “An ever-changing thing. Beautiful, then repulsive.”

Nightcrawling review: promise, but no fireworksOpens in new window ]

Mottley is also a poet, evident in her lavish language. A wave is “a perfect curl, a turquoise that looked like dyed bathwater”. Umbilical cords attached to the “pulsing purple heart” of a placenta, have texture like “pasta before it’s cooked through”. When her lyricism is balanced with concrete details, Mottley excels.

The most compelling sequence is when Simone finds herself pregnant again. The logistics of navigating Florida’s abortion regulations – selling Emory’s breast milk to raise money, travelling twice to a Tallahassee clinic – give her desperation weight.

However, it’s disconcerting to have Simone, Adele and Emory narrate with the same, arresting voice. Furthermore, the book is a touch oversteeped in wisdom, symbolism and, above all, love. In earnestly exhorting us to adulate these women, the book – while not saccharine – can seem cloyingly sweet despite its darkness. Plus, motherhood, so celebrated here, is undermined by how one-dimensionally awful the girls’ own mothers are. Who abandons children in a hurricane?

When there’s humour, it’s welcome, such as Emory’s flinty observations about a teacher, “one of those women whose favourite day of the month was when all her magazine subscriptions came in”. Ultimately, the girls of “Girls” are most heroic when they are less than goddesses. Although the burdens they bear are mighty, they are still just teenagers, and it is when we are reminded of this that they are truly poignant.

  • TikTok introduces voice notes: Here’s what’s new in the app’s messaging upgrade

TikTok introduces voice notes: Here’s what’s new in the app’s messaging upgrade

TikTok is making a big move toward becoming more than just a short-format video app. The company confirmed to TechCrunch that it is rolling out voice notes as part of its latest set of messaging features. Users will now be able to record and send short audio messages in direct messages (DMs), alongside photos and videos.

TikTok finally rolls out voice notes.(representative image/unsplash)

According to Pc Mag, the change comes as voice notes have exploded in popularity among Gen Z, with research showing that around 84% of the generation now uses them. Many younger users say they like voice notes because they build a stronger emotional connection and make it easier to explain complex ideas.

What is new in TikTok messaging?

According to TikTok, users will be able to:

    • Send voice notes in one-on-one or group chats.

    • Share up to nine images or videos in a single DM.

    • Record videos or voice notes up to one minute long.

    • Edit photos and videos in-message before sending.

The features are being introduced gradually and will be available worldwide over the next few weeks, a TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch.

    New safety features

TikTok also highlighted new safety protections in this rollout. Users under 16 cannot send DMs at all. For 16-18-year-olds, TikTok automatically blocks images with nudity with its built-in detection systems. Adults 18+ can also turn this on to avoid inappropriate content.

Also, TikTok says you cannot send a self-recorded voice note or video as the first message to someone. You can only share content that already exists on TikTok.

While the new features are cool for users, the platform is actually late to the game. WhatsApp introduced voice notes in 2013, and Instagram did it in 2018. TikTok introduced group chats in 2024, so it is slow but steady progress towards becoming a full messaging app. With Gen Z driving the voice note trend, TikTok’s move is timely, even if it is years late.

    FAQs

Q1. Can all TikTok users send voice notes now?

The rollout is happening gradually, so the feature will appear for users worldwide in the coming weeks.

Q2. How long can TikTok voice notes be?

Both voice notes and videos are capped at one minute each.

Q3. Is there an age restriction on TikTok DMs?

Yes, only users aged 16 and above can send direct messages.

  • Open Source Interactive Wallpapers For Windows

Open Source Interactive Wallpapers For Windows

It’s late at night, and you’re avoiding work that was supposed to be done yesterday. You could open an application on your desktop to keep your attention, or what about the desktop itself? [Underpig1] has you covered with Octos. Octos is an open-source application created to allow interactive wallpapers based on HTML, CSS, or JS for Windows 10 and 11.

There are many wallpaper applications made to spruce up your desktop, but Octos stands out to us here at Hackaday from the nature of being open source. What comes along with the project is a detailed API to reference when creating your own wallpaper. Additionally, this allows for detailed and efficient visualization techniques that would otherwise be difficult to display, perfect for procrastination.

Included demos range from an interactive solar system to Conway’s Game of Life. Customization options allow for basic manipulation of the backdrops in the application itself, but we’re sure you could allow for some fun options with enough tinkering.

If you want to try Octos out for yourself, it’s incredibly easy. Octos can be found on the Microsoft Store, and additional backdrops can be added within the application. Open-source applications allow for incredibly easy additions to your personal device, but it’s not always that way. Kindle has been a prime example of a fairly locked down system; however, that never stops a clever hacker!
