Chinese ARPG Lost Soul Aside release met with “mostly negative” reviews on launch day · TechNode

Developed by Shanghai-based UltiZero Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the Chinese ARPG (Action Role-Playing Game) Lost Soul Aside was released on Friday for PS5, PS4, and PC, priced from RMB 268 ($37) in China. Built on Unreal Engine 4 with RTX ray tracing, the game presents an open world blending science fiction and swordplay. Players take control of Kazer, a symbiont protagonist, engaging in fast-paced combos and weapon upgrades to battle alien creatures. Although the game reached a peak of over 3,070 concurrent players on Steam on launch day, technical issues sparked controversy. Some users reported locked frame rates during the opening cinematic, the inability to remap controller buttons, and account-binding failures. Steam’s first-day reviews were rated “mostly negative.” [TechNode reporting]

WhatsApp finds new hacking campaign that targets iPhone, Mac users globally: Read company’s statement

WhatsApp has said that it uncovered a cyberespionage, or hacking, operation that exploited multiple security vulnerabilities across its platform and Apple devices to conduct targeted surveillance of users, with reportedly civil society activists appearing to be among the primary targets. In a statement issued, the Meta-owned company said that it has plugged the loop holes that hackers used to attack specific users.“Incomplete authorization of linked device synchronization messages in WhatsApp for iOS prior to v2.25.21.73, WhatsApp Business for iOS v2.25.21.78, and WhatsApp for Mac v2.25.21.78 could have allowed an unrelated user to trigger processing of content from an arbitrary URL on a target’s device,” WhatsApp said in a statement. The Meta-owned messaging service disclosed the security breach in a brief statement, revealing that hackers had discovered and weaponised a chain of vulnerabilities that allowed them to compromise both the WhatsApp application and Apple devices in coordinated attacks.“We assess that this vulnerability, in combination with an OS-level vulnerability on Apple platforms (CVE-2025-43300), may have been exploited in a sophisticated attack against specific targeted users,” the company added, without revealing much about the cyber attack. However, a report by news agency Reuters said that an estimated 200 users worldwide have potentially been compromised during the espionage campaign.

Amnesty International’s Security Lab says civic organisations may be a target

Donncha O Cearbhaill, who heads Amnesty International’s Security Lab, said that members of civic organisations appear to be among those affected by the surveillance operation. “WhatsApp has just sent out a round of threat notifications to individuals they believe where targeted by an advanced spyware campaign in past 90 days. Seek out expert help if you have received this alert,” he said.“Early indications are that the WhatsApp attack is impacting both iPhone and Android users, civil society individuals among them. Government spyware continues to pose a threat to journalists and human rights defenders,” O Cearbhaill wrote in a post on social media platform X.He noted that the Apple vulnerability was in a core image library, advising people that they should update their devices and enable iOS Lockdown Mode or Android‘s Advanced Protection Mode to help protect against attacks like this.

  • Stories that travel from Brazil to the Moon: RECYCLING & SUSTAINABILITY recap

Stories that travel from Brazil to the Moon: RECYCLING & SUSTAINABILITY recap

The aluminium industry’s sustainability journey in August 2025 has been exciting as ever. From the bustling can recycling networks of Brazil to futuristic waste conversion experiments on the Moon, and from India’s pandal aesthetics to Europe’s policy battles, the past month have shown how recycling and energy transitions are shaping the sector’s long-term narrative.

    Image for representational purposes only

    {alcircleadd}

Brazil: still the world’s recycling poster child

Brazil has long worn the crown as the world’s aluminium can recycling champion. And even though the country saw a slight dip (2.7 per cent down in 2024), its recovery rate still stayed comfortably above 95 per cent. That’s fifteen years of near-perfect performance, showing how deeply recycling is embedded in Brazilian culture. For most countries struggling to cross even half that mark, Brazil’s “slip” looks more like a masterclass in consistency (full story here).

Recycling on the Moon? Yes, NASA is trying It

From beer cans in Brazil to space junk on the Moon: the contrast couldn’t be sharper. NASA is working on ways to recycle mission waste into tools, spare parts, and other essentials that astronauts might need on long lunar stays. The idea is simple: you can’t pack everything from Earth, so why not make the Moon itself a recycling lab? It’s a fascinating step that could change how humans live beyond Earth, while giving us fresh ideas for recycling smarter back home (read more).

    India’s festival twist

Back on Earth, and especially in India’s Steel City of Jamshedpur, aluminium is about to make another festive debut. For the 2025 Durga Puja, organisers are putting up a pandal (a temporary festival structure) built with aluminium instead of traditional materials. Why aluminium? It’s light, strong, and infinitely recyclable. The pandal will not just be a spectacle for devotees but also a statement on how cultural traditions can embrace sustainability without losing their magic (details here).

    Europe builds systems, guards resources

In Germany, recycling got a serious boost with the launch of a flagship bottom ash recycling facility in Magdeburg. The plant will extract valuable metals and minerals from incineration ash — a step toward ensuring that nothing useful ends up wasted (story here).

But Europe has another problem of too much aluminium scrap flowing out to the United States. For stakeholders in Brussels, it is about losing valuable raw material that could have fed local recyclers. Retaliation measures are being discussed, showing how recycling is as much about geopolitics as it is about green goals (read how).

The US looks to be aluminium-rich, but recycling-poor

Across the Atlantic, America has plenty of aluminium but not enough ways to recycle it. Facilities are lagging, creating a strange imbalance: a resource-rich country short on processing power. One proposed fix is the Benson aluminium recycling project (project update), which just wrapped up its public comment period. If approved, it could add much-needed capacity, but the bigger question is whether the U.S. can scale up fast enough to match its growing aluminium appetite (coverage here).

India is balancing between growth vs green energy

India finds itself on a tightrope. On one side, it wants to ramp up aluminium production to fuel infrastructure and export ambitions. On the other, it has strict renewable energy targets that demand cleaner power. Can both goals run in parallel? That’s the million-dollar question policy makers and producers are wrestling with (story here).

The market isn’t making it easier. Imported aluminium scrap prices fell in India even as global prices on the LME ticked higher — a reminder that local and global markets don’t always move in sync (press release).

    China’s fast-track to renewables

China, meanwhile, is pressing the fast-forward button. It has moved up its renewable energy marketisation target by five years, aiming for 30 per cent electrification by 2030. The signal is clear: aluminium production must grow, but it has to be powered more by clean energy than coal (press release).

China’s story connects with a larger industry debate of whether aluminium’s carbon footprint is less about smelting technology and more about the energy grid behind it. If your grid runs on coal, aluminium stays “dirty.” If it runs on renewables, the metal feels like the green champion it’s targeted to be (analysis here).

Put together, these stories show aluminium’s double life, one encapsulating everyday and the other resonating extraordinarily. It’s in Brazilian recycling bins, Indian festival pandals, German ash plants and at the same time, it’s being tested on the Moon. Aluminium’s future scalability depends less on whether we recycle and more on how well each region builds the systems to make recycling and renewable energy work together.

  • Chasm Developer Bit Kid Unveils New Trailer for Sci-Fi WW2 Metroidvania WOLFHOUND

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Maryland, USA – Aug. 29, 2025 – WOLFHOUND, the sci-fi World War II Metroidvania from Chasm developer Bit Kid, takes the fight to Axis abominations in a new trailer revealed at The MIX Fall Games Showcase, ahead of a 2026 release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam for PC and Steam Deck.

When Captain Chuck “WOLFHOUND” Rossetti was ordered to infiltrate an uncharted island, eliminate enemy forces, and rescue the crew of a vessel lost in the Bermuda Triangle, he expected a bloody mess. He just didn’t expect a crash landing, and for things to be so grotesque, thanks to the horrific experiments of the mad Nazi scientist, Dr. Steiner.

Explore the mysterious island, scavenging for weapons and ammo from the forces of the clandestine fortress. Fend off strange creatures debuting in the new trailer, like overgrown mutant rats with bladed tails, a massive armored bodyguard, and pulsating globs of formless flesh.

Make Dr. Steiner regret his decision to create powerful experimental weaponry like a railgun by turning it against his own creations. Scale otherwise un-navigable passageways by finding powerful mobility tech like air-dash boots and a jetpack. Capt. Rosetti will need every advantage he can get, as he realizes he’s the only one who can prevent Nazi world domination.

“The team and I have largely gone heads down since our successful reveal in 2024, but we’re glad to finally show off some of the new bizarre foes you’ll square off with,” said James Petruzzi, founder and lead developer at Bit Kid. “We know our fans have been itching to see more and try it for themselves – stop by the MIX’s event in Seattle tonight and try it for yourself.”

WOLFHOUND will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam for PC and Steam Deck in 2026. For more information, follow Bit Kid on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and join the official Bit Kid Discord server.

  • The Next Snapdragon Elite Chip May Have a Very Confusing Name

The Next Snapdragon Elite Chip May Have a Very Confusing Name

Qualcomm is expected to unveil its next flagship mobile chipset in late September, but new reports suggest the naming may be a confusing mess. While it has been informally referred to as the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, a rumor from China indicates it could launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 instead.

Although “Gen 5” might appear to skip a generation, since the Snapdragon 8 Elite debuted just last year, this label makes somewhat sense, in a roundabout way. The original 8 Elite succeeded the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, making it effectively the fourth-generation chip despite its name. Therefore, the upcoming model would be the fifth, albeit very confusing.

    Multiple High-End Variants

Qualcomm is reportedly planning to introduce another high-end chip this year called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which will sit below the 8 Elite Gen 5 in the lineup. This structure places the 8 Gen 5 above the existing 8s Gen 5, but slightly below the new Elite version in terms of performance and features.

    Early Benchmarks

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has reportedly already been benchmarked in the upcoming OnePlus 15, suggesting that device makers are preparing to adopt the new chipset for their next-generation flagship smartphones.

Qualcomm has not officially confirmed the naming or release details, but more details are expected in the September event.

  • Why do Waymos keep loitering in front of my house?

Why do Waymos keep loitering in front of my house?

When a Waymo pulls up and parks in front of her home on a residential street in West Los Angeles, 10-year-old Morgan rushes to the window.

“The Waymo is home!” she says, calling to her parents, Lisa Delgin and Zach Tucker.

It is by no means the first time a Waymo has come “home” to this particular spot. Last year, a Waymo robotaxi dropped Delgin and Tucker off after a New Year’s Eve party and idled there for several minutes until it took off for the next ride. Since then, Waymos have been parking in that same spot, day after day, sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours.

“It would always come back here, like a beacon,” Delgin said. “Like it knew there was a spot here that it could take.”

As with Uber rideshares and Bird scooters before them, Waymos are the latest tech transportation innovation to start showing up in people’s lives — and they sometimes cause friction with residents in the cities that become their first markets.

But the AI of it all adds a layer of opacity to these interactions. Confused driverless cars seem to make random stops, their mandatory backup sounds are irritating, and it’s unclear whether they are even beholden to traffic laws, human drivers allege. When it comes to parking in neighborhood spots, some residents are annoyed, and some are unsettled by the always-on cameras and sensors. But most just want to know why their homes or blocks seem to have become unofficial Waymo hubs.

“Of all the blocks…” Delgin wonders. Why hers?

Dozens of new driverless Waymo cars on the streets in West Los Angeles.
Photo by Citizen of the Planet / Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Morgan, for her part, is delighted by the Waymo’s return visits, since she sees it as approval of their family by the robot cars. Her parents have been more curious, so they’ve run some informal experiments.

They’ve learned that it’s not just one Waymo taking the spot, since Tucker has documented the license plates of multiple different vehicles. A Waymo will also only select one of two specific parking spots: directly in front of their home or straddling the property line with their neighbors to the south. Delgin has noticed that if both of those two spots are taken, a Waymo coming through will slow down, but not stop or try to park elsewhere on the street, even for open spots directly in front of, behind, or across the street from their home.

The Delgin / Tucker family is not alone in noticing the repeated presence of a parked Waymo in LA, where the robotaxis have operated since November 2024. A resident of the Pico / Fairfax neighborhood, Tal (who preferred to be identified by her first name), said a Waymo often parks on her street, always in front of an apartment building a few doors down. The Verge has observed a Waymo frequently at the same location on a street in Brentwood. Multiple users on Nextdoor have asked fellow neighbors (or complained) about the phenomenon in neighborhoods across LA, including Palms, Playa del Rey, and Westchester.

    1/4

Residents go on Nextdoor and other sites to complain about the loitering Waymos.
    Image: Nextdoor

The practice has also been ongoing in Arizona, where Waymo has operated since 2020. One Scottsdale family says a Waymo often parks around the corner from their home, which is adjacent to a shopping center. In recent months, Reddit users in Phoenix have documented the robotaxis’ frequent spots, while a 2023 AZCentral article first documented the phenomenon. “How do you stop Waymo from storing cars in front of your house between trips?” asks one Reddit thread.

Whether a human or AI drives a taxi, it makes sense that a car would idle for some time before it’s dispatched on its next ride. But what makes Lisa Delgin’s home or the Pico / Fairfax building a safe haven for the robotaxis, with such apparent specificity? Neighbors have their theories: proximity to high-traffic areas, central locations, a lack of parking restrictions, ample curb space. But none of that accounts for the repeated specificity of the parking choice.

And unfortunately, not even Waymo the company necessarily fully knows the answer.

Can a robot catch a break?

Where does a Waymo go on its downtime? The company acknowledges that street parking may be a part of a Waymo’s daily routine. There are parking depots throughout LA where Waymos get charged and cleaned. But when not in use, the company says that the cars park outside the Waymo lots, too.

“Our vehicles will find appropriate parking spots to wait for short periods between trips, either in Waymo’s parking facilities or on-street parking locations,” Vishay Nihalani, Waymo’s director of product management, said in a statement. Waymo is even participating in a forthcoming study from UC Berkeley and UC Irvine analyzing street parking behavior, and its impact on ride wait times and curb and road congestion, by providing researchers with aggregate / hypothetical data.

Waymo street parking behavior differs from a cab or other rideshare vehicle. After the morning rush, Uber driver / actor Josh Myra heads home, which is naturally where he parks his car when he’s not taking rides. Otherwise, Myra does not make a practice of parking in residential neighborhoods between rides. When he’s not working, he’s parked at home. And if he is looking for rides, he will usually drive around high-traffic areas, a practice known as “deadheading,” since he gets far more ride requests when he’s in motion versus when he’s stopped. Myra said this is typical of most of the Uber drivers he knows.

But if a Waymo isn’t at a depot, or doesn’t need to head to a depot for a charge or service, it’s not necessarily going to act like an Uber driver and chase rides. If Waymo isn’t seeing a high amount of traffic for ride requests, it may choose to park to conserve energy and avoid contributing to traffic, while also ensuring there’s some Waymo coverage in non-high-traffic zones.

“When Waymo vehicles are idle and don’t have charging or maintenance needs, they choose between parking in nearby spots or driving to areas of high demand,” Nihalani said. The Waymos opt to drive to these “high-demand” areas when “they’re likely to quickly receive the next hail.” If high-demand areas have an adequate number of Waymos nearby, the cars may choose to park. “This allows us to best match ride-hailing demand and vehicle supply, while conserving energy and reducing traffic congestion,” Nihalani said.

As for where to pull over, there are a few things that definitively go into Waymo’s parking choices. First is “local parking regulations,” so that includes the actual curb restrictions such as time limits or street sweeping. Next is “the number of our vehicles that are parked in a given area.” If there are already Waymo vehicles servicing that neighborhood, the individual Waymo is likely to move on. And finally, “how long they remain parked.” If they tend to hang out there for long periods of time, that could mean a Waymo might not park in that neighborhood (or spot) in the future, since it indicates there’s not much demand in that area.

The decision to park or head to a depot or a high-traffic zone appears to be a balancing act. If a neighborhood doesn’t have another Waymo nearby, and high-traffic areas are saturated with Waymos, parking in a place with minimal curb restrictions might be the best choice. The curb traffic study supports this: UC Irvine lead researcher on the curb study Michael Hyland said data showed that street parking reduces wait times and road congestion. Although it does, obviously, take up more parking spots.

While Waymo provides general insight into its parking choices, it does not address the specificity of the places its vehicles choose to stop — in front of the same house or apartment building, over and over again.

Waymo acknowledges the specific repeat parking phenomenon, but says that the cars’ AI is making so many dynamic decisions in driving as well as parking — about safety, accessibility, and congestion — that it can’t say why a Waymo selects a spot for idling or parking.

Neither the repetition nor the lack of clarity around the behavior shock Phil Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon professor and autonomous vehicle expert. “A computer just doing exactly the same thing the same way every time should not be a surprise to anyone,” Koopman said. “That’s how computers are.” Essentially, they’re smart enough to find an absolutely optimized parking spot — but not necessarily elastic enough in this instance to choose a nearby spot if the optimal spot is not available, the way a human would.

As for how the computers are arriving at that result, Koopman has another theory. Waymo saying that only the car’s computer really knows why it does what it does leads him to believe that Waymo is using machine learning to direct its curb parking decisions. Machine learning means that Waymo engineers provide the cars with data that allows them to make their own decisions based on that data, rather than provide specific instructions via a human-written algorithm.

“Machine learning looks at statistical information and comes up with an answer, and nobody has any idea how it got there,” Koopman said. “And it seems that they are currently not optimizing to vary the location for whatever reason.”

Waymo does not confirm or deny its use of machine learning, instead saying “several elements go into the vehicles’ determination of where to park,” according to Nihalani.

Koopman says that while Waymo may not have insight into how the cars are arriving at their parking choices, they absolutely understand what it’s basing those decisions on. “They don’t know why it made the decision, but they know what data they’re feeding it,” Koopman said. Where it’s legal to park is certainly in this data, but one Reddit user suspects that Waymos have “designated safe spots” — a suspicion that Koopman shares. However, Waymo does not confirm the existence of such designations, and only says that it prohibits parking in certain places.

Tal, the Pico / Fairfax resident, feels slightly uncomfortable about the constant presence of the Waymo with its always-on cameras; Redditors have expressed similar sentiments. Delgin and Tucker have been mostly amused, though sometimes annoyed by the car taking up a spot. Once, while about to head out on an errand, Delgin even made a quick U-turn back into her street spot when she saw a Waymo coming to block it. This sort of moderate annoyance is the overwhelming sentiment on forums where people raise the issue, too.

Some residents have taken their complaints directly to Waymo, the company says. The thing is, Waymo is not technically doing anything wrong, as long as parking doesn’t exceed three hours. Regarding parking regulations governing Waymo parking, Los Angeles Department of Transportation spokesperson Colin Sweeney cites Los Angeles Municipal Code 80.69.2(b), which says that commercial passenger vehicles under 22 feet must follow the same parking regulations that personal vehicles do, and that they can’t park in the same spot for over three hours.

Neither Tal nor Delgin is sure whether Waymo has overstayed this time limit. But researcher Hyland says that, according to the aggregate / hypothetical data, very rarely did any rideshare vehicle park for more than two hours.

Waymo can, and has, told its vehicles to steer clear of certain spots. Waymo confirmed that it is technically possible to mark a spot as a no-parking zone for Waymo vehicles, which it has done in response to neighbor complaints. The police departments of Los Angeles and Phoenix weren’t able to say whether they had gotten any general “loitering” complaints, as these types of information requests require that inquiries be pinpointed to specific locations.

“We are committed to being good neighbors in the communities we operate in,” Nihalani said. “We have received a few pieces of feedback from neighbors, and have made adjustments accordingly.”

Being a “good neighbor” is all well and good, but not providing clarity into the specific parking behavior could indicate larger problems if it is also using machine learning for other functions.

“[Parking] is not high stakes,” Koopman said. “But companies like to use, ‘Well, the computer just did what it did, we don’t know,’ as an excuse for shirking accountability for decisions that might be somewhat harmful.”

Lately, the Delgin / Tucker family’s Waymo has been around less. Waymo confirms that, while usage fluctuates, it has seen a significant uptick in recent months. So chances to stop and take a breather for the robotaxis might be fewer and farther between as the supply of Waymo’s 500-strong Los Angeles fleet begins to meet Angelenos’ demand. Lisa Delgin just hopes, in the future, a Waymo will be around when she needs it.

Buy an iPhone 16 or Wait for the iPhone 17? Here’s How the Phones Might Compare

If you’re looking to buy a new iPhone right now, you have two main choices: Buy an iPhone 16 right now or wait a little longer and get the iPhone 17, which is expected to debut during Apple’s Sept. 9 event. What’s the better route?

With the anticipated launch of the iPhone 17 just weeks away, it could be a good idea to hang tight and either buy the new phone or get the iPhone 16 at a discounted price. Apple still hasn’t confirmed the existence of the iPhone 17, and we don’t have any official specs or features, but here’s how it could compare to the iPhone 16, according to rumors and speculation.

iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 17: Key rumored specs compared

We still don’t have any confirmed details about the iPhone 17, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning and purported leaks from making the rounds. Speculation extends across the entire iPhone 17 lineup, from the Pro models to what could be a thinner “Air” version (which may be Apple’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge). But I’m going to focus on the baseline iPhone 17.

    Screen differences

One of the most highly anticipated changes could be that the iPhone 17 adds a 120Hz display, which would be very welcome. Currently, only the iPhone Pro models have that higher refresh rate, while the baseline and Plus models are stuck with a 60Hz display. Bumping that refresh rate could also prompt Apple to bring the always-on display to the baseline model, making it easier to quickly glance at the time and your notifications without waking your display.

There’s been some back-and-forth on whether the iPhone 17 will have a scratch-resistant, antireflective display. But the most recent reports suggest that the feature will only be available on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, not the baseline iPhone 17 (or the Air). So there may not be major discrepancies between the iPhone 16 and 17 on that front.

    Camera differences

It’s possible the iPhone 17’s selfie camera will get a bump to 24 megapixels, instead of the current 12 megapixels found in the iPhone 16’s front-facing shooter. Megapixels aren’t the only determining factor for good-quality photos but if it is an upgrade, that could make taking selfies or shooting videos for social media on the front-facing camera less of a compromise.

There’s also been some conversation about the camera bump on Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup. It’s likely that only the Pro models’ cameras will be nestled in a new, larger panel that stretches horizontally across the back of the phone (perhaps evoking the “Geordi Visor” on the Google Pixel 9) and that the baseline will maintain a similar camera arrangement to the iPhone 16. Only time will tell.

    Design differences

Rumors suggest that like the iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 will have an aluminum frame. (In fact, it’s possible that’ll be the case for the entire lineup, apart from the iPhone 17 Air, which could have a titanium frame to make it lighter.)

There have also been reports that the iPhone 17 will use a new compact “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor, which could reduce the size of the Face ID sensor and the Dynamic Island. That could give slightly more real estate to the top of the 17’s display.

    Processor and RAM

One key element that could remain unchanged across both phones is the processor. The iPhone 17 is rumored to pack an A18 chip, just like the iPhone 16.

With Apple’s plans to expand its Apple Intelligence suite of AI capabilities, it’s possible the iPhone 17 lineup could come with 12GB of RAM instead of the current 8GB — or at least part of it could.

In April, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models would sport 12GB of RAM but that Apple was still deciding whether to equip the baseline model with that higher amount too. In May, analyst Jeff Pu noted the baseline would remain at 8GB. We’ll have to wait to see what Apple ultimately decides.

Speaking of Apple Intelligence, a new AI-powered Adaptive Power feature arriving with iOS 26 can help conserve the battery by making “small performance adjustments,” like “allowing some activities to take a little longer,” according to Apple. The next iPhone is expected to arrive with the upcoming operating system onboard but you’ll also be able to download iOS 26 on the iPhone 16, as well as some older iPhones, once it becomes available publicly. That should help to stretch your battery life on either device.

    Color options

What’s on the inside may be most important but people also want to know what fun colors the iPhone 17 could sport. Rumors suggest the upcoming device could come in black, blue, silver, purple and green.

For comparison, the iPhone 16 is available in black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine.

Everything we think we know about the iPhone 17 is still just speculation so we’ll have to see what Apple unveils this fall.

Should you buy an iPhone 16 now or wait for the iPhone 17?

If you’re in desperate need of a new phone and can’t wait any longer, who am I to stop you? But if you can hang tight until Sept. 9, when Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17, you can either score the flashy new device or get a discount on the iPhone 16. (In previous years, the company dropped the price on older models by about $100.)

It’s likely the changes between the iPhone 16 and 17 will be relatively modest. Apple tends to debut newer features on its Pro models before eventually rolling them out across the full lineup, like it did with the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. So any shiny new capabilities will likely land on its more premium phones first, such as the rumored antireflective display and redesigned cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro models.

But perhaps the biggest changes could arrive next year with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, for which Apple is reportedly “preparing a major shake-up” of the phone’s design, according to Bloomberg. That includes a (long-rumored) foldable version and a “bold new Pro model that makes more extensive use of glass.” The iPhone 17 may not even be announced yet, but it’s never too early to be looking even further ahead.
