Football headers trigger motor control changes in women

A new study reveals that while routine heading in women’s football doesn’t affect balance, it subtly alters fine motor function, raising questions about the game’s neurological toll.

Women exposed to various header shots in a typical football match may not experience gross motor control impairment, but rather subtle, acute changes in motor-cognitive functions. A recent Frontiers in Sports and Active Living study evaluates the effects of football heading on gross and fine motor control among women footballers.

What are the risks associated with heading in a football match?

In football, also known as soccer, heading is a relatively common and essential shot contributing to approximately 32.5% of contestable goals scored at the 2022 Women’s World Cup. The average impact forces experienced by a player during heading are below established thresholds for brain injury.

Previous studies have revealed that repeated head injuries could increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases; however, more research is required to establish causality. In one instance, after a “standard” bout of football heading, a player exhibited immediate and measurable adverse effects, such as increased corticomotor inhibition and reduced memory function. Therefore, it is essential to comprehend both the immediate and long-term effects of sport-related head impacts on brain function.

Motor control assessments evaluate an individual’s capacity to regulate and coordinate movements to achieve a specific task. Scientists have used this approach to assess the neurological changes following head impacts. Gross motor control is evaluated based on the form of standing balance. This assessment is based on the principle that standing balance relies on a complex interplay of mechanisms, including cortical and subcortical pathways.

Previous studies have presented contradictory results on the association between football heading and standing balance. For instance, some studies have shown impaired standing balance following heading, while others have recorded no significant changes. In comparison to male athletes, MRI analysis has shown that female athletes are more prone to undergo negative changes in white matter microstructure following football heading. As a result, researchers are more interested in understanding the effects of football heading on the brain function of female athletes.

Fine motor skills are used to assess brain function following heading. Individuals without a history of concussion perform significantly better in precision grip tasks than those who have previously experienced a concussion. Amidst the contradictory results, it is essential to determine whether heading influences the cognitive functions of female footballers.

    About the study

Nineteen female football players, including ten defenders, five midfielders, and four forwards, were initially recruited from the University of Exeter Football team. The average age of the participants was 21, with approximately 11 years of playing experience. These participants were screened according to the eligibility criteria.

After familiarizing the participants with testing protocols, they were invited to the laboratory for data collection associated with a heading protocol or a control condition, which was performed in a counterbalanced order. The heading protocol was developed to replicate the match-play heading frequency, i.e., participants heading an official size 5 UEFA Women’s Champions League football, launched six times every hour by a motorized ball launcher positioned 15 meters away. Considering previous literature recommendations, a ball velocity of 40 ± 5 km/h was selected to reflect match play heading intensity.

During the control condition, participants were asked to remain seated and rest for one hour. After completing the heading protocol or the control condition, they underwent cardiovascular assessments, followed by the balance and grip force tasks.

Participants completed the precision finger grip test (PFG) in the full vision (FV) and non-vision (NV) trials. All participants completed one FV, followed by two NV trials. The balance task required participants to stand in a double-leg stance with their hands on their hips, and data were collected under two conditions: eyes open and eyes closed.

    Study findings

The current study observed that the heading intervention induced a statistically significant decrease in oscillations in force production (OFP) tremor frequency in the 0-4 Hz band for the NV PFG (p = 0.03), while the control condition resulted in an increase in OFP in the 0-4 Hz band.

Following the heading intervention, no significant change in gross motor control regarding standing balance was observed. A higher value in the balance test centre of Pressure (CoP) sway velocity, and the range of motion (ROM) in the mediolateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) directions resulted in the eyes-closed condition for both intervention and control conditions.

In contrast to the control condition, a significant difference in tremor frequency of precision grip was observed after the heading protocol. This medium effect size (Cohen’s d = -0.53) suggests an altered motor control strategy.

    Conclusions and future outlook

The current study indicated that a realistic number of headers at a standard ball speed in women’s football games did not exhibit any change in gross motor control. However, as per a precision gripping task, heading might have induced a change in fine motor control. These studies should also account for whether observed changes are due to heading itself or confounded by exercise-related fatigue or effort.

In the future, more research must be conducted to evaluate the effect of a wider range of realistic ball velocities, beyond ~40 km/h, on acute neurological and physiological function in women’s football. Furthermore, longitudinal studies must be conducted to assess the effect of heading on fine motor control. Scientists should consider brain imaging and electrophysiological measures to uncover the mechanisms underlying changes in fine motor control performance after heading a ball. The authors also noted that the absence of neuroimaging in the current study limits the ability to determine which brain regions may be responsible for observed motor changes.

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 7 launching in 6 days, everything we know so far

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 7 launching in 6 days, everything we know so far

We’re just days away from Samsung’s next big Galaxy Unpacked event, which is scheduled for July 9 in New York. And while the company hasn’t confirmed anything officially, leaks and rumours have already given us a pretty clear picture of what’s coming. At the centre of the launch will be the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 — Samsung’s latest additions to its foldable line-up. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen everything from official-looking renders to live images of the devices, and even some accidental accessory listings. From what it looks like, this year’s foldables are all about refinement.

Let’s start with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Just recently, live images of the phone surfaced online, showing off the new blue colour variant — likely called Blue Shadow. This is the same deep shade we saw earlier in leaked renders, and now it seems to be the hero colour for the device. The photos also confirm that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is slimmer than its predecessor. While we don’t have the exact numbers from these images, previous reports have said the phone could be just 3.9mm to 4.5mm thick when unfolded — easily the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet.

Another detail worth noting is the camera setup. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 appears to have a triple rear camera system stacked vertically, placed on a slightly raised island. What’s changing, though, is the front camera approach. Samsung seems to be ditching the under-display selfie camera used in the Fold 6, and going back to regular hole-punch cameras on both the cover and inner screens.

As for specs, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to pack a 6.5-inch cover and an 8.2-inch inner AMOLED display, respectively. It’ll reportedly be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, paired with at least 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. There are also rumours of a 200-megapixel primary sensor, possibly borrowed from the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Now, coming to the Galaxy Z Flip 7 — this one’s also leaked in renders and is expected to get its share of upgrades. The design looks slimmer compared to the Flip 6, and it may even come in the same Jet Black and Blue Shadow colour options as the Fold. The most noticeable change could be the larger outer display, which is rumoured to grow from 3.4 inches to around 4 inches. Internally, the phone might be powered by either the Snapdragon 8 Elite or an Exynos 2500 chip, depending on the region.

And then there’s the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE — Samsung’s first Fan Edition foldable. A recent leak via a case manufacturer accidentally confirmed the name, and while there are no images just yet, reports suggest it’ll be a more affordable version of the Flip, possibly powered by the Exynos 2400e.

Samsung is also expected to announce the Galaxy Watch 8 series during the event, including a standard Watch 8, a Watch 8 Classic and a Watch Ultra 2. The full picture will be clear on July 9 — but for now, the leaks have definitely kept things exciting.

Land Rover Defender Octa Black Edition Revealed; On The Cards For India?

Just days after revealing the Range Rover Sport SV Black Edition, Land Rover has now unleashed the Defender Octa Black Edition. As the name suggests, the Octa Black Edition is also devoid of any shiny elements on the exterior and interior. It won’t be farfetched to see the Octa Black Edition coming to India later this year or early next year.

The Octa Black Edition gets a Narvik Black exterior and blacked-out accents in multiple shades.

The Defender Octa Black Edition gets a Narvik Black exterior colour. While the exterior accents, like front and rear scruff plates, are finished in Satin Black, the exhaust tips and more accents are finished in Gloss Black. Even the wheels, which can be either optioned to be 20 inches or 22 inches in size, are finished in Gloss Black. The standard Defender Octa also gets two new colours – Sargasso Blue and Borasco Grey.

    Land_Rover_Defender_Octa_Black_Edition_3_acbc034c72.webp
It still has the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with mild hybrid assist.

Just like the exterior, the interior also has the full dark treatment. The seats and dashboard have black leather upholstery. The accents on the dashboard have a Satin Black finish as standard,  but can be optioned to have a Chopped Carbon Fibre finish.

    Land_Rover_Defender_Octa_Black_Edition_5_4927ff902b.webp
Even the interior gets a full blacked-out finish.

Powering the Defender Octa Black Edition is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 626 bhp, 750 Nm and mild hybrid assist. There’s a dedicated Octa Mode for performance off-road use and 6D dynamic suspension for better handling off-road.

    Land_Rover_Defender_Octa_Black_Edition_2_f6bda3765e.webp
It’s likely the Defender Octa Black Edition will come to India later this year.

While there’s no confirmation of the Defender Octa Black Edition coming to India, expect it to come to our market sometime later this year or early next year. JLR brings almost every model to India, and the Octa’s new edition won’t be different.

  • New Leaks Hint at Major Upgrade in ChatGPT-5 – Here’s What’s Coming

New Leaks Hint at Major Upgrade in ChatGPT-5 – Here’s What’s Coming

ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used AI assistants. It has really made our lives easier; we give commands and it completes the task for us. OpenAI has introduced many new features, keeping in mind the needs of the users. Now, some new leaks suggest that OpenAI might add an Operator-like tool to ChatGPT. This could happen soon, maybe with the launch of GPT-5. We can say that ChatGPT-5 may come with a major upgrade.

A developer named Tibor spotted some clues. He found new code strings in the ChatGPT web app and Android beta. These include words like “click,” “drag,” “type,” and even “terminal feed.” These hints suggest that ChatGPT may soon be able to control a remote browser or operate in a safe, sandboxed environment.

New Leaks Hint at Major Upgrade in ChatGPT-5 – Here’s What’s Coming

For those who don’t know, OpenAI already has a tool called Operator. It lets an AI agent run tasks in a remote browser for the user. So, instead of just chatting, the AI can take actions online by itself.

The new code shows more hints. There are references to “Checking available APIs” and “Reading API documentation.” This means the AI might soon read docs and call APIs on its own to get things done.

There is also mention of an “intake form.” This could mean OpenAI will first test this tool with a small group. So, it might be an invite-only beta at first, before more people get it.

People are now wondering: will this be part of ChatGPT-5? Or maybe some other model? Right now, there is no clear answer. OpenAI has not made an official announcement.

Also, OpenAI is busy these days with its clash with Meta. So, it might take time before we see this new feature for everyone.

Still, the idea is exciting. If ChatGPT can run tasks online, it could do much more than just talk. It could help with real actions on websites or software, saving people time and effort.

Let’s wait and see what OpenAI does next. One thing is clear — the AI assistant is getting smarter and more useful with every update.

  • Introducing The Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance Ice Blue

Introducing The Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance Ice Blue

Since the debut of the Mirrored Force Resonance First Edition in 2022, which was an update of the revolutionary 2016 Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance, the brand has excited us with the Manufacture Editions in green and blue, and now introduces the Mirrored Force Resonance Ice Blue. This fresh interpretation combines the technical mastery of its predecessors with a dial that truly catches the eye and has a very soothing effect.

As we’re here talking about a new edition of a well-known watch, we’re not going to remake the entire technical explanation, as groundbreaking as it can be. However, if you want to understand how Armin Strom managed to create a watch truly capable of using the benefits of the resonance phenomenon, I invite you to take a look at one of these two videos, here and here. Believe me when I say that it’s absolutely fascinating.

Now on to the new Mirrored Force Resonance Ice Blue. The familiar 43mm stainless steel case measures 11.55mm in thickness and features a comfortable lug-to-lug length of 49.60mm, striking a nice balance between presence and wrist-friendliness. The case’s polished surfaces complement the anti-reflective sapphire crystals front and back, offering an unobstructed view of the watch’s remarkable movement and its resonance mechanism in action. Water resistance is a modest but practical 30m.

The Ice Blue dial features a sunray guilloché pattern to adorn the off-centred time display, a decoration introduced for the first time in the Mirrored Force Resonance line. This icy blue dial plays beautifully with light, catching and reflecting it in dynamic ways. The black circular satin-brushed chapter ring grounds the design, while polished and facetted rhodium-plated indices and hands, crafted in-house, provide a sharp contrast for excellent legibility.

The dial’s left side displays the brand’s signature resonance mechanism: two balances oscillating in opposite directions, linked by Armin Strom’s patented resonance clutch spring. Two seconds counters add symmetry and provide a visual confirmation of the precise synchronisation that defines resonance technology, with the pusher at 2 o’clock used to synchronise them in case it’s needed.

The watch is powered by the Manufacture Calibre ARF21, a hand-wound movement with two independent regulating systems, connected via the clutch spring, that significantly improve chronometric stability and precision. The movement operates at a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour, offers a 48-hour power reserve, and is meticulously finished with traditional haute horlogerie techniques, including polished bevels, Geneva stripes, perlage, and black-polished screws, which are visible through the sapphire caseback.

The watch is worn on a dark blue Alcantara strap with white stitching, adding a sporty, elegant touch, and is closed with a classic stainless steel pin buckle. Limited to 15 pieces, the Mirrored Force Resonance Ice Blue is priced at CHF 78,000. For more information, please consult arminstrom.com.

  • EA to sunset Anthem in January 2026

EA to sunset Anthem in January 2026

Electronic Arts has announced it will sunset Anthem on January 12, 2026.

In a statement on its website, EA said the game will still be playable online until this date. Players can no longer purchase in-game currency, but can use their remaining balance until Anthem’s servers go offline.

If players have previously purchased Anthem, it will remain downloadable and playable up to the announced cut off date. The game will be removed from the EA Play playlist on August 15, 2025.

EA did not provide a reason for shutting Anthem down, but clarified that the decision had not led to any layoffs.

Anthem launched in February 2019 and had a rocky start. EA forecast six million sales for Anthem in its first six weeks, though the game did not affect the developer’s Q4 2019 financials which saw double-digit decreases in revenue and net income.

In response to the game’s troubled release, CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged that it “may not have had the start that many of us wanted”.

“IP lives for generations, and runs in these seven to ten year cycles,” said Wilson. “So, if I think about Anthem on a seven to ten year cycle, it may not have had the start many of us wanted, including our players.

“I feel like that team is really going to get there with something special and something great, because they’ve demonstrated that they can.”
