    IISc researchers develop simple paper-based sensor to detect liver cancer

    Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed a unique luminescent probe that uses terbium, a rare earth metal, to sense the presence of an enzyme called β-glucuronidase, which can potentially aid in the detection of liver cancer.

    According to IISc, β-glucuronidase is an evolutionarily conserved enzyme found across life forms – from microbes to plants and animals. Its core function is to break down a sugar acid called glucuronic acid.

    “Beyond its biological omnipresence, the enzyme also doubles as a critical biomarker for liver cancer. In fact, an upsurge in β-glucuronidase often accompanies colon, breast, and renal cancers, as well as infections of the urinary tract and AIDS,” IISc said.

    Conventional methods

    “Conventional methods of colorimetry and fluorescence for detecting such enzymes are often restricted by sensitivity or interference from background signals. The ability of rare earth metals to have long-lived excited states allows us to filter out short-lived background fluorescence, resulting in a much clearer signal,” said Ananya Biswas, former PhD student at IISc and co-first author of the paper published in Chemistry.

    The roots of the project trace back nearly a decade, beginning with the team’s experiments on metal ions and their gel-forming properties. The team found that terbium ions couched in a gel matrix derived from bile salts can emit green fluorescence.

    Within the same gel matrix, the team added an organic molecule called 2,3-DHN (2,3-Dihydroxynaphthalene) “masked” with glucuronic acid. When β-glucuronidase slices this modified molecule, 2,3-DHN gets released. The researchers then shined UV light on the sample.

    “The free 2,3-DHN acts as an ‘antenna’ – absorbing UV light and transferring the energy to the terbium ions nearby, greatly enhancing their green emission. The gel matrix ensures sufficient proximity between the ‘antenna’ and terbium ions, facilitating efficient energy transfer,” said Uday Maitra, honorary professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry, IISc, and corresponding author of the study.

    Ease of application

    For ease of application, the team designed this assay as a simple paper-based sensor by anchoring the gel matrix onto a paper disc. When β-glucuronidase pre-treated with modified 2,3-DHN is added, the disc exhibits a much stronger green glow under UV light.

    IISc said that the uniqueness of this technique is the analysis. “Unlike conventional high-end fluorescence detection systems, these sensors can be analysed using a UV lamp and ImageJ, an open source, freely accessible software, making this technique ideal for resource-limited settings,” it said.

    Google expands access to AI tools in the classroom for educators with Gemini

    Google LLC today announced a vastly expanded suite of artificial intelligence tools for educators with Gemini in the Classroom, which includes more than 30 features to help teachers spend more time with students.

    The new features build on personalized learning experiences for educators and students Google unveiled earlier this year and are now free for educators.

    Google Classroom is a free, web-based platform designed to assist educators in managing, creating and organizing assignments, communicating with students, and providing feedback. It’s designed to aid teachers with opportunities in the digital environment by providing them access to Google’s ecosystem such as Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet.

    For students, it allows them to easily access class materials, submit work online, communicate with their teachers about assignments and collaborate with classmates on projects.

    Introducing Gemini for Education

    Google has launched a new educational version of the Gemini app called Gemini for Education.

    The app is based on LearnLM, a powerful tool built on Gemini 2.5 Pro model, the company’s flagship AI model. It’s grounded in learning science, which Google says makes it elemental for learning and providing guidance instead of simply giving away answers.

    The app is also designed with safeguards, administrator control and visibility alongside enterprise-grade data protection and regulatory compliance with educational standards.

    Additionally, since Google launched Gems in the Gemini app, educators have been able to generate their own AI experts. Gems are a type of customized version of the Gemini chatbot, optimized for specific tasks. Educators can task a Gem to become an “interactive simulation” grounded in course materials and readings to engage students or base it on curricula to make it respond accordingly.

    NotebookLM, Google’s AI-powered note-taking and research assistant tool, designed to help users make sense of vast bodies of documents and powered by Gemini for students over 18, now has Video Overviews. This allows educators to easily take copious amounts of coursework and other sources and turn them into educational videos.

    Also in the vein of videos, Google Vids is now available to all Google Workspace for Education users.

    The company said it intends to launch a new version of NotebookLM in the coming weeks designed for students under age 18. In the upcoming version, Gemini will be able to provide visuals, such as interactive diagrams in its responses to help students understand complex concepts more easily.

    Google said in the coming months educators will be able to assign Gems and notebooks grounded in class materials directly to students through Google Classroom through new teacher-led experiences. With the safe, responsible use of AI tools, students will have the agency to choose how to learn in the ways that work best for them.

    Linear structure gives dysprosium complex record-breaking magnetic properties | Research

    A new dysprosium complex retains magnetic memory at 100K, the highest temperature recorded for this class of compound. The researchers behind the work attribute the material’s properties to its unusual linear structure, and suggest that such complexes could drastically reduce the space required to store large amounts of information in modern data centres.

    Single-molecule magnets can reduce the physical size of storage systems by increasing data density. But once they have been magnetised by an external magnetic field, these compounds generally need to be kept under extremely cold temperatures to prevent magnetic memory loss, limiting their everyday potential. One factor that has capped these compounds’ working temperatures to around 80K is the bent arrangement of bonds around their dysprosium atoms, which aids magnetic relaxation and loss of information.

    A crystal structure of the dysprosium complex

    Now, researchers at the University of Manchester in the UK have synthesised a dysprosium complex in which the bonding around the central dysprosium atom takes on a more linear structure. An alkene incorporated into the ligand backbone helps pull the two dysprosium–nitrogen bonds into a straighter arrangement. This configuration increases the portion of angular momentum aligning with the principal axis, elevating overall magnetism of the compound. The linear motif also helps to slow magnetic relaxation, allowing the compound to remain magnetised up to 100K.

    The researchers point out that because the magnet works at temperatures above that of liquid nitrogen (77K), its use could now be feasible in large data centres. The team now plans hopes to find even better single-molecule magnets by exploring complexes with even wider angles and more charge dense ligands.

    Samsung is seeding the third One UI 8 version update to beta users in the UK, India, Germany and South Korea. The US and Poland are expected to get the latest software update sometime today.

    The update itself is 1.2GB in size and comes with several bug fixes. For instance, an overlap between the status bar of the recent apps and the running app has been fixed, along with an unwanted keyboard input that occurs when rebooting on the Security Folder PIN input screen. There was also a text input error when using the swipe gesture, which has been addressed.

    The long wait time when entering the Mode/Routine menu has been reduced. Galaxy S25 Ultra users will no longer get an error when inputting text using the S Pen.

    The changelog mentions other software optimizations and performance improvements.

    If the initial rumors are true, Samsung will roll out One UI 8 sooner this year alongside the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, which would make this third iteration of the software the final beta release.

    This isn’t officially confirmed by Samsung, so Galaxy users might have to wait longer for One UI 8.

    New Intel Core Ultra 9 (Series 2)-based workstations span a variety of form factors —suitable for desktops, or for mounting in racks, under desks, or behind monitors


    Lenovo has refreshed its ThinkStation P2 and P3 desktop workstation lineup with four new ‘Gen 2’ models featuring Intel Core Ultra 9 (Series 2) processors and, coming later this year, Nvidia RTX Pro Blackwell GPUs.

    The mainstream ISV-certified workstations span a variety of form factors, including compact towers (ThinkStation P2 Tower Gen 2 and ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2), small form factor (ThinkStation P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2), and micro (ThinkStation P3 Tiny Gen 2).

    The ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2 is the most expandable of the new models and is fully ‘AI-ready’. It features an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor (Series 2) with integrated NPU and, by Q3 2025, will offer up to an Nvidia RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Max-Q Workstation Edition GPU with 96 GB of GDDR7 memory, capable of delivering up to 3,511 TOPS.

    With up to 192 GB of high-speed DDR5 6400 MT/s memory, the P3 Tower Gen 2 offers more RAM than its predecessor, along with expanded storage with ‘enhanced RAID flexibility’.

    The ThinkStation P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2 features a space-saving 3.9L form factor, significantly smaller than a traditional mini tower and compact enough to mount under a desk using a dedicated ThinkStation cradle.

    It’s also datacenter-ready, making it a key component of Lenovo Access, a new remote workstation solution. Up to seven workstations can fit in a 5U rack, and each one can be configured with a ThinkStation Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) for out-of-band system management.

    The ThinkStation P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2 supports Intel Core Ultra 9 processors (Series 2), up to 128 GB of DDR5 6400 MT/s memory, and up to an Nvidia RTX 4000 SFF Ada Generation GPU with 20 GB of GDDR6 memory. It also offers more M.2 SSDs than the previous generation.

    The ThinkStation P3 Tiny Gen 2 features a super-compact 1-litre design — 96% smaller than a traditional desktop — and can be mounted behind a monitor or under a desk.

    Due to its diminutive size, it’s likely to support lower powered Intel Core Ultra 9 processors (Series 2), and GPU options are limited to the Nvidia RTX A1000 (8 GB). Even so, it should still deliver solid performance for CAD and BIM-centric workflows, as shown in our recent review of the A1000.

    Memory also gets a boost — now up to 128 GB at 6400 MT/s, compared to 96 GB DDR5-5600 in its predecessor — and it also supports more M.2 SSDs.

    Finally, the ThinkStation P2 Tower Gen 2 is billed as Lenovo’s smallest workstation tower at 17 litres. It features the same Intel Core Ultra 9 processor options as the P3 Tower Gen 2, but with more limited expandability and graphics topping out at the Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada Generation (16 GB). This makes it well-suited to CAD/BIM and entry-level visualisation workloads.

    The ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2 is available now. The ThinkStation P2 Tower Gen 2, P3 Tiny Gen 2, and P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2 will be available later this month.
