Vietnam: Rescuers search for survivors after Halong Bay tourist boat capsizes killing dozens in Vietnam

    CNN
     —

Divers are still searching for missing passengers and crew after a sightseeing ship capsized in a squall in Halong Bay, a popular tourist destination in Vietnam, on Saturday. At least 34 bodies have been recovered and another 11 people have been rescued.

Search and rescue efforts are underway for those who are still missing, according to VN Express, which reported that the vessel was carrying 53 people, including 48 tourists and five crew members. The nationalities of those on board have not yet been stated.

In an interview with state media outlet Vietnamnet, a 64-year-old diver at the scene said that much of the ship’s passenger area had been searched. The cockpit and engine room, however, are stuck in mud, making them harder to reach.

“As of now, I am certain there are no more bodies in the passenger cabin,” said diver Đinh Khắc Giông. “I only worry that some bodies may have drifted outside.”

VN Express reported that the ship, called the Wonder Sea, was caught in a storm around 1.30 p.m. local time (2.30 a.m. ET), which caused it to capsize. It then lost GPS signal, according to the outlet, which cited the Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Committee.

The navy, border guards, police and port authorities – along with 27 boats and two rescue craft – were mobilized to the scene, VN Express reported, adding that heavy rain and limited visibility due to nightfall were making rescue operations difficult.

Most of the passengers were from the Vietnamese capital Hanoi and traveling as families, according to VN Express, which reported the eldest passenger as 53 years old and the youngest as just 3.

Over 20 children were on board, VN Express said. Citing the director of a local hospital, the outlet reported that a 10-year-old boy is in stable condition after suffering multiple injuries.

It also reported a 14-year-old boy survived after being trapped inside the ship’s sunken cabin for four hours, citing eyewitness and deputy head of the Ha Long Cruise Ship Association, Bui Cong Hoan.

State broadcaster VTV interviewed a survivor, Dang Thuy Linh, recovering at the provincial hospital.

“I have lost contact with my son, my husband and my friend’s whole family,” Dang told VTV, according to a translation published by Reuters.

“What I am asking now is for everyone to speed up the rescue mission, to save all of them,” Dang added. “Please don’t let anyone behind on that boat. There is so little air left, there is a small chance of surviving.”

The capsize reportedly happened near the Dau Go Cave – one of the largest in the bay.

Halong Bay is a popular tourist hotspot and a UNESCO world heritage site comprising of about 1,600 limestone islands and islets.

Astronomer CEO Andy Byron resigns after viral Coldplay ‘kiss cam’ controversy – NBC New York

    • Astronomer CEO Andy Byron has resigned after he was captured on video in an intimate embrace with his company’s chief people officer at a Coldplay concert.
    • Byron was placed on leave on Friday.

Astronomer announced on Saturday that CEO Andy Byron has resigned days after being caught on video in an intimate moment with the company’s head of human resources at a Coldplay concert.

“Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted,” the company said in a statement. “The Board will begin a search for our next Chief Executive as Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy continues to serve as interim CEO.”

Byron was shown on a big screen at the concert in Boston on Wednesday with his arms around Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot. Byron, who is married with children, immediately hid when the couple was shown on screen. Lead singer Chris Martin said, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” A concert attendee’s video of the affair went viral.

In May, Astronomer announced a $93 million investment round led by Bain Ventures and other investors, including Salesforce Ventures.

Byron’s resignation comes after Astronomer said Friday that it had launched a “formal investigation” into the matter, and the CEO was placed on administrative leave.

“Before this week, we were known as a pioneer in the DataOps space, helping data teams power everything from modern analytics to production AI,” the company said in its Saturday statement. “Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.”

When Trump called Murdoch legendary: Old clips of US President praising media giant go viral after lawsuit – watch

US President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against media mogul Rupert Murdoch, accusing him of defamation after the Wall Street Journal published a story linking Trump to a dicey birthday letter allegedly sent to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003.Soon after the lawsuit was announced, CNN aired several old clips of Trump openly praising Murdoch.

Internet Revives Katie Johnson’s 2016 Lawsuit Vs Trump; Grok Asked To Fact Check

The two powerful figures have had a complex relationship. At one point, Trump called Murdoch “an amazing guy” and said he was “in a class by himself.”The lawsuit follows the Wall Street Journal’s report that a birthday album made for Epstein’s 50th birthday contained a letter signed “Donald” and included a sketch of a naked woman. The Journal claims the note was among many letters collected by Ghislaine Maxwell for Epstein’s birthday.Trump denied the story and warned Murdoch against publishing it. “I told Rupert Murdoch it was a Scam, that he shouldn’t print this Fake Story,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “But he did, and now I’m going to sue his ass off, and that of his third rate newspaper.”He also wrote, “President Trump will be suing The Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp, and Mr Murdoch, shortly.”The row adds a new chapter to the long history between Trump and Murdoch. The duo have appeared close at times, but the relationship has often turned tense, especially when Murdoch’s media empire has published reports unfavourable to Trump.Back during his 2016 campaign, Murdoch criticised Trump after he mocked Senator John McCain, posting, “When is Donald Trump going to stop embarrassing his friends, let alone the whole country?”Still, Murdoch later encouraged Republicans to support Trump if he became the nominee. During Trump’s first term, the two reportedly spoke nearly every day, with Murdoch seen as an influential adviser. The relationship turned sour after the 2020 election. Murdoch privately criticised Trump’s claims of election fraud, calling them “a huge disservice to the country. Pretty much a crime.” In return, Trump blasted Murdoch and accused him of backing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a “Murdoch pick.”In August 2023, Trump said, “Fox News and the Wall Street Journal fight me because Murdoch is a globalist. And I am America First,” according to Axios. Despite tensions, Trump hosted Murdoch in the Oval Office earlier this year and was seen with him at a football match just days before the WSJ story was published. In the past, Trump has called Murdoch “legendary” and “an amazing businessman.”The lawsuit and media storm come as Trump faces renewed pressure from both supporters and critics over how he’s handled the Epstein files.

  • Israel’s continued interventions worsen Syria’s crisis: Turkish FM-Xinhua

ANKARA, July 19 (Xinhua) — Israel’s “continued interventions on Syrian territory” are worsening the crisis in Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Saturday, according to a report by semi-official Anadolu Agency.

“Any attack targeting Syria’s territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty undermines regional peace efforts,” Fidan told U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone conversation on the situation in southern Syria.

It is important to implement the mutual understanding reached by the parties involved, Fidan added, which should refer to an immediate and comprehensive nationwide ceasefire announced earlier in the day by the Syrian authorities.

In a statement issued Saturday morning, the Syrian authorities said the truce aimed to preserve national unity and ensure the safety of civilians amid “critical circumstances,” describing the move as a national and humanitarian obligation.

The statement came hours after U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack revealed the truce on X, stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa had agreed to a cessation of hostilities, brokered by Rubio.

  •  US aggression towards Iran | Pakistan Today

Having attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities in Operation “Midnight Hammer” without facing a fierce retaliation, US President Donald Trump indulged in a sense of victory and euphoria. The attack was aimed at annihilating Iran’s nuclear programme.

It would be pertinent to understand the reasons behind US aggression towards Iran. The key lies in understanding the objectives of the US in the Middle East.  In this context, a report titled “Challenges and Opportunities for the US in the Middle East” by The Middle East Institute, a Washington-based institution dedicated to the study of the Middle East, can be useful. The report mentions five objectives of the US in the Middle East: ensuring free flow of energy and trade to the world markets, thwarting the spread of weapons of mass destruction, combating terrorist groups, backing the partners and allies, and countering the influence of rival great powers.

In terms of Iran, the report warns the USA that Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programme, anti-US regional policies, and its proximity to Russia and China are a serious threat to the USA’s interests.

While shedding its hostile approach towards Iran, the US needs to embrace dialogue and diplomacy. Further use of force can compel Iran to step out of the NPT. The US-Israel aggression, failure of diplomacy and dialogue, and ineffectiveness of the NPT may strengthen Iran’s resolve to get nuclear weapons as the only enduring solution to its security challenges

The report further mentions that an unending conflict with Iran will damage all of the prescribed interests of the USA. Furthermore, the report recommends bringing down the Islamic Republic by empowering opposition forces in the country or in the diaspora, if the current regime does not change its course. So, following above-mentioned objectives and perceiving Iran as an unavoidable threat to them, the Trump administration tried to obliterate the nuclear facilities of Iran.

Now, the question arises, has the Trump administration achieved the desired objectives by attacking the nuclear facilities? In one’s view, the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has further added to the challenges to the USA’s hegemonic goals and world diplomacy.  The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael M. Grossi, maintains that the US attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has brought ‘severe’ damage but not ‘complete’ damage. He further says that Iran can again produce enriched uranium in ‘a matter of months.’

Iran’s nuclear programme was peaceful and under the meticulous surveillance of the IAEA. However, a reckless military move by the unpredictable Trump Administration has scuttled Iran’s peaceful nuclear position and has shrunk the room for nuclear diplomacy and dialogue.

It is a big blow to the efficacy of the nonproliferation regime. The Non-Proliferation Treaty has appeared to be a wall of sand in ensuring the nuclear security of Iran.  This is what Olamide Samuel posits, that “The conclusion many countries may now draw is that complying with NPT is no longer a guarantee of nuclear security.”

Secondly, the US attack on Iran’s nuclear sites has further compelled Iran to look at China and Russia. Recently, China has hosted the defence ministers of Russia and Iran for a meeting in its eastern seaside city of Qingdao. Though China could only extend diplomatic support in the recent 12-day war, it can offer much in terms of weaponry.  There are speculations that Iran is set to purchase Chinese equipment, including missile defence systems and J10C fighter jets. Nima Khorrami suggests that fostering a defence partnership with Iran, China would get‘indirect influence over the Strait of Hormuz’. Additionally, this partnership would be instrumental in gaining economic security, bridging the strategic gap left by India in Iran, and challenging India’s ambitions in Central Asia. However, given its relations with Israel and Saudi Arabia, China will have to take a ‘cautious posture.’

Thirdly, the US attack has further consolidated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s influence. The option of regime change is unlikely to bear fruit. A regime may only be successfully changed when the people of the country take the plunge to do it at any cost. Another option is military rebellion against the established government. However, in the case of Iran, there is no such indication, neither in the people nor in the military. On the contrary, Trump’s attack has solidified the state-people nexus. Furthermore, going for a regime change operation, notwithstanding its remote possibilities, can pose insurmountable challenges to the USA.

First, puppet leaders cannot stay longer in this age of information and awareness nor can they bring peace to their countries. If we look at the history of Iranians, they are unlikely to be compelled to toe the agenda of the USA. It took more than 20 years to bring Raza Pehlvi’s government down but it would be a matter of weeks or months now, if it is somehow restored. Second, regime change would further fortify the Iran-China-Russia nexus at the cost of the USA’s hegemonic goals. It would be a strategic failure for the USA.   Third, regime change would bring chaos to the region and the USA would be involved in a never-ending conflict. The Iranian proxies with the assistance of rival global powers would attack the USA’s interests and bases in the Middle East. So, regime change is counterproductive.

Abortive attempt to obliterate the nuclear facilities, Iran’s tilt to China, and failure to bring the Iranian government down show that the Trump administration has achieved nothing substantial by its short-sighted military action.  Coercive tactics to force Iran into rolling back its nuclear programme and limiting its missile capability would not work. Aggression is neither in favour of the USA’s objectives nor of regional peace.

While shedding its hostile approach towards Iran, the US needs to embrace dialogue and diplomacy. Further use of force can compel Iran to step out of the NPT. The US-Israel aggression, failure of diplomacy and dialogue, and ineffectiveness of the NPT may strengthen Iran’s resolve to get nuclear weapons as the only enduring solution to its security challenges.

Trump reiterates Iran nuclear sites destroyed despite contradicting reports

US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his assertion that American strikes “completely destroyed” Iran’s nuclear facilities despite emerging reports suggesting that key sites remain largely intact.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated his claim that “all three nuclear sites in Iran were completely destroyed and/or OBLITERATED.”

He suggested that it would take years for Iran to restore the facilities, proposing that the country would be better off starting anew at different locations.

On June 22, US bomb and missile strikes targeted Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, hitting key sites including the Fordo uranium enrichment facility, as well as locations in Isfahan and Natanz.

The bombings, carried out at the same time as an Israeli campaign against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure, were billed by Washington as a knockout blow to a years-long covert effort to build nuclear weapons.

Iran insists it has not tried to weaponise its civilian nuclear power programme.

Despite Trump’s claims of total success, several US media outlets have reported leaked intelligence suggesting a hazier picture.

The latest to cast doubt was an NBC News report Friday, quoting a military damage assessment that only one of the three sites was mostly destroyed.

Two other sites were deemed to be repairable and potentially able to resume uranium enrichment activities within “the next several months,” NBC reported, citing five current and former US officials aware of the assessment.

NBC also reported that the Pentagon had prepared an option to inflict far greater damage on Iran’s facilities through a bombing campaign that would have lasted several weeks, not the one-night operation chosen by Trump.

According to the report, citing one current and one former official, Trump rejected the more comprehensive attack plan due to fears of casualties and entanglement in the conflict.

Trump insists Iran nuclear sites destroyed amid reports some survived

WASHINGTON (AFP) – United States’ President Donald Trump on Saturday insisted that the US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities “completely destroyed” the sites after a report said that some had largely survived.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated his frequent claim that “all three nuclear sites in Iran were completely destroyed and/or OBLITERATED.”

He said it would “take years to bring them back into service and, if Iran wanted to do so, they would be much better off starting anew, in three different locations.”

US bomb and missile attacks struck Iran’s controversial nuclear programme on June 22, hitting the uranium enrichment facility at Fordo, south of Tehran, as well as nuclear sites in Isfahan and Natanz.
