    Understanding opioid safety and overdose prevention for older adults

    With increasing age, older adults are more likely to encounter health conditions and injuries that require opioid therapy for pain relief. This reality means that opioid overdoses are a concern for older adults as well as for their family members and other caregivers.

    A new Gerontological Society of America report, “Staying Safe with Opioids at Home,” describes questions about pain management and opioid reversal for older adults and their caregivers and presents a decision tree to guide their actions.

    Caregivers should take the steps described in this guide if someone has signs and symptoms that indicate an apparent overdose,” the report states. “To be prepared for a possible opioid overdose, naloxone should always be in the home if opioids are present or if any family members bring in opioids that were not purchased at a pharmacy.”

    Organized into four key questions, the report covers monitoring, storage, and discarding opioids; the most common and most serious side effects of opioids; prior use of illicit drugs and possible use of recreational drugs during opioid therapy; and what to do if family members and other caregivers are concerned that an older adult has overdosed on opioids.

    Among the key points emphasized in the report:

    • Naloxone (also commonly known as the brand name Narcan) is a medication that can be used to restore breathing in people who have overdosed on opioids. When opioids are prescribed, the health care professional should also prescribe naloxone. Consumers can also purchase naloxone without a prescription.
    • To be prepared for a possible opioid overdose, naloxone should always be in the home if opioids are present or if any family members bring in opioids that were not purchased at a pharmacy.
    • Naloxone works by temporarily reversing the effects of opioids like heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers.
    • When opioids are present in the home, they must be stored properly – safely away from pets, children, and drug-seeking adolescents and adults.
    • If someone appears to be unconscious and is not breathing normally, the life-saving medication naloxone should be administered.
    • Sedation and opioid overdoses are difficult to tell apart. When in doubt, act.
    • Even if a person has been safely taking opioids for a while, overdoses can occur.
    • Naloxone will not hurt a person even if it turns out there wasn’t an overdose.
    • “Lay, spray, and stay” are the basic steps in naloxone rescue.
    • It is essential to act quickly, as minutes matter in opioid overdoses. Death or permanent brain damage can occur quickly in someone who is in respiratory failure.
    • A person who receives naloxone needs to be evaluated by medical professionals even when naloxone works initially. Additional naloxone doses may be needed.

    Air Canada cancels flights during peak season ahead of flight attendant strike | Canada

    Canada’s largest airline has started cancelling flights during the peak summer travel season ahead of a strike by more than 10,000 flight attendants over what they say are “poverty wages” and unpaid labour for work when planes are not in the air.

    Air Canada said it would start suspending flights on Thursday ahead of full shutdown on Saturday after the flagship carrier and the union representing the flight attendants failed to resolve a months-long dispute over pay and working conditions.

    About 130,000 customers a day could be affected by a disruption, according to the airline.

    Air Canada and the Canadian union of public employees (Cupe) have been negotiating a new collective agreement for flight attendants since March. Among the unresolved issues are wages and compensation for work carried out on the ground. Flight attendants are currently not paid for any work before or after the plane takes off.

    Air Canada’s vice-president of corporate communications told CBC News on Tuesday that there was a “huge gap” between the two sides.

    Air Canada says it has offered “an increase of more than 38% on global compensation”, but the union says that figure still fails to fully account for inflation.

    Air Canada also said it was willing to pay flight attendants 50% of their wage for work done before planes take off, but Cupe says its members should be fully paid for that labour.

    Earlier this week, the union representing Air Canada’s flight attendants declined Air Canada’s request to resolve negotiations through arbitration. Under that scenario, a third-party arbitrator would weigh proposals from each side and then make a final decision that both the union and Air Canada would have to accept.

    “Despite our best efforts, Air Canada refused to address our core issues,” the union said after it rejected the request for arbitration.

    Air Canada says its decision to gradually suspend flights will allow for an orderly winding down of operations. The airline said it had also made arrangements with other carriers to give customers possible alternative travel options amid one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

    “We regret the impact a disruption will have on our customers, our stakeholders and the communities we serve,” said Michael Rousseau, Air Canada’s chief executive, in a statement.

    Canada’s federal minister for jobs and families, Patty Hajdu, said in a social media post on X on Tuesday evening that she was monitoring the situation, but that the federal government was not stepping in. “The best agreements are the ones the parties reach themselves,” she wrote.

    CISA, Microsoft update guidance on Exchange Server vulnerability

    The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Microsoft on Tuesday updated their mitigation guidance for a high-severity flaw in Exchange Server.

    The flaw, tracked as CVE-2025-53786, could allow an attacker with administrative privileges for on-premises versions of Exchange to escalate privileges by exploiting vulnerable hybrid joined configurations, Microsoft and CISA said last week

    In an update on Tuesday, CISA said it still saw no evidence of hackers exploiting the flaw, but it urged organizations to review Microsoft’s updated guidance on identifying Exchange Servers on a network and running the Microsoft Exchange Health Checker. 

    In its updated security bulletin, Microsoft said an attacker could potentially escalate privileges from an on-premises server to a connected cloud environment without leaving an “easily detectable and auditable trace.”

    Last week, the company urged users of on-premises Exchange servers to download its April 2025 Exchange Server hotfix updates. It also recommended that customers disconnect any internet-connected Exchange or SharePoint servers that have reached end-of-life status. 

    “An attacker would need to have obtained a highly privileged role to an on-premises server to attempt this exploitation,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Cybersecurity Dive on Tuesday. “We are deploying mitigations to protect against these risks while following an extensive process involving a thorough investigation, updated developments across all affected versions, and compatibility testing, to ensure maximized customer protection with minimized operational disruption.”

    Novel algorithm inspired by particle behavior enhances medical imaging

    Medical imaging methods such as ultrasound and MRI are often affected by background noise, which can introduce blurring and obscure fine anatomical details in the images. For clinicians who depend on medical images, background noise is a fundamental problem in making accurate diagnoses.

    Methods for denoising have been developed with some success, but they struggle with the complexity of noise patterns in medical images and require manual tuning of parameters, adding complexity to the denoising process.

    To solve the denoising problem, some researchers have drawn inspiration from quantum mechanics, which describes how matter and energy behave at the atomic scale. Their studies draw an analogy between how particles vibrate and how pixel intensity spreads out in images and causes noise. Until now, none of these attempts directly applied the full-scale mathematics of quantum mechanics to image denoising.

    In a paper this week in AIP Advances, by AIP Publishing, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Weill Cornell Medicine, GE HealthCare, and Université de Toulouse took a particle-pixel analogy to the next level.

    While quantum localization is a well-established phenomenon in physical materials, our key innovation was conceptualizing it for noisy images – translating the physics literally, not just metaphorically. This foundational analogy didn’t exist before. We’re the first to formalize it.”

    A central concept in the math describing matter and energy, localization is used to explain how particles vibrate in a space. Vibrations that stay confined are considered localized, while vibrations that spread out are diffused. Similarly, pixel intensity, or brightness, in a clear image can be considered localized, while noisy patterns in an image can be considered diffused.

    The authors apply the same mathematics that describes the localization of particle vibrations in the surrounding physical space to decipher the localization of pixel intensity in images. In this way, they can separate the noise-free “signal” of the anatomical structures in the image from the visual noise of stray pixels.

    “The main aspect was developing an algorithm that automatically separates the localized (signal) and nonlocalized (noise) components of pixels in an image by exploiting their distinct behaviors,” Hashemi said.

    The researchers’ direct application of the physics and mathematics of particles also eliminated the need to manually fine-tune parameters in denoising algorithms, which Hashemi said is a major hindrance in traditional approaches.

    “Our method leverages physics-driven principles, like localization and diffusive dynamics, which inherently separate noise from signal without expensive optimization,” Hashemi said. “The algorithm just works by design, avoiding brute-force computations.”

    Their method has applications not only in medical image denoising, but across quantum computing, too.

    “Our physics-driven framework aligns with the computational primitives of quantum systems, offering a potential performance advantage as quantum computing scales.”

    All large galaxies are thought to host supermassive black holes (SMBH). When the black holes are actively accreting material and emitting radiation, astrophysicists call them active galactic nuclei (AGN). Some AGN emit relativistic jets, streams of ionized matter moving at near the speed of light. When those powerful jets are pointed at us, we call them blazars.

    Blazars are extreme and enigmatic objects, and astrophysicists have unanswered questions about them. The mechanisms behind their jets are poorly understood. What role do magnetic fields play? How are particles in the jets accelerated so that they emit gamma rays? How do they emit neutrinos? Some jets extend for thousands of light years, yet are variable in timescales as short as a few minutes. What causes that?

    New research in Astronomy and Astrophysics is providing an answer to one of the stubborn questions. It’s titled “Looking into the jet cone of the neutrino-associated very high-energy blazar PKS 1424+240.” The lead author is Yuri Kovalev, Principal Investigator of the MuSES project at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR). MuSES stands for Multi-messenger Studies of Extragalactic Super-colliders, and it’s aimed at probing the AGN jets to understand how they form, collimate, produce neutrinos, and accelerate particles.

    PKS 1424+240 is a slow-moving blazar that could be one of the brightest sources of neutrinos and high-energy gamma rays ever found. It’s also called a BL Lacertae object, or simply BL Lac, after its prototype object BL Lacertae. Bl Lacs are known for “large-amplitude flux variability and significant optical polarization.” They’re also known for their almost featureless spectra, This sets them aside from other AGN that show emission lines from their hot gas.

    PKS 1424+240 is billions of light-years away, and despite being the subject of lots of scientific inquiry, it’s still baffling. Despite the neutrinos and high-energy gamma photons it emits, its jet is rather slow. This goes against expectation that the fastest jets should be the most energetic and the brightest.

    It’s taken 15 years, but astronomers using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in New Mexico have pieced together an image of the jet at the highest-resolution ever achieved.

    “When we reconstructed the image, it looked absolutely stunning,” lead author Kovalev said in a press release. “We have never seen anything quite like it—a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field with a jet, pointing straight at us.”

    It turns out that the jet’s aligned almost perfectly with Earth, so its high-energy emissions are amplified. “Our observations uncover a rare scenario. The object is viewed inside the jet cone, very close to the axis of its relativistic jet, with a viewing angle of < 0.6°,” the authors explain in their research.

    “This alignment causes a boost in brightness by a factor of 30 or more,” explains Jack Livingston, a co-author at MPIfR. “At the same time, the jet appears to move slowly due to projection effects—a classic optical illusion.”

    It takes a near perfect alignment to be able to peer right into the jet. Polarized radio signals from the jet let the researchers map the magnetic field’s structure, revealing that it’s likely toroidal. This structure may enable the jet to accelerate particles to such extremely high energies.

    “Solving this puzzle confirms that active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes are not only powerful accelerators of electrons, but also of protons—the origin of the observed high-energy neutrinos,” concludes Kovalev. Accelerated protons don’t directly produce neutrinos, but they’re at the beginning of a chain of events that results in neutrinos.

    This research is a result of the NRAO’s MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments) observing program. MOJAVE is a long-term program to observe AGN jets that vary in polarization and radio brightness. Some of its targets have been observed for 30 years. These results are exactly what MOJAVE was trying to accomplish.

    “When we started MOJAVE, the idea of one day directly connecting distant black hole jets to cosmic neutrinos felt like science fiction. Today, our observations are making it real,” says Anton Zensus, Director at MPIfR and co-founder of the program.

    Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, will be jet-setting next month as she is expected to travel to Alberta, in western Canada, on September 4-7, in a new role as Royal Patron of Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament. The show jumping venue announced that the Duchess had become its patron in April.

    During her visit to the venue, Sophie will tour the grounds, meet athletes, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders, attend events, and enjoy world-class show jumping as part of Spruce Meadows’ 50th Anniversary celebrations. She’ll also visit local charities supported by the Spruce Meadows Leg Up Foundation.

    Sophie’s visit has been warmly welcomed by the team at Spruce Meadows, lead by President and CEO, Linda Southern-Heathcott, who called the announcement “the most wonderful way in which we could have possibly celebrated our 50th Anniversary year.”

    Google’s Gemini AI will get more personalized by remembering details automatically

    Google is rolling out an update for Gemini that will allow the AI chatbot to “remember” your past conversations without prompting. With the setting turned on, Gemini will automatically recall your “key details and preferences” and use them to personalize its output.

    This expands upon an update that Google introduced last year, which lets you ask Gemini to “remember” your personal preferences and interests. Now, Gemini won’t need prompting to recall this information. As an example, Google says if you’ve used Gemini to get ideas for a YouTube channel surrounding Japanese culture in the past, then AI chatbot might suggest creating content about trying Japanese food if you ask it to suggest new video ideas in the future.

    When asked about this issue, Google spokesperson Elijah Lawal said Google is “constantly” trying to improve its safeguards. “Our focus has been building a personal AI assistant, and Gemini learning your preferences is key to this,” Lawal said. “Equally crucial is giving you easy controls to choose the experience that’s best for you, so you can turn this feature on and off at any time.”

    Google will turn on this feature by default, but you can disable it by heading to your settings in the Gemini app and selecting Personal Context. From there, toggle off the Your past chats with Gemini option. Google will roll out this feature to its Gemini 2.5 Pro model in “select countries” starting today, before eventually bringing it to more locations and its Gemini 2.5 Flash model.

    Google is making a change to its privacy settings, as well. In the “coming weeks,” Google will rename its “Gemini Apps Activity” setting to “Keep Activity.” When you enable this option, Google will use “a sample” of your file and photo uploads to Gemini to “help improve Google services for everyone” starting on September 2nd, according to its blog post.     You can also preserve privacy through a new “temporary chats” option in Gemini. Temporary chats won’t appear in your recent chats or your Keep Activity setting. Gemini also won’t use these chats to personalize future conversations, nor will Google use them to train its AI models. Google will only save these conversations for 72 hours. The says temporary chats could come in handy for “exploring private questions” or to prevent Gemini from referencing the details of the conversation in a future chat.
