ECP disqualifies MNA Jamshed Dasti over fake degree

    • ECP approves two petitions, a reference against Jamshed Dasti.
    • Electoral body decided to get Dasti’s credentials verified in May.
    • Dasti was elected from Muzaffargarh’s NA-175 in 2024 elections.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday disqualified Member of the National Assembly Jamshed Dasti for holding fake degree.

The development comes as the electoral body approved two petitions, including a reference filed by the National Assembly speaker, against Dasti seeking his disqualification.

In May, the commission had decided to get the educational certificates of Member National Assembly (MNA) Jamshed Dasti verified by the Karachi Education Board.

Dasti, who was elected from NA-175, Muzaffargarh, in the last general elections, faced cases under Articles 62, 63, Sections 4, 9, 137 of the Elections Act, 2017. Petitions were filed against him by Ameer Akbar, Zulfiqar Dogar and Sardar Faizul Hassan.

A three-member ECP bench headed by ECP Member (Sindh) Nisar Durrani had heard the petition of Ameer Akbar regarding assets and liabilities against MNA Dasti.

The ECP’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) member inquired whether the MNA had any property that the Election Commission had not been informed about, to which the petitioner’s lawyer took the stand that Dasti had written FA qualification (Intermediate degree) on his nomination papers while he had not completed his matriculation, The News reported.

He went on to claim that the Bahawalpur University had declared Dasti’s BA and FA certificates fake. “He claimed to have completed his matriculation from Bahawalpur Board, but that too is fake.”

The petitioner’s lawyer further said Dasti had just submitted his matriculation certificate from Karachi Board in response, to which the KP member said the ECP had the power to disqualify him.

  • Santa Ragione says Apple is delisting Wheels of Aurelia ‘without justification’

Santa Ragione says Apple is delisting Wheels of Aurelia ‘without justification’

Horses and Saturnalia developer Santa Ragione has accused Apple of undermining the “value and sustainability of games as cultural and artistic products” after the tech company informed the studio its 2016 visual novel Wheels of Aurelia will be pulled from the App Store without “clear justification.”

Studio co-founder and director Pietro Righi Riva shared the news with Game Developer and explained Wheels of Aurelia will be removed from the App Store on July 25, 2025. It was apparently granted an extended grace period after Santa Ragione appealed the decision—even though those appeals were ultimately denied.

The studio has decided to make the title available free-to-download on the platform for the next 10 days to ensure as many people as possible can experience it before it is yanked from digital shelves.

Riva said Apple has so far failed to provide an adequate explanation as to why the award-winning title has been marked for removal. “Despite multiple appeals and sincere efforts to seek clarification, Apple has not provided clear justification for this removal, citing only their policy to remove apps deemed ‘obsolete’ or ‘outdated,’ despite the game being fully functional and compliant with current technical standard,” he explained.

“We firmly believe that removing fully functional artistic works simply due to infrequent updates undermines the value and sustainability of games as cultural and artistic products. Like books, films, and music albums, video games represent complete creative works that do not inherently require continual updates beyond maintaining basic functionality.”

“This ‘obsoletion’ policy further reinforces a vision that does not recognize games as an art form”

After his initial email appeal was quashed, Riva explained his second appeal resulted in a phone call with a member of Apple’s team who instructed them to file another appeal via a different form. In that instance, Riva underlined that Wheels of Aurelia “continues to function properly and meets all expectations of users, including full compatibility with Game Center and the latest screen ratios.”

He also emphasized that certain video games and other creative works “do not inherently require continuous updates beyond ensuring functionality and compliance with current regulation and technological requirements.”

“Updating Wheels of Aurelia at this stage would demand very significant resources solely to refresh engine and SDK elements without providing meaningful enhancements to user experience or artistic value,” he added in that second appeal, the contents of which were shared with Game Developer.

“For smaller development teams, such forced updates represent a substantial financial burden, diverting limited resources from new projects or critical ongoing work. Alternatively, removing these titles from the App Store impacts developers’ portfolios and visibility, ultimately affecting their sustainability and recognition in a very competitive industry.”

Riva then received a message explaining that Santa Ragione’s appeal was being evaluated. He claims it was rejected five minutes later.

Riva feels Apple’s approach to delisting titles it has deemed “outdated” leaves smaller developers at risk of needing to continuously update projects to meet vague demands, costing them time and money that might otherwise be spent on sustaining other projects or kickstarting new endeavours.

In addition, he says Apple’s “dominant position in digital distribution makes those practices especially troubling” and reinforces the important of diversified ecosystems. “We commend recent EU regulations designed to prevent monopolistic behaviors, fostering more fairness and plurality in the digital marketplace,” he added.

As for whether the situation will impact Santa Ragione’s plans to support Apple platforms moving forward, Riva said the team was already discouraged by the company’s shift away from human curation and questioned whether the company is actually committed to helping game developers succeed.

“This ‘obsoletion’ policy further reinforces a vision that does not recognize games as an art form,” he added. “It is a view that, unfortunately, is becoming increasingly common across the industry. In this context, it is hard to imagine how we could ever thrive within Apple’s ecosystem.”

Wheels of Aurelia remains available on other platforms including PlayStation and Steam.

Game Developer has reached out to Apple for comment.

Indonesian defence minister expresses Jakarta’s desire to boost defence ties with Pakistan – Pakistan

Indonesia’s Defence Minister Lt Gen (retired) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin expressed his country’s desire to boost defence ties and explore possible collaboration in defence production as he met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Pakistan and Indonesia maintain strong bilateral relations rooted in shared religion and culture, with both countries cooperating in trade, education, and health.

Gen Sjamsoeddin called on PM Shehbaz at the PM Office today, where he reiterated Indonesia’s desire to “further strengthen defence ties with Pakistan and to explore possible areas for cooperation, especially in defence production”, according to a statement from government-run PID.

The Indonesian minister conveyed the best wishes of President Prabowo Subianto for the prime minister and people of Pakistan, the press release added.

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz “reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to explore and expand collaboration with Indonesia in joint ventures of investment in mutually beneficial projects”, the statement said.

The prime minister also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation with Indonesia in all avenues, including economic, strategic and trade sectors, along with defence and defence production.

He highlighted that Pakistan and Indonesia enjoyed a “longstanding friendship rooted in shared cultural, religious and historical bonds, supporting each other at international forums”.

Both sides stressed the importance of “enhancing multifaceted bilateral cooperation”, according to the PID.

“The meeting underscored the deep-rooted historical, brotherly and friendly bilateral relations between Pakistan and Indonesia,” the statement noted.

Recalling his meeting last year with Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto on the sidelines of Developing-8 Summit in Cairo, PM Shehbaz conveyed his best wishes for the Indonesian president.

The prime minister also reviewed ongoing initiatives under the Pakistan-Indonesia Defence Cooperation Agreement and agreed to “accelerate the implementation of key areas of mutual interest”, the PID added.

In June, the two countries decided to increase cooperation in areas such as vaccine production in Pakistan, the establishment of medical institutions in Indonesia, pharmaceutical development and human resource exchange.

Last year, Indonesian Charge d’Affaires Rahmat Hindiarta hosted an exclusive dinner for Pakistani business leaders and their spouses at the Indonesian Embassy to enhance bilateral finance and trade relations.

McMahon siblings bring Irish charm to local LA community

Irish siblings Eve McMahon and Ewan McMahon, plus two-time Olympian Finn Lynch, are also in Southern California competing in the dinghy, already gathering data on racing and training conditions specific to Long Beach.

Away from the water the team took part in a Q&A session with Scouts of America at a local sailing camp to continue their commitment to supporting grassroots sport, even when away from home.

Ireland performance director James O’Callaghan, who is with the team in LA, commented: “It’s great to be here for the regatta, but our main goal is to learn about the venue and surrounding areas.

“We’ve been fortunate to receive fantastic support from the Irish community here. That ‘home from home’ ethos is truly coming to life — the team has been warmly welcomed, and it’s been a great chance to build connections with the Irish diaspora.”

Meanwhile, Slovenia’s Toni Vodisek who secured silver in men’s kite, at Paris 2024, adopted Tour de France vibes from his fellow countryman, Tadej Pogačar.

“Taking the yellow bib for the first day like Tadej Pogačar,” wrote Vodisek on his Instagram stories after building an extensive lead with seven wins out of nine in the initial stages.

Meanwhile, US athlete, Daniela Moroz, a six-time world champion in women’s kite who finished in an agonising fourth place at Paris 2024, posted: “Back to kite foiling for the first time since the Olympics 🤯 Feels good to be back to training on the water in my new home. Taking it one day at a time.”

So the next Olympic sailing location is getting the seal of approval from athletes, as well as, it seems, the local wildlife.

  • Lamine Yamal: Barcelona winger set to be investigated over dwarfism row

Lamine Yamal: Barcelona winger set to be investigated over dwarfism row

Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has asked the country’s prosecutor’s office to investigate Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal after he reportedly hired people with dwarfism to perform at his 18th birthday party.

Lamine Yamal hosted a party on Sunday at a rented property in Olivella, a small town 50 kilometres north west of Barcelona, with guests including YouTubers, influencers, and several Barcelona team-mates.

It is alleged Lamine Yamal hired a group of entertainers with dwarfism, something the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) described as “unacceptable in the 21st century”.

When contacted by BBC Sport, the Directorate General for People with Disabilities – part of the Ministry of Social Rights, ConsumerAffairs, and 2030 Agenda – said: “ADEE has filed a legal complaint.

“Therefore, this Directorate General has asked the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate to determine whether the law and, therefore, the rights of people with disabilities have been violated.”

The ADEE said it “publicly denounces the hiring of people with dwarfism as part of the entertainment,” and said it would take legal action as it “perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights” of people with disabilities.

In a statement it said: “These actions violate not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful.

“The general law on the rights of persons with disabilities expressly prohibits the following practices: ‘Shows or recreational activities in which people with disabilities or other circumstances are used to provoke mockery, ridicule, or derision from the public in a manner contrary to the respect due to human dignity are prohibited’.”

However, Spanish radio station RAC1, external broadcast an interview with someone claiming to be one of the entertainers present at the party who defended Lamine Yamal.

“No-one disrespected us, we worked in peace,” said the artist, who asked to remain anonymous.

“I don’t understand why there’s so much hype. We’re normal people, who do what we want, in an absolutely legal way.

“We work as entertainers. Why can’t we do it? Because of our physical condition?

“We know what our limit is and we will never exceed it: we are not fairground monkeys.”

The performer said it lasted one hour, and afterwards the entertainers joined in with the party.

“We dance, we distribute drinks, we do magic… there are many types of shows. Everyone had a great time.”

When approached for comment by BBC Sport, a Barcelona spokesperson said the club was “not in a position to comment on an act that falls strictly within the private sphere”, but added their position would be reassessed once “concrete information” has been ascertained.

  • The macroeconomic impact of the 2014-2020 European cohesion policy programmes

In this paper, we analyse the macroeconomic impact of the 2014-2020 European cohesion policy programmes based on simulations carried out with a spatial dynamic general equilibrium model. We use the latest data on actual expenditures including the EUR 50 billion falling under the recovery assistance for cohesion and the territories of Europe (REACT-EU). We quantify the direct and indirect potential effects of the policy on the NUTS 2 regions of the European Union within a 20-year time frame. The results suggest that the impact of the policy is sizeable, especially in the less developed regions. Accordingly, regional disparities are shown to decrease due to the policy intervention. The investments have also a positive impact on EU GDP, which is almost 0.6 % higher in 2023 compared to a scenario without cohesion policy.

  • Asian Development Bank recommends 5pc GST on digital transactions – Pakistan

Asian Development Bank recommends 5pc GST on digital transactions – Pakistan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has advised Pakistan to implement a uniform 5 per cent general sales tax (GST) for all digital transactions to encourage nationwide adoption of e-commerce platforms, reduce cash-related inefficiencies and document the economy.

In its latest report on Pakistan’s Digital Ecosystem issued yesterday, the ADB cautioned that steep and inconsistent taxes on digital infrastructure in the country pose a serious risk to foreign investment, growth, and the expansion of digital services.

“Pakistan’s digital infrastructure faces a major challenge from high taxation. Taxes on this sector, both federal and provincial, are some of the highest globally and regionally, and the tax policies tend not to be very consistent,” the report said.

“The cost of service provision exacerbates the digital divide, especially for women and marginalised groups, who face asymmetric cost and cultural barriers to accessing the internet.”

The report further added that the telecom sector in Pakistan “experienced a decline in revenues and foreign investment, which reflects a very challenging business environment”.

It called for a “renewed focus is needed by the government on engaging with investors and industry stakeholders to address their concerns and provide incentives and facilitation to invest and operate in the country”.

In its recommendations on the digital economy, the report also advised to cut corporate income tax rates and the cost of doing business for SMEs by 10pc for the next 10 years, conditional on the businesses registering themselves and using digital platforms for their transactions.

Other recommendations included simplifying taxation and foreign exchange regimes for ICT export companies; capping income tax for staff of ICT-export companies to 15pc; tax credits for women-led digital businesses; single window regulation; providing low-interest loans; and mandating through the State Bank of Pakistan that commercial banks allocate at least 15pc of their loan portfolios to SMEs with a minimum of 50pc emphasis on digital and ICT businesses.

The ADB urged the government to “rationalise all digital infrastructure taxes, both direct and indirect, making them competitive against a basket of countries, and fix sector tax rates for at least 10 years”.

Pakistan currently has 56.5pc broadband penetration with 137 million subscriptions. Every province charges a regressive sales tax of 19.5pc on internet service usage which is higher than any other service, ADB added.

“High capital investment; regulatory obstacles; costly and cumbersome Right of Way (RoW) arrangements; and high, unpredictable taxes hinder new investments in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure,” the report stated.

Pakistan has the world’s lowest average revenue per user due to fierce competition among service providers, the report noted, adding that revenues of operators and telecom companies have been “shrinking” in real terms.

It recommended mandating a flat countrywide optimal RoW fee per meter — permission granted to telecom companies to install and maintain their infrastructure (like fiber optic cables, mobile towers, etc) — and provide for a predictable rise over a longer period.

It also recommended prioritising early-stage investments in digital infrastructure projects, promote local manufacturing of smartphones, and provide 3pc research and development allowance on exports of locally produced smartphones.

The ADB advised the government to create a “robust enabling legal and regulatory framework for development and implementation of public–private partnerships (PPPs) for digital infrastructure”.

It also called for expanding internet access and device ownership for citizens, especially women, working with local and global partners to design tailored PPP programmes, and providing low-cost or easy installment-based smartphones.
