India separatist group says army killed leaders in Myanmar strikes – World

Separatist militants in northeastern India said the Indian army carried out cross-border drone strikes on the group’s camps in neighbouring Myanmar on Sunday, killing three of its leaders.

Some separatist groups in northeastern India have ethnic, linguistic and cultural ties with minorities across the border in Myanmar and maintain a presence there.

Three commanders of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) were killed and 19 others wounded in a drone attack in Myanmar near the border, the separatist group said in a series of statements.

According to Indian outlet The Hindustan Times, the ULFA-I claimed that three of its members were killed in the attack that used over 150 Israeli-made drones.

In a statement, the ULFA-I claimed that the attack by “Indian occupational forces” took place at several camps from the border with Myanmar near Longwa in Nagaland till Pangsai Pass in Arunachal Pradesh between 2am (1:30am PKT) and 4am (3:30am PKT) on Sunday.

The outfit claimed that nearly 150-plus drones used in the attack were manufactured in Israel and France. It said the attacks claimed the life of the outfit’s lieutenant general Nayan Medhi (alias Nayan Asom), and injured 19 others.

In a second release, the ULFA-I said that two more leaders, “Brigadier Ganesh Asom and Colonel Pradip Asom, were killed in a subsequent missile attack.”

“While the last rites of Nayan Asom were being carried out, missile attacks were carried out in which Ganesh Asom and Pradip Asom became martyrs and several officers, cadres and civilians sustained injuries,” the statement issued on Sunday said.

The ULFA-I statement added that Indian Army operations in the area across the border were still continuing till Sunday morning. The outfit vowed to give a befitting reply to the action on its camps.

Indian daily The Hindu reported that, according to the group, the subsequent strikes were carried out with missiles and struck a funeral for the commander killed in the drone attack.

Indian authorities have yet to confirm the strikes.

Camps belonging to another rebel group, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), were also targeted, the ULFA-I added.

The ULFA-I is one of several insurgent groups in India, and wants independence for the northeastern state of Assam, while the PLA advocates for the secession of Manipur state.

One faction of the ULFA laid down arms and signed a peace deal with the Indian government in 2023. According to the Indian outlet The Deccan Herald, the group was split, with those against talks making up the ULFA-I faction.

Separatist attacks have drastically reduced in recent years, but the violence has killed thousands of people, mostly civilians, over the last three decades.

  • Inside NCCPL’s Rulebook Shift

    Inside NCCPL’s Rulebook Shift

July 13, 2025 (MLN): The National
Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) has issued proposed amendments to
its 2015 regulations, inviting public commentary. These proposals cover
revisions to margin structures and broaden access to clearing and settlement
mechanisms, notably for digital banks and equity-based Exchange Traded Funds
    (ETFs).

    While
progressive in spirit, they warrant close scrutiny for their broader
implications on market resilience and risk visibility.

    Margins:
    Simpler, But Safer?

    NCCPL proposed
to remove Market-Wide and UIN-Wide concentration
margin requirements, and raising Broker-Wide margin rates by absorbing
UIN-level margins into the broker’s slab.

    It will help
Streamlining risk management, align margin collection with actual exposure
bearers and reducing complexity in calculations and application.

    However,
Simplification may aid execution but risks diluting systemic oversight.
Eliminating Market-Wide metrics removes an important safety net that captured
multi-broker accumulation in thinly traded scrips.

    The proposal
assumed concentrated exposure is best monitored at the broker level. However, a
client’s spread across multiple brokers could remain opaque.

    In addition,
by dropping the client-level margin, NCCPL shifts risk exposure upward without
    enforcing a granular tracing mechanism.

    To address
these concerns, retain periodic Market-Wide stress indicators as a
non-intrusive check. Further, the authority should introduce voluntary
UIN-level exposure dashboards for broker surveillance.

    In addition,
pilot-test the enhanced margin table across historical volatility events to
    calibrate effectiveness.

    Digital
    Banks in the clearing system

    NCCPL
proposed admitting SBP-licensed digital banks as Clearing Members and Settling
    Banks.

Key relaxations include no physical branch
requirement and rating waiver for six months with conditions to modernize settlement
channels, facilitate fintech integration and enhance participant choice.

    While
supportive of digital entrants, the provisional rating waiver needs tighter
    controls to prevent undercapitalized participants.

    Absence of
physical branches means robust technical frameworks must exist to ensure
real-time settlement without failovers. Further, digital-only models might
present verification hurdles unless paired with enhanced scrutiny protocols.

    To ensure
the tighter controls, mandate external audits or system readiness
certifications before final admission. In addition, include contingency clauses
addressing tech outages or systemic disruption.

    ETFs
    and Clearing Membership

    NCCPL is
also planning to exempt equity-based ETFs from mandatory admission as
Non-Broker Clearing Members (NBCMs) and from volume-based trading thresholds
    that trigger such admissions.

    The aim of
this intent is to align local practice with global standards, reduce
unnecessary regulatory overhead, and enhance operational agility for ETFs.

    It is
important to note that passive structure does not equal to passive risk. Though
passive by design, ETFs can show sudden spikes in turnover during rebalancing
    or market volatility.

    Moreover, lack
of clear-cut definitions for “equity-based ETF” might invite regulatory
    arbitrage or misapplication.

    Thus, it is
recommended to define qualifiers for equity-based ETFs (e.g., percentage equity
holdings, turnover window), develop ETF-specific flags or benchmarks to track
unusual activity and keep voluntary NBCM pathways open with optional risk
    assessment incentives.

    Conclusion

    These
proposals clearly showcase NCCPL’s intent to simplify regulation, embrace
fintech growth, and align clearing structures with operational realities.

    However,
markets thrive not only on efficiency but also on robust checks and balances.
The removal of certain margin tiers and expansion to digital entities should be
offset by stronger analytic, systemic, and contingency protocols to uphold the
    financial ecosystem’s stability.

  • 1. The current crisis is as much economic as AI-led

A shifting graduate labour market is not unusual, said Kirsten Barnes, head of digital platform at Bright Network, which connects graduates and young professionals to employers.

“Any shifts in the graduate job market this year – which typically fluctuates by 10-15% – appear to be driven by a combination of factors, including wider economic conditions and the usual fluctuations in business demand, rather than a direct impact from AI alone. We’re not seeing a consistent trend across specific sectors,” she said.

Claire Tyler, head of insights at the Institute for Student Employers (ISE), which represents major graduate employers, said that among companies recruiting fewer graduates “none of them have said it’s down to AI”.

Some recruitment specialists cited the recent increase in employer national insurance contributions as a factor in slowing down entry-level recruitment.

Ed Steer, chief executive off Sphere Digital Recruitment, which hires for junior marketer and sales roles in tech and media, said graduate vacancies have fallen from 400 a year in 2021 to an expected 75 this year. He put the drop down to businesses wanting to hire more experienced applicants who can “deliver for their customers on day one”.

  • 2. But AI is definitely a factor

However, Auria Heanley, co-founder of Oriel Partners, which recruits for personal assistant roles, has seen a 30% drop in entry-level roles this year. She said she had “no doubt” that “AI combined with wider economic uncertainty, is making it much tougher for graduates to find these roles”.

Felix Mitchell, co-chief executive at Instant Impact, which recruits for mid-sized businesses, said jobs related to Stem [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] were the most disrupted. “I do think that the evidence suggests that AI will likely be a net job creator, but the losses are happening faster than the gains.”

  • 3. The revolution is only going to accelerate

Major tech companies such as Microsoft are trumpeting the impact of AI agents – systems that perform human-level cognitive tasks autonomously – as tools that can be competent assistants in the workplace, with early adopters including the consultancy McKinsey and the law firm Clifford Chance. Dario Amodei, the boss of AI the developer Anthropic, has warned that the technology could wipe out half of all entry-level office jobs in the next five years.

James Reed, chief executive of the employment agency Reed, said AI would transform the whole jobs market from now on: “This is the year of AI… lots of businesses are really doubling down on it, investing in it.

“This feels like the year that AI is really changing and getting embedded – for better or for worse.”

Sophie O’Brien, chief executive of Pollen Careers, which caters for early-career and entry-level roles, said AI had “accelerated” a decline in graduate recruitment that has been going on for a few years now: “The job market could look vastly different in even a year’s time.”

She added: “For a lot of professional, desk-based jobs where you are processing information on a laptop it’s entirely obvious that a huge number of those jobs over the next few years are going to be redundant. There’s a workforce crisis that is going to happen and I don’t know if we are ready for this.”

  • 4. Learn AI skills now

David Bell, at the executive search firm Odgers, said law firms are demanding AI competence from graduates. “As part of the interview process for the graduate intake they are asking them about their understanding and usage of AI,” he said. “Anyone who has not been using ChatGPT or the equivalent will struggle to be taken on board.”

James Milligan, global head of Stem at recruitment multinational Hays, agreed. “If they do not have that second skill set around how to use AI then they are definitely going to be at a disadvantage,” he said. “Jobs don’t die, they evolve and change. I think we are in a process of evolutionary change at the moment.”

Chris Morrow, managing director at Digitalent, an agency that specialises in recruiting AI-related roles, said that rather than the technology taking jobs it was creating a new category of AI-adjacent positions: “It is opening windows to jobs that did not exist 12 months ago, like AI ethics and prompt engineering. New roles are being born.”

With such demand for expertise, universities are being urged to adapt courses accordingly. Louise Ballard, a co-founder of Atheni.ai, which helps companies adopt AI technology, says there is a problem with “basic AI literacy skills” not being taught in higher education.

“You people are not getting the training they need,” she said. “The skills required at being good at AI are not necessarily the academic skills you have acquired.”

The real risk, said Morrow, was not that AI takes jobs but that educational institutions and government policy fail to keep up. “Universities need to embed AI learning across all their subjects,” he said.

  • 5. Graduates are using AI to apply for jobs – but should take care

AI is an obvious aid for filling out CVs and forms as well as writing cover letters. Many of the organisations contacted by the Guardian reported a surge in applications now that filing one has become easier.

Bright Network said the number of graduates and undergraduates using AI for their applications has risen from 38% last year to 50%. Teach First, a major graduate employer, said it plans to accelerate use of vetting processes that don’t involve writing to reduce the impact of computer-drafted entries.

The ISE’s Tyler warned that excessive use of AI in applications could results in employers ending recruitment campaigns early and targeting specific groups with recruitment work. Ending such drives early could also affect under-represented groups, she said.

Errors that were once seen as red flags might now be seen in a different way, says James Reed. “In the old days we used to screen out CVs that had spelling mistakes because we’d think the person isn’t paying attention to detail or is approaching things with a casual mindset. Now if you see someone’s CV with a spelling mistake you think: ‘Wow, that’s actually written by a person – it’s the real thing.’”

  • 6. Consider applying to smaller businesses

Small-to-medium-sized enterprises, or businesses that employ fewer than 250 people, were also singled out as an opportunity for graduates.

Pollen’s O’Brien pointed out that SMEs are the biggest employers in the UK, at 60% of the workforce, and any lack of AI knowledge on their part could present an employment opportunity.

“A lot of these businesses don’t know how to use AI, they are scared of AI and there is a huge opportunity for young graduates to be bringing those skills into small companies that are still hiring,” she said. “If you bring these skills into a small business you could revolutionise that business.”

Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, said there were thousands of “under the radar” employers below the level of big corporates who were “desperate for brainy individuals”.

“There is this huge, hidden market and it gets rarely reported,” he said.

  • AI system StreamDiT generates livestream videos from text at 16 fps 512p

AI system StreamDiT generates livestream videos from text at 16 fps 512p

    Summary

A new AI system called StreamDiT can generate livestream videos from text descriptions, opening up new possibilities for gaming and interactive media.

Developed by researchers at Meta and the University of California, Berkeley, StreamDiT creates videos in real time at 16 frames per second using a single high-end GPU. The model, with 4 billion parameters, outputs videos at 512p resolution. Unlike previous methods that generate full video clips before playback, StreamDiT produces video streams live, frame by frame.

    Video: Kodaira et al.

The team showcased various use cases. StreamDiT can generate minute-long videos on the fly, respond to interactive prompts, and even edit existing videos in real time. In one demo, a pig in a video was transformed into a cat while the background stayed the same.

The system relies on a custom architecture built for speed. StreamDiT uses a moving buffer to process multiple frames simultaneously, working on the next frame while outputting the previous one. New frames start out noisy but are gradually refined until they are ready for display. According to the paper, the system takes about half a second to generate two frames, producing eight finished images after processing.

StreamDiT divides its buffer into fixed reference frames and short chunks. An auto-sequence visualization shows image similarity decreasing (from green to red) as denoising progresses. | Image: Kodaira et al.

    Training for versatility

The training process was designed to improve versatility. Instead of focusing on a single video creation method, the model was trained with several approaches, using 3,000 high-quality videos and a larger dataset of 2.6 million videos. Training took place on 128 Nvidia H100 GPUs. The researchers found that mixing chunk sizes from 1 to 16 frames produced the best results.

To achieve real-time performance, the team introduced an acceleration technique that cuts the number of required calculation steps from 128 to just 8, with minimal impact on image quality. The architecture is also optimized for efficiency: rather than having every image element interact with all others, information is exchanged only between local regions.

In head-to-head comparisons, StreamDiT outperformed existing methods like ReuseDiffuse and FIFO diffusion, especially for videos with a lot of movement. While other models tended to create static scenes, StreamDiT generated more dynamic and natural motion.

Human raters evaluated the system’s performance on fluidity of motion, completeness of animation, consistency across frames, and overall quality. In every category, StreamDiT came out on top when tested on eight-second, 512p videos.

    Bigger model, better quality—but slower

The team also experimented with a much larger 30-billion-parameter model, which delivered even higher video quality, though it wasn’t fast enough for real-time use. The results suggest the approach can scale to larger systems.

    Video: Kodaira et al.

Some limitations remain, including StreamDiT’s limited ability to “remember” earlier parts of a video and occasional visible transitions between sections. The researchers say they are working on solutions.

Other companies are also exploring real-time AI video generation. Odyssey, for example, recently introduced an autoregressive world model that adapts video frame by frame in response to user input, making interactive experiences more accessible.

Senior aides to King and Prince Harry pictured meeting in London | UK News

Senior aides to the King and Prince Harry have been pictured together in London, possibly opening a channel of communication between the two sides for the first time in years.

Meredith Maines, the duke’s chief communications officer, and Liam Maguire, who runs Harry and Meghan’s UK public relations team, were pictured meeting with Tobyn Andreae, the King’s communications secretary, at the Royal Over-Seas League near Clarence House.

Sky News understands it’s the first time they’ve all met like this.

The images were obtained by The Mail On Sunday, with the paper quoting a source saying there was no “formal agenda” to the meeting, but there were “things both sides wanted to talk about”.

Both sides have been contacted for comment.

Relations between the King and his second son declined significantly after the 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which Harry and Meghan alleged a member of the Royal Family was concerned about the colour of their son Archie’s skin before he was born.

In his controversial memoir Spare, the duke then claimed his brother, the Prince of Wales, had physically attacked him and that the King put his own interests above Harry’s, and was jealous of Meghan.

The rift deepened further in 2020 when the Sussexes announced that they would step back as senior members of the Royal Family and split their time between the UK and US. It was at this time that Harry’s taxpayer-funded security was also taken away.

In a Good Morning America interview in 2023, Harry said he was “stunned” by the decision. He also took the Home Office to court over the move.

In May this year, the duke lost that legal challenge, with the Home Office saying security decisions were now taken on a “case-by-case” basis.

Speaking in an interview with BBC News after losing the case, Harry said he wants a “reconciliation” with the Royal Family – but claimed the King “won’t speak to me”.

The duke was criticised for saying “I don’t know how much longer my father has”, appearing to refer to the King’s cancer diagnosis.

Fans praise Colin Jost for response to Scarlett Johansson kissing Jonathan Bailey on press tour

Colin Jost has addressed the attention around Scarlett Johansson kissing Jonathan Bailey during the Jurassic World Rebirth press tour.

Johansson and Bailey, who star in the film, were seen sharing kisses on the red carpet at multiple events.

Jonathan Bailey, who is openly gay, previously said of the kisses, “I believe in being able to show love in all different ways. And if you can’t kiss your friends…life’s too short not to.”

Colin Jost spoke about the situation with Entertainment Tonight, describing the press tour as “fun,” although noting the unexpected stories emerging from it.

“[There’s been a] lot of Jurassic press things that you’re like, you didn’t expect this to be a story. But there’s a lot of stories coming out of it,” Jost said.

When asked directly about “your wife constantly kissing Jonathan Bailey,” Jost responded, “I guess in Jurassic Park terms, the attack always comes from the raptor you never thought. Of all the threats out there, I wasn’t thinking it was Jonathan.”

He added, “People really blow it out of proportion, when someone kisses their friend hello,” and noted, “Jonathan’s an out gay man. It didn’t seem like the biggest threat,” before joking that he and Bailey now need to kiss to “close the loop.”

Fans on TikTok and Reddit described Jost’s response as confident and noted their appreciation for his relaxed approach, with some commenting that “the world needs more Colins.”

Why was GTA V banned for 12 years in UAE and Saudi Arabia? Now rated +21 and approved for release | World News

GTA V and GTA Online will be available with a +21 rating in Saudi Arabia and the UAE starting July 17, 2025, on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, in both physical and digital formats./ Image: Rockstar

    • GTA V and GTA Online are officially rated +21 and launching in Saudi Arabia and UAE on July 17, 2025.
    • The release ends a 12-year delay caused by strict regional content regulations.
    • Casino features are expected to remain disabled to comply with local gambling laws.
    • This approval paves the way for GTA VI’s timely Middle East release in 2026 and signals growing acceptance of gaming culture in the Gulf.

A Landmark Moment for Middle East Gamers

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), the critically acclaimed open-world action game from Rockstar Games, is finally being released in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on July 17, 2025, nearly 12 years after its global debut in 2013. The announcement came via the General Authority of Media Regulation (GAMR) in Saudi Arabia and the official PlayStation Middle East Twitter account. Both confirmed that GTA V and GTA Online have now been officially rated and approved for release in the region. On Thursday, July 3, the official PlayStation Middle East account announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online are now rated +21 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, offering fans the ultimate entertainment experience. This decision signals a significant policy shift in how game content is regulated in the Gulf. The long-awaited green light is being hailed by fans as not just a delayed celebration for GTA V, but a hopeful sign for the timely arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI, slated for May 26, 2026.

Why Was GTA V Delayed in the Middle East?

Although GTA V was never officially banned in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, its release was effectively blocked for over a decade due to the region’s stringent media regulations.

    Primary Reasons for the Delay:

    • Mature Themes: The game’s depiction of violence, drug use, sexual content, and crime clashed with local standards.
    • Content Review Processes: Games must undergo detailed scrutiny by regulatory bodies like:
      • Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Media Regulation (GAMR)
      • UAE Media Council
    • Casino Features: Since 2019, gambling-related content in GTA Online (like the virtual casino) has been explicitly prohibited in both countries.

Despite the demand, local stores could not sell GTA V legally. Many players relied on imported physical copies or created foreign digital accounts to access the game. Even the GTA Trilogy only gained approval more than two years after its global launch, highlighting the slow, case-by-case process of licensing titles with mature content.

    What’s Changing Now?

With approval secured, GTA V and GTA Online will now be officially available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, in both digital and physical formats, with a 21+ age rating, stricter than the 18+ or 17+ (ESRB’s M) ratings in most other countries.

    What’s Included and What’s Not:

    • Full single-player experience
    • Access to GTA Online
    • Casino features in GTA Online are expected to remain disabled, in line with regional laws prohibiting gambling.
    • Other content adjustments, if any, have not been disclosed

This rollout comes after negotiations between Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, and local regulatory bodies. It’s also understood that the deal includes future titles, setting a precedent for upcoming releases to launch without long delays.

What This Means for GTA VI and the Middle East Gaming Market

The approval of GTA V is being interpreted by many as a strategic shift in the way the Gulf region is approaching gaming.

    • Path Cleared for GTA VI: With GTA V now allowed, it’s increasingly likely that GTA VI could launch on or close to its global release date in the Middle East, May 26, 2026.
    • Content Still Under Watch: Regulators may continue to impose localized restrictions (e.g., censoring certain missions or features), but the door is now open.
    • Gaming Sector Growth: This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which promotes investment in esports and entertainment as part of economic diversification.
    • Cultural Shift: The decision reflects a greater acceptance of gaming culture and recognition of the region’s active gaming community.

    Historical Context

Games like GTA IV were previously withheld in the Gulf due to concerns over violence, drugs, and sexual content. Similar restrictions have affected many AAA titles in the region. Despite this, GTA has remained hugely popular, with players often resorting to imports and digital workarounds to access the games.

    • Q. Why was GTA V delayed in Saudi Arabia and the UAE?

Due to mature content like violence, drugs, and gambling, it required lengthy approval from local regulators with strict media rules.

    • Q. When will GTA V be officially available in these countries?

The official launch date is July 17, 2025, for both physical and digital versions on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

    • Q. Will GTA Online’s casino features be accessible?

No, casino and gambling-related content will remain disabled to comply with local laws.

    • Q. Does this mean GTA VI will release on time in the Middle East?

This approval suggests GTA VI could launch near its global release date on May 26, 2026, without long delays.

    • Q. Are there any content changes beyond casino restrictions?

Other content adjustments have not been disclosed, but regulators may impose localized restrictions if necessary.
