UK watchdog bans Trip drinks ad over health, nutrition claims

An advert from UK CBD drinks brand Trip has been banned by the local advertising watchdog over several health and nutrition claims.

Last December, Trip promoted a product that did not contain CBD in an online ad.

The cucumber and mint beverage came from the company’s Mindful Blend range, includes a blend of magnesium, Lion’s Mane and other ingredients.

Among the claims in the advert was that the drink could “help you feel calm”.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld three complaints linked to the advert. The complaints centred on claims the drink reduced stress, promoted feelings of calm and whether a “0g added sugar” nutrition claim breached UK ad rules.

The ASA said the advert “implied the magnesium in the product could reduce serum cortisol levels” and included phrases that indicated the product would help consumers relax.

It also ruled the claims around the anxiety and stress reducing aspects of Lion’s Mane “were claims that a food could prevent, treat or cure disease”, which is prohibited by the watchdog’s CAP code.

“We considered those claims were specific health claims for the purposes of the code, because they implied that the ingredients had beneficial health effects,” the ASA said.

“However, we had not seen any evidence which demonstrated that those claims were authorised on the GB Register and they therefore breached the Code.”

Under the code, health claims can only be used in marketing of food and food supplements if they have been authoritised on the GB register.

Commenting on the ruling, Rachael Matthews, product director at Trip, said: “All statements regarding the relevant product’s calming properties were based on real world studies conducted with human participants.

“We will update our advertising and continue to work closely with regulators to ensure that Trip can continue to educate consumers about the functionality of ingredients in its drinks whilst complying with all applicable regulatory requirements.”

The third complaint upheld by the ASA was around a claim in the advert that the drink contained “0g added sugar”.

According to the ASA, such a claim indicates a product is “with no added sugars”, though the use of the claim, it said, was allowed “only where a product did not contain any added omo- or disaccharides, or any other food used for its sweetening properties”.

Given the product contained erythritol and stevia sweeteners, and naturally occuring sugars from fruit concentrate, the ASA ruled the “0g added sugar” claim “did not comply with the conditions of use associated with the equivalent ‘with no added sugars’ nutrition claim and therefore breached the code”.

  • “Super Smeller” Inspires Early Parkinson’s Skin Swab Test

“Super Smeller” Inspires Early Parkinson’s Skin Swab Test

Can Parkinson’s disease (PD) be detected before symptoms start, from just a skin swab?

A new study from the University of Manchester found that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in skin sebum can help identify PD up to seven years before motor symptoms appear.

The findings, published in npj Parkinson’s Disease, suggest that a low-cost, non-invasive tool for early diagnosis and monitoring may be possible.

Why early Parkinson’s detection needs better tools

PD affects over 10 million people globally, a number that is expected to double in the next generation. Diagnosis is based on motor symptoms such as tremor and rigidity, which do not show up until the disease has already progressed. This delay makes it hard to intervene early or assess potential treatments.

There’s strong interest in finding early, low-cost and non-invasive tests. One early sign of PD is isolated REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (iRBD), which causes people to physically act out dreams during sleep. Around 80–90% of people with iRBD go on to develop a neurodegenerative disease, usually PD.

Previous research from the same team found that PD is linked to a specific smell, strongest in oily areas of the skin. The team discovered sebum – the waxy substance the skin produces – contains chemical compounds (i.e., VOCs) that differ in people with PD. These VOCs can be analysed in the lab.

    Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

VOCs are chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. In the body, they can be released through breath, sweat, urine or skin oils such as sebum.

Until now, no study had tested whether the VOCs in sebum could detect PD before symptoms begin, and whether they could be used as markers of early-stage PD.

“Our goal is to develop a reliable, non-invasive test that helps doctors detect Parkinson’s earlier, track its progression and ultimately improve patient outcomes,” said senior author Dr. Drupad Trivedi, a lecturer in analytical measurement sciences at the University of Manchester.

Skin swabs show promise for Parkinson’s detection

The study involved 83 people: 46 with PD, 28 healthy controls and 9 with iRBD. Within the PD group, 11 were followed for 3 years to track changes over time.

Trivedi and the team collected skin swabs from the upper back, a sebum-rich area, and analyzed them to detect VOCs using a method called thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS).

They found 613 VOC features across the samples. Statistical modelling separated the PD, iRBD and control groups based on their skin chemical profiles.

In total, 55 features showed a pattern where levels in the iRBD group sat between those of the controls and the Parkinson’s group, suggesting they may be progression markers – molecules that change as the disease develops.

When comparing people with Parkinson’s to controls, 85 VOCs stood out, many of which were linked to fatty compounds in the skin. Again, the team observed that the iRBD samples were chemically  between the groups

In the longitudinal group, 38 VOCs changed over time, which suggests that these new markers may emerge as the disease progresses. Age, sex, BMI and medication didn’t explain these differences.

A skin swab could help detect Parkinson’s years earlier

The research was inspired by Joy Milne, a retired nurse with a remarkably strong sense of smell. She noticed a distinct scent on her husband years before he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and this observation led researchers to investigate sebum.

During the study, Milne was able to pick out several iRBD samples as having a distinct smell. Two of those people were later diagnosed with PD.

“This is the first study to demonstrate a molecular diagnostic method for PD at the prodromal or early stage,” said co-author Dr. Perdita Barran, a professor of MS at the University of Manchester. “It brings us one step closer to a future where a simple, non-invasive skin swab could help identify people at risk before symptoms arise, allowing for earlier intervention and improved outcomes.”

The results suggest that earlier diagnosis might be possible – potentially up to seven years sooner than current methods. It could also allow routine screening of high-risk groups, such as people with iRBD, and help track how the disease changes over time in individual patients.

The test is simple and low-cost, since sebum can be collected easily with a gauze swab, doesn’t need cold storage and can be mailed in from home.

In a parallel study published in the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease, trained dogs were also able to detect PD by sniffing skin swabs collected by the team. Their accuracy matched the chemical analysis, further supporting the idea that Parkinson’s measurably alters the smell of sebum.

The researchers stress that more work is needed. The iRBD sample was small, and larger, more diverse studies are needed to confirm these results. Current technology also limits how precisely some molecules can be identified.

Next steps for the team include refining the test, expanding the cohort and developing a diagnostic tool that can be used in clinics.

“We’re also keen to hear from other hyperosmic individuals, potential ‘super smellers’ like Joy, whose remarkable sense of smell could help extend our work to detect other diseases with potential odour signatures,” added Trivedi.

  • Ofqual admits massively exaggerating number of students getting exam assistance | Exams

Ofqual admits massively exaggerating number of students getting exam assistance | Exams

The exam regulator for England has admitted to massively exaggerating how many students are granted extra time and other assistance while taking A-levels and GCSEs, a subject that has sparked controversy in recent years.

Ofqual announced on Thursday that it was withdrawing its official statistics for assistance in exams going back to 2014, saying that “the published figures significantly overstated the number of students receiving access arrangements”.

Ofqual had claimed that 30% of students taking A-level, AS-level and GCSE exams were approved for extra time to answer questions last year. It now thinks the actual rate may be far lower.

An Ofqual official said its analysis “has not revealed any evidence of misuse or systemic failure. This has been a technical issue with reporting rather than how the system has been used.”

Access arrangements are adjustments to exams for students with special needs, disabilities or injuries, with 25% extra time being the most common. In 2012-13, 107,000 students in England were granted extra time. But in 2024 Ofqual said it was nearly 420,000 students, an increase of nearly 300%.

The discredited figures had highlighted private schools as particularly to blame for the increase, where nearly 42% of students received adjustments. But that could be more than halved when Ofqual issues revised figures this year.

Julie Robinson, the chief executive of the Independent Schools Council, said Ofqual should apologise. She added: “Ofqual is supposed to be the trusted source for exam statistics and as a result of these significant errors, independent schools have wrongly seen their results undermined and their integrity questioned.”

Tom Bramley, Ofqual’s executive director of research, said: “We are correcting the record as soon as possible. The access arrangements process has not changed, and students who received support did so appropriately.

“This issue is limited to our access arrangements dataset and our other statistics are not affected.”

Bramley said the problems were with “how the data was recorded and reported”, including errors and double-counting. But the huge differences raise questions about Ofqual’s malfunctions dating back to the Covid pandemic, when its attempt to award grades by algorithm collapsed in chaos.

Ofqual’s initial analysis suggested the true proportion of students receiving extra exam time was “much more closely aligned” with the number of students with special educational needs. The DfE’s figures show that 16.5% of secondary school students had SEN support and education, health and care plans last year.

Ofqual said it would work with the Office for Statistics Regulation and examination boards to improve data quality.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We welcome Ofqual’s commitment to improving data quality and transparency, and we will continue to work closely with them to ensure high standards across the system.”

  • Musk’s xAI slammed by AI researchers over lax safety practices

Musk’s xAI slammed by AI researchers over lax safety practices

Despite ongoing controversies, xAI launched Grok 4

    What’s the story

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, is facing criticism from AI experts at OpenAI and Anthropic.
The experts have accused the company of ignoring basic safety measures while rushing to launch new products.
The criticism comes after a series of controversies involving xAI’s chatbot, Grok, which has been embroiled in controversy for making antisemitic comments and calling itself “MechaHitler.”

    Controversies surrounding Grok

Even after taking Grok offline to address these issues, xAI quickly launched a new version called Grok 4.
Some tests revealed that this updated chatbot gave answers influenced by Musk’s personal views on political topics.
Following the controversial behavior of Grok on July 8, xAI issued a formal apology and said that the system vulnerability has since been patched.

    AI companions spark backlash

Along with Grok 4, xAI also launched new AI “companions,” including a hyper-sexualized anime girl and an aggressive panda.
These controversial releases have further fueled concerns over the company’s safety practices.
Boaz Barak, a researcher at OpenAI, stressed that this isn’t about competition but basic responsibility and criticized xAI for not sharing important details about how Grok is trained or tested.

    ‘Reckless’ move, say experts

Samuel Marks, an AI safety researcher at Anthropic, also criticized xAI for not publishing a safety report. He called the move “reckless,” noting that while OpenAI and Google have their own issues with timely sharing of system cards, they at least do something to assess safety pre-deployment and document findings.
This is in stark contrast to xAI’s approach, which has been widely criticized by industry experts.

Call for lawmakers to establish rules around publishing AI safety

The lack of transparency in xAI’s safety practices has raised alarms among AI researchers.
They argue that the company’s actions deviate from industry norms regarding the safe release of AI models.
This has led to calls for state and federal lawmakers to establish rules around publishing AI safety reports, with California state Sen. Scott Wiener and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul pushing similar bills.

    xAI’s rapid progress is impressive

AI safety and alignment testing not only prevents worst-case scenarios but also mitigates near-term behavioral issues.
This is especially critical as Grok’s misbehavior could make the products it powers today significantly worse.
Despite these concerns, xAI’s rapid progress in developing frontier AI models within just a few years of its inception remains impressive.

  • This flat chip uses twisted light to reveal hidden images

This flat chip uses twisted light to reveal hidden images

Imagine trying to wear a left-handed glove on your right hand: it doesn’t fit because left and right hands are mirror images that can’t be superimposed on each other. This ‘handedness’ is what scientists call chirality, and it plays a fundamental role in biology, chemistry, and materials science. Most DNA molecules and sugars are right-handed, while most amino acids are left-handed. Reversing a molecule’s handedness can render a nutrient useless or a drug inactive and even harmful.

Light can also be left or right ‘handed’. When a light beam is circularly polarized, its electric field corkscrews through space in either a left-handed or right-handed spiral. Because chiral structures interact differently with these two types of twisted light beams, shining a circularly polarized light on a sample – and comparing how much of each twist is absorbed, reflected, or delayed – lets scientists read out the sample’s own handedness. However, this effect is extremely weak, which makes precise control of chirality an essential but challenging task.

Now, scientists from the Bionanophotonic Systems Laboratory in EPFL’s School of Engineering have collaborated with those in Australia to create artificial optical structures called metasurfaces: 2D lattices composed of tiny elements (meta-atoms) that can easily tune their chiral properties. By varying the orientation of meta-atoms within a lattice, scientists can control the resulting metasurface’s interaction with polarized light.

“Our ‘chiral design toolkit’ is elegantly simple, and yet more powerful than previous approaches, which tried to control light through very complex meta-atom geometries. Instead, we leverage the interplay between the shape of the meta-atom and the symmetry of the metasurface lattice,” explains Bionanophotonics Lab head Hatice Altug.

The innovation, which has potential applications in data encryption, biosensing, and quantum technologies, has been published in Nature Communications.

    An invisible, dual layer watermark

The team’s metasurface, made of germanium and calcium difloride, presents a gradient of meta-atoms with orientations that vary continuously along a chip. The shape and angles of these meta-atoms, as well as the lattice symmetry, all work together to tune the response of the metasurface to polarized light.

In a proof-of-concept experiment, the scientists encoded two different images simultaneously on a metasurface optimized for the invisible mid-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum. For the first image of an Australian cockatoo, the image data were encoded in the size of the meta-atoms – which represented pixels – and decoded with unpolarized light. The second image was encoded using the orientation of the meta-atoms so that, when exposed to circularly polarized light, the metasurface revealed a picture of the iconic Swiss Matterhorn.

“This experiment showcased our technique’s ability to produce a dual layer ‘watermark’ invisible to the human eye, paving the way for advanced anticounterfeiting, camouflage and security applications,” says Bionanophotonics Systems Lab researcher Ivan Sinev.

Beyond encryption, the team’s approach has potential applications for quantum technologies, many of which rely on polarized light to perform computations. The ability to map chiral responses across large surfaces could also streamline biosensing.

“We can use chiral metastructures like ours to sense, for example, drug composition or purity from small-volume samples. Nature is chiral, and the ability to distinguish between left- and right-handed molecules is essential, as it could make the difference between a medicine and a toxin,” says Bionanophotonic Systems Lab researcher Felix Richter.
