3D Printed Scaffolds Offer New Treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries

Published on September 4, 2025 by Joseph K

In the United States, approximately 300,000 people are living with spinal cord injuries. These injuries can stem from trauma or previous medical conditions, and each year, there are about 18,000 new cases. Spinal cord injuries mostly affect men, and to date, there are no treatment options that have been able to fully restore lost body functions. The complexity of these injuries lies mainly in the destruction of nerve cells and the inability of nerve fibers to regenerate at the injury site, often resulting in permanent paralysis.

For the first time, researchers at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities have developed an innovative approach. Their method combines 3D printing, stem cell therapy, and lab-grown tissue engineering, opening new possibilities for repairing spinal cord injuries and promoting functional recovery.

3D-Printed Scaffolds to Repair the Spinal Cord

The technique is based on the fabrication of a 3D-printed structure designed to host lab-grown tissues, which researchers call an organoid scaffold. This structure contains tiny microscopic channels into which spinal cord–specific neural progenitor cells are introduced. These cells, derived from human adult stem cells, have the ability to multiply and transform into different types of mature nerve cells. “We use the 3D printed channels of the scaffold to direct the growth of the stem cells, which ensures the new nerve fibers grow in the desired way,” explains Guebum Han, former postdoctoral researcher in mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota and first author of the study. “This method creates a relay system that, when placed in the spinal cord, bypasses the damaged area.

In their experiment, the researchers implanted these scaffolds in rats with severe spinal cord injuries. The cells turned into neurons and developed nerve fibers in both directions, forming new connections with existing neural circuits. Over time, these new cells fully integrated into the spinal cord tissue, enabling the rats to regain certain motor functions. “Regenerative medicine has brought about a new era in spinal cord injury research,” says Ann Parr, professor of neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota. While this research is still in its early stages, it represents a new source of hope for people affected by such injuries. The team now plans to scale up production of these structures and continue their development for future medical applications.

  • Lady Gaga’s ‘Wednesday’ Season 2, Part 2 Debut: Closer Look

Lady Gaga’s ‘Wednesday’ Season 2, Part 2 Debut: Closer Look

[This story contains spoilers from Wednesday season two, Part 2.]

Since it was announced that Lady Gaga would appear in Part 2 of Wednesday season two, fans have speculated over what role she would play in Nevermore’s tales of woe. That question was answered in haunting fashion in episode six, “Woe Thyself,” when Gaga was revealed as the ghost of Rosaline Rotwood, a Raven like Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and a former teacher at the school.

When Wednesday seeks out Rotwood in hopes of regaining her psychic ability, in true Raven fashion, Rotwood exacts a price: Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers) are forced to switch bodies, Freaky Friday style, with the threat of death hanging over their heads if they don’t gain a truer understanding of one another. (Oh, woe.)

To coincide with her Wednesday debut, Gaga also officially dropped her new song, “The Dead Dance,” alongside a Tim Burton-directed music video Wednesday morning.

The writers created a backstory and biography for Rotwood, explains Mark Sutherland, who together with Colleen Atwood designed the season’s costumes. To create her ghostly garments, “we went back to where she came from and took the silhouettes for her look from the period, which is the 1930s, and that gave us the perfect shape,” Sutherland says. “She is a Raven, so there are certain elements: We embroidered feathers on the sleeve that you can just get a little glimpse of as the light catches it.”

He adds, “There’s also a little feather edging, so as she floats through the air we have a bit of movement going on, and we put this huge, very light veil over the top of it so we could give it a ghostly look. It was great because the light caught it from the top, and I thought it was just a great reveal.”

And while Stefani Germanotta is known by millions as one character — her stage name, Lady Gaga — Sutherland says she was all in on shedding that image to support the world of Wednesday. “She’s so into the character, she’s into the show,” he says, “so it was great to be able to work with her because it was all about that character [Rotwood], not about the other character, Lady Gaga.”

An even bigger fashion moment occurs in episode seven, “Woe Me the Money,” when Nevermore hosts the fundraising gala arranged by Principal Dort (Steve Buscemi). The Addams family, along with most of the cast, are decked out in their finest 18th century-inspired ball attire for the event, with Dort and Joanna Lumley’s Grandmama Hester Frump arriving by gondola.

The showstopping gala required a whole season’s worth of preparation, says Atwood. The designers kept the theme in mind and started gathering materials even as they prepared for the earlier episodes, filtering the gala’s vintage Venetian inspiration through a modern lens.

“It evolves as you’re working and as you’re shooting,” she says. “The people making the clothes within our workroom, whenever they had a minute where they were not doing regular stuff, [they could] create a corset or do something really fun. Because getting to make that kind of stuff is pretty rare, and it’s really fun to do.”

In addition to costume construction done by their own team, they partnered with workrooms in Italy and the U.K. to craft items, with Atwood and Sutherland checking in on the progress regularly as they designed the principal actors’ costumes.

Out of the many looks in the episode, certain outfits stood out to each designer. For Sutherland, it was Pugsley’s (Isaac Ordonez) jester costume. “Every single element, every single triangle, is singularly cut and put together with this fine braid,” he notes. “I just loved the way he looked in that costume, because you have all these big dresses and masks and everything, and then you have him.”

Another favorite? “Obviously, Morticia,” he says. “The whole family, as they came down the staircase, I thought they looked amazing. It’s not really just one costume, it’s the whole look overall.” Catherine Zeta-Jones wears a black gown with gold accents and an exaggerated waist, along with a matching black headdress, while Luis Guzmán, as Gomez, wears a ruffled shirt and intricately embroidered period coat that’s reminiscent of the actor’s Count of Monte Cristo days.

Atwood agrees that the combination of the cast’s looks together is what makes the gala so special, noting, “I love the anti-ball vibe of Jenna’s dress. It was like, ‘I don’t want to be at the ball, but I have a dress anyway that’s great.’”

She adds, “I loved doing the big dresses on Gwendoline [Christie, who plays Principal Weems] and Lumley that were just insanely — especially making that dress for Gwendoline Christie, who’s 6 feet tall, in that period, is just fun to do.” Christie’s off-white gown features bell sleeves and a tiered hoop skirt, along with a matching vintage mask. “[She’s 6-foot-3] in the shoes, and she just wears clothes amazingly. It was just great, all the layering of it was really fun, and I thought the set was spectacular with the water entry, and all of that made it even more amazing for us.”

Of the emerald dress Agnes (Evie Templeton) wears to the ball, signaling that she’s coming into her own, Atwood notes, “I love that color on redheads. It’s such a great color for red hair. … She wasn’t copying Wednesday, but you didn’t really want to do a pastel, so you go with the rich color.”

The big swing of the gala is indicative of the production team’s goals for the second season, Atwood says. “It’s always Charles Addams’ world because that’s the origin of the characters, and because we’re working with a visionary like Tim [Burton] and we’re using the style of shooting that Tim does, it’s taking that and pushing it into another level, opening it up a little bit more,” she notes. “Even though we’re at the school a lot, we’re doing big things at the school. It’s not claustrophobic, in two rooms. They go out — there’s the Day of the Dead festival, a huge party. It’s making the internal world a bigger world.”

Another guiding principle was taking the Addams family and bringing them into the modern day, Sutherland notes: “These are people we can relate to as characters and also, especially with Wednesday and Enid, that people can take elements from their costumes and make it their own and relate to it. I think that’s really important.”

Wednesday season two, Part 2, released Sept. 3 and is now streaming on Netflix.

  • Pakistan govt decides to sell USC assets in FY26

Pakistan govt decides to sell USC assets in FY26

ISLAMABAD: The Government has decided that sale/ disposal of assets of Utility Stores Corporation (USC), including the properties, shall be executed within the current financial year and the utilisation of Rs 15 billion available with Ministry of Industries and Production (MoI&P) as CFY budget for clearance of sugar subsidy arrears of TCP, sources close to SAPM on MoI&P told Business Recorder.

Sharing the details, sources said that on August 28, 2025, Ministry of Industries and Production briefed the forum that USC was established on 3rd September, 1971 as a government company to provide essential food items at subsidised rates and act as a price moderator. In 2007, its network was expanded to the level of Union Council, increasing the number of outlets from 1,023 to 5,557 and that of staff members from 3,892 to 12,749 by 2009. This necessitated the increase in substantial subsidies to sustain the operations of the USC. Despite support, the USC had been incurring continuous losses since 2013, with accumulated losses reaching Rs. 23.8 billion by June 2025.

On August 13, 2024, the Federal Cabinet placed USC in Phase-II of the active privatisation list. Later, on 16th August, 2024, the Federal Government was pleased to discontinue subsidies for the USC. To cut losses, USC Board approved a rightsizing plan in December 2024 which led to the reduction in the number of stores from 3,742 to 1,904 and employees from 11,614 to 7,710 by February, 2025. Despite these efforts for rightsizing, the projected annual losses remained around Rs. 8.315 billion annually. Accordingly, a case was presented to the Prime Minister on 28th June, 2025 with two options viz ;(i) closure of operations by 31st July 2025; or (ii) continuation of operations till its privatisation along with Rs. 14 billion grant to clear the vendor liabilities and stabilise cash flow.

‘Smooth’ USC closure: Rs30.216bn TSG approved by ECC

The Prime Minister approved the closure of the USC operations by 31st July 2025 and constituted a committee under the Finance Minister to oversee the closure, early privatisation, and modalities for payment of Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) to regular employees.

The USC’s Board of Directors approved the closure of its operations on July 31, 2025. The USC closed down 1,059 rented out stores and 1,230 franchise outlets between 3rd and 14th July, 2025. However, Collective Bargaining Agents (CBA) and staff unions staged a sit-in at the USC Headquarters, Islamabad, thereby halting the process. To address their concerns, the Prime Minister constituted a committee led by the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah to hold meetings with the collective bargaining agents and staff unions. The sit-in was called off as a result of the meetings held on the 25th and 31st July, 2025, respectively.

The Ministry of Industries and Production further apprised the ECC that the committee chaired by Finance Minister held four meetings on 16th July and 15th, 20th and 22nd August 2025 to review the process of closure. The committee also finalised the following package to lay-off USC employees with a cost ranging between Rs. 16 and Rs. 19.5 billion: (i) a severance package of Rs. 13.225 billion for regular employees; (ii) a compensation package of Rs. 2.192 to Rs. 6.337 billion for contractual and daily wagers employees, to be finalized after negotiation with CBA; however, this will not be used as a precedent; and (iii) terminal dues of Rs. 5.067 billion for employees and a compensation package of Rs. 684 million for widows of employees in line with the employment terms of the USC.

The ECC was apprised by the Ministry of Industries and Production that the USC stopped its operations nationwide on 31st July 2025 and started shifting stocks from stores to the warehouses for further disposal. It intended to lay-off majority of its staff by 31st August 2025. The Ministry of Industries and Production further informed the ECC that the USC employees have not been paid their salaries for the month of July and August 2025, as well as, salaries for half the month of April 2025. Hence, a total sum of Rs. 1.467 billion is required to pay the salaries of 7,710 employees.

The committee constituted under Finance Minister also instructed the USC to obtain fresh valuations for its 21 properties to partially meet the cost of laying-off staff and meeting other liabilities. In response, preliminary assessments conducted by State Bank of Pakistan approved surveyors stated that the total value of these assets is between Rs. 10.5 billion to Rs. 12.6 billion. Out of these properties, the title of properties belonging to the Roti Corporation of Pakistan acquired by the USC from the Privatization Commission has not been transferred to USC yet. To proceed with the sale, these properties first need to be transferred to USC which may involve additional costs. A formal request has already been made to the Privatization Commission for the release of the original documents. Furthermore, certain USC properties are subject to leasehold rights, require building completion certificates, and are liable for commercialization charges. Completion of record and obtaining aforesaid permissions will require extra expenditure.

The Ministry of Industries and Production further informed the ECC that from September to November, 2025 around 832 staff (for maintaining 88 warehouses and 44 regional offices) will be required to complete audit, stocktaking, reconciliation and auction. Personnel to deal with pending and emerging litigation will also be needed. This will entail an approximate expenditure of Rs. 210 million per month. Moreover, from December 2025 to June 2026, a further reduced workforce of 326 employees will be retained to assist in disposal of the USC properties and to perform any residual tasks at a monthly expense of around Rs. 115 million.

The ECC was further apprised that the committee instructed the Ministry of Finance and the USC to prepare a detailed cash flow plan mapping out monthly inflows and outflows. The cash flow plan was presented to the committee on 22nd August, 2025. The committee further urged for early disposal of USC properties to generate funds to payoff the liabilities and tasked the Secretary Law & Justice Division to explore legal avenues for expeditious disposal of properties within the framework of the Privatization Commission Ordinance, 2000.

The Ministry of Industries and Productions also shared with the ECC that the financial condition of the Utility Stores Corporation (Private) Limited remained critical, with no funds available to pay the salaries or incur the expenditures for severance and compensation packages, and other dues of its employees. Moreover, USC intends to lay-off its employees with effect from 31st August 2025 minus the essential staff as explained in the summary. Therefore, it is essential that the severance and compensatory packages may be approved at the earliest. Accordingly, ECC has been requested to approve Rs. 30.216 billion as a supplementary grant to Ministry of Industries & Production for USC, as per following details and cash flow plan: (i) Rs. 13.225 billion for severance package to regular employees; (ii) Rs. 5.751 billion for terminal dues of regular and contract employees and compensation for widows of employees who have died in service, as per terms of employment; (iii) Rs. 2.192 to Rs. 6.337 billion, exact amount to be finalized after negotiation with CBA as one-time compensatory payment to contractual and daily wage staff; (iv) Rs. 1.467 billion for payment of salary for April (15 days) and operational expenses for July and August 2025; Rs.630 million for retention of 832 staff from September to November 2025 and Rs.805 million for retention of 326 staff from December 2025 to June 2026; and (v) Rs. 2 billion for payment of liabilities of vendors while remaining Rs. 9,935 million to be budgeted in FY 2026-27.

  • Baked Fish May Lower Colon Cancer Risk by 26%

Baked Fish May Lower Colon Cancer Risk by 26%

    • Black Americans have the highest rates of colon cancer and related death.
    • This study suggests that higher intake of baked fish is associated with lower rates of colon cancer.
    • There are many delicious ways to eat fish and other seafood high in omega-3s.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were nearly 148,000 new cases of colorectal cancers reported in the U.S. in 2022. More than 50,000 people in the U.S. died from colorectal cancer in 2023. Black Americans have the highest rates of colorectal cancer in the U.S., and they are more likely to die from it than other ethnicities and racial groups in America.

We know that diet plays a role in cancer risk. For example, there is evidence that people who follow plant-based diets have lower cancer risk than those who eat meat. Eating certain foods, such as broccoli, walnuts, and legumes, has been linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer. And we know that eating more fiber can also help lower your risk of colorectal cancer.

Researchers from Boston University were curious about fish, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and CRC. Could eating more fish and PUFA-rich foods lower your risk? They published their findings in The Journal of Nutrition. Let’s break down what they found.

    How Was This Study Conducted?

For this study, researchers were especially interested in Black American women and their risk of colorectal cancer, since Black Americans have the highest rate of colorectal cancer in the U.S. They drew their data from the Black Women’s Health Study (BWHS), a long-term study that ran from 1995 to 2021. From the BWHS, 52,690 women, ages 21 to 69, met the criteria researchers were looking for. Out of this population, 687 women developed colorectal cancer over the average follow-up time of 24 years.

Researchers also had typical demographics that would be adjusted for during the statistical analyses. These included age, total energy intake (kcal/day), type 2 diabetes, BMI, smoking status, alcohol intake, red and processed meats (servings/day), fruits and vegetables (servings/day), education level, family history of colorectal cancer, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) use, walking as exercise, vigorous physical activity, menopausal status and menopausal hormone use.

In addition, participants had completed two food frequency questionnaires: one in 1995, which included 68 food items, and a second one in 2001 that included 85 food items. From these questionnaires, researchers compiled information about participants’ intake of foods suspected to reduce colorectal cancer risk, and those believed to increase it, like processed meats.

Based on participants’ responses, researchers divided them into four quartiles based on grams of fish eaten per 1,000 calories, with quartile one being the lowest intake of fish and quartile four the highest. And because colorectal cancer can be located in different parts of the colon and rectum, researchers also considered the type of colorectal cancer and its location in the gut.

    What Did This Study Find?

After running several statistical analyses, including adjusting for demographics and health and family history, researchers found that a high intake of baked fish—those who fell into quartile 4—was associated with a 26% decrease in colorectal cancer risk. The key here is that the fish was baked; interestingly, they did not find an association with total fish intake and a reduced colorectal cancer risk, probably because total fish intake includes all types of fish, including those low in PUFAs, and all types of cooking methods, including frying.

When looking at site-specific colorectal cancer, high baked fish intake was associated with a 44% decrease in proximal colon cancer. The proximal colon is the first part of the large intestine. It sits in the right upper abdomen.

Researchers also found that higher intake of omega-3s in general, and having a healthy omega-3-to-omega-6 ratio, were associated with a 39% to 53% lower proximal colon cancer risk.

There are several limitations to this study. First, anytime food frequency questionnaires are used, there is always a chance of recall bias; in other words, participants are essentially estimating how much of each food they eat and how often. Also, while researchers feel these results are generalizable to most Black American women, they can’t say if they apply to other populations. Lastly, there’s always a chance of error in statistical analysis and factors not taken into consideration skewing the results.

How Does This Apply to Real Life?

The American Institute for Cancer Research provides several diet-related recommendations for preventing cancer in general. They include:

    • Eating a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes
    • Limiting consumption of “fast foods” and other processed foods that are high in fat, starches or sugars
    • Limiting consumption of red and processed meats
    • Limiting consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks
    • Limiting or avoiding alcohol

The AICR also recommends being physically active and trying to maintain a healthy weight.

Omega-3s are a type of PUFA that most of us don’t get enough of. Including fish and seafood a couple of times a week is a good way to get this essential fatty acid. And it doesn’t have to be difficult or fussy. Crack open a can of tuna or salmon and toss it onto your salad, or make a tuna salad sandwich with it. We’ve even got a recipe for the best tuna salad if you’ve grown tired of your version. And if you’re looking to switch your tuna salad sandwich to salmon, we’ve got a recipe for that, too.

One thing we know about cancer and other diseases is that there is a connection to chronic inflammation. So eating more foods believed to be anti-inflammatory—like plants and baked fish—and avoiding or limiting those that are known to increase inflammation—like sugar, processed meats and alcohol—may help. If you’re ready to dive in, try our 30-Day No-Sugar Anti-Inflammatory Meal Plan.

It’s also important to pay attention to which cooking method is most frequently used with your seafood. While having it fried now and then is fine, eating it baked or broiled appears to have more health benefits. According to these study authors, this is partly due to how baking better retains seafood’s omega-3s compared to frying or grilling. Researchers also note that frying fish in cooking oil can oxidize or degrade omega-3s in the seafood, and it can even add high amounts of fat and omega-6s, which most of us already get enough of.

    Our Expert Take

Colorectal cancer rates are highest among Black Americans. This study suggests that Black American women with the highest intake of baked fish may have the lower rates of colon cancer. It’s important to know the symptoms of colon cancer, including abdominal pain, fatigue and bloody stool, and get the recommended screenings for colorectal cancer. The current recommendation is that anyone with an average risk for colorectal cancer and no symptoms get a baseline screening at age 45. This may include an at-home test that involves sending in a stool sample for examination or a colonoscopy.

Preventing cancer includes eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, lean proteins, fish and seafood, and limiting or avoiding sugar, processed meats, highly processed foods and alcohol. Move your body more often and try to get to and maintain a healthy weight. Managing your stressors, getting plenty of quality sleep and spending time with loved ones round out a whole-health approach to disease prevention and quality of life.
