IARC adds data from 12 countries in Asia to the CanScreen5 data repository, which now has screening data from more than 100 countries – IARC

25 Septembre 2025

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has added validated data from 12 countries in Asia to the Cancer Screening in Five Continents (CanScreen5) data repository. CanScreen5 is an IARC flagship project dedicated to improving the quality and impact of cancer screening programmes through capacity-building. It supports programme managers and health professionals in evaluating, benchmarking, and strengthening cancer screening efforts.

The new data are from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. The addition of these data follows a face-to-face CanScreen5 training workshop held in Bali, Indonesia, for 24 dedicated cancer screening managers and health professionals from these countries in 2024. At the workshop, the national screening data underwent thorough review and validation by an external panel of experts.

This milestone was made possible through the close collaboration of the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, the Dharmais Cancer Hospital – National Cancer Center in Jakarta, Indonesia, the World Health Organization (WHO) in South-East Asia, and the broader CanScreen5 network. IARC and the CanScreen5 collaborators are deeply grateful for their support in advancing this important initiative.

To date, the CanScreen5 initiative has collected, reviewed, validated, and published cancer screening data from more than 100 countries, covering breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer screening programmes. This information is freely accessible on the CanScreen5 website, including detailed fact sheets on policies, protocols, organizational structures, and key performance indicators.

The CanScreen5 project team is currently initiating updates to all data collected from the Americas, English-speaking countries in Africa, and the European region to ensure that the CanScreen5 platform reflects the most current and accurate information. In addition, countries worldwide are invited to contribute the latest information relating to their cancer screening practices, including lung cancer screening.

Further efforts are under way to collect data from 12 additional countries in the Asia–Pacific region. A face-to-face training workshop is being planned in collaboration with the National Cancer Center Japan, to take place in October 2025.

These achievements highlight IARC’s ongoing commitment to advancing equitable, evidence-based cancer screening programmes and building capacity to improve the quality and coverage of cancer screening services worldwide.
