Washington, D.C., September 28, 2025 (PAHO) — Health officials from across the region, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) staff and their families, and members of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area (DMV) gathered today for the 21st edition of the PAHO Walk for Health—an annual tradition in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood that promotes physical activity, social connection, and collective well-being.
“We walk to defend the right to health, understood not only as the absence of disease, but as the possibility of living in a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being,” said PAHO Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, as he opened the event.
Dr. Barbosa noted that regular physical activity not only strengthens bodily functions such as circulation and the immune system, but also improves mood and self-esteem. It also helps prevent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), the leading cause of death in the region.
“We walk for those facing barriers, and for a future where our societies are healthier, fairer, and more equitable,” he concluded.
The morning began at PAHO headquarters and featured games, educational messages, and a 3.5 km walk. People of all ages took part, enjoying the event with colleagues, friends, and even pets.
The Walk for Health takes place just ahead of the 62nd PAHO Directing Council, to be held from September 29 to October 3. During this meeting, Member States will discuss and adopt strategies on topics such as noncommunicable diseases and access to high-cost health technologies, among others.
