Chinese scientists have developed a revolutionary genome editing technology that allows large sections of DNA – from several thousand to millions of base pairs – to be manipulated in both plants and animals. This is reported by
Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
The development belongs to a group of researchers from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The new system, called PCE, is a programmable technology for manipulation at the chromosome level.
In laboratory experiments on plant and animal cells, scientists achieved the precise insertion of an 18,800 base pair DNA fragment, the targeted replacement of a 5,000 base pair segment, inversion of a chromosome segment of 12 million base pairs, deletion of 4 million base pairs, and even the movement of an entire chromosome.
According to reviewers, these results mark a significant step forward in the field of genetic engineering, opening up new horizons in crop breeding, the treatment of genetic diseases, and fundamental research.
