Rio Tinto has suspended all activities at its Simandou iron-ore project in Guinea following the death of a worker there, the mining giant said.
An employee of a contracting company died at the SimFer mine site in Guinea's Nzerekore region on Friday, Rio Tinto said in a statement on Saturday. The company didn't provide further details on the incident or the possible impact on the project.
Simandou is one of the world's largest and richest undeveloped deposits of iron ore, and has the potential to reshape the global market as it ramps up.
Rio Tinto is developing part of the deposit jointly with a Chinese consortium led by Aluminum Corp. of China, and expects to spend roughly $6.2 billion on the project. It said last month that the project was progressing ahead of schedule and that it expects the first shipment in November.
